Cleveland County defeated cup holders Bailey’s Bay by 61 runs in a dramatic and incident-filled second round clash at Lord’s. The victory means Cleveland will now defend the trophy in the final round against St. David’s Cricket Club.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Bailey’s Bay bowlers were effective in restricting the challengers. Cleveland County were bowled out for 140, with opener Treadwell Gibbons top-scoring with 31. The pick of the Bailey’s Bay bowlers was Derrick Brangman, who finished with superb figures of four wickets for just 33 runs.

In reply, the chase by Bailey’s Bay got off to a difficult start. They struggled to build momentum and were eventually bowled out for a meagre 79, falling well short of their target. Tre Manders, who had taken a stunning catch in the field, was the top scorer with 36. Shakai Darrell was the star for Cleveland County, claiming four wickets for 23 runs to lead his team to victory.

The match was not without controversy. There was a significant hold-up after a catch given out against Delray Rawlins was disputed by the batsman. From the umpire’s view, a clean catch was taken, and after a lengthy delay, order was restored, allowing Cleveland to seal their well-deserved victory.

M.O.M.s Bermuda, an anti-violence advocacy group held a motorcade on Saturday to raise awareness of the scourge of violence in recent years and to reflect on the lives of those lost to gun violence.

A decorations event was held prior to the motorcade at 9am at the Cedarbridge Academy.

Co-found of M.O.M.s Bermuda, Nicole Fox, who lost her son and step-son to gun murders was “encouraged and optimistic” about today’s turnout.

Shadow National Security Minister Robert King, his wife, Miriam and Governor Andrew Murdoch attended in a show of support for those gathered today.

Ms. Fox said, “Within the last three days, we’ve had to add two new names to the list.”

“And its so unfortunate that every year we’re adding a name and I think it’s time that we all come together and unite.”

On Tuesday, two men were fatally shot on Court Street in a drive-by shooting. 18-year-old Nahkai Robinson and 23-year-old Natrae Eversly lost their lives in the incident which is now under investigation by the Bermuda Police Service to locate the suspects.

Ms. Fox added, “We need to do something. Our community is struggling -they’re frightened…it feels like people are just existing; they’re not really living.”

Asked what needs to be done to combat the level of violence, Ms. Fox called for better relations between the police and the community.

“The more times we do this, its bringing more awareness to the community”, Ms. Fox said.

She thanked Governor Murdoch for taking the time to hear their stories.

Governor Murdoch speaking with Ms. Fox and the attendees said, “What you’re doing… the advocacy is really, really important because we have to break the cycle and its important that your voices are heard.”

“I think inaction is not acceptable and if you have got ideas on how things could be done- its your community.

“Some of its for police, some of its for government, some of its for you and your neighbours. Its all a collective effort, so, I think keep the conversation going but I think what you’re doing today in making a statement is really good…its fantastic.”

The motorcade travelled from Cedarbridge Academy to the east and west ends.

The Emergency Measures Organisation will meet on Monday to review the latest developments and to assess Government readiness should any impacts to Bermuda be expected.

The Ministry said further updates will be issued thereafter.

Meanwhile, BELCO said its Crisis Management Team is reviewing and commencing storm preparations and urges residents to make necessary storm preparations this weekend including tree trimming.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an “above normal” Atlantic hurricane season for 2025.

The Government of Bermuda hosted international digital finance leaders in Bermuda for meetings on Wednesday, August 6th, including a Digital Finance Roundtable led by the Ministry of Finance and the inaugural meeting of the Bermuda Stablecoin Association (BSA) hosted by Apex Group and Penrose Partners. Both engagements reinforced Bermuda’s position as a leader in regulated digital assets and stablecoin innovation, through continued collaboration between the Government, BMA, and industry stakeholders to align on the future of digital finance in Bermuda.

The Ministry of Finance hosted a Digital Finance Roundtable at the Cabinet Office, with stakeholders from the Bermuda Monetary Authority, several global digital asset leaders, and representatives from the local banking industry.

The Ministry outlined Bermuda’s long-standing commitment to digital finance, dating back to the introduction of the Digital Asset Business Act (DABA) in 2018, and shared its vision to drive national digital finance adoption in a way that benefits residents, businesses, and government operations. Participants were invited to provide input on strategic priorities, including Bermuda’s positioning in institutional digital investment markets as well as local challenges around payments and banking.

Later that day, the Bermuda Stablecoin Association meeting, facilitated by Apex Group and Penrose Partners, brought together founding participants, including leading global digital asset firms operating in Bermuda. The session marked the formal launch of the association, with participants agreeing on its role as a collaborative, industry-led forum to support the adoption and institutional standard setting of stablecoins. Early working group tracks were proposed to focus on compliance, technical standards, policy engagement, and public education.

Premier the Hon. E. David Burt, JP, MP introducing Bermuda Stablecoin Association Founder and Apex Group CEO, Peter Hughes

Premier, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP and Minister of Finance, stated, “As we continue building on the success of the Digital Finance Forum held earlier this year, the Digital Finance Roundtable discussions further strengthen Bermuda’s position at the forefront of digital finance and innovation. This collaboration is key to ensuring that Bermudian vendors and businesses gain access to the digital economy, empowering them to operate seamlessly within global digital markets. Our ongoing efforts are preparing Bermuda to thrive in the 21st century by embracing the opportunities that digital finance offers, enhancing our global competitiveness and ensuring prosperity for future generations.”

Peter Hughes, Founder and CEO of Apex Group, added, “Bermuda is a global leader in digital finance because of our unique collaborative spirit. These meetings with the Government, the BMA, and industry leaders are critical to shaping an ecosystem that promotes responsible innovation.” He continued, “The launch of the Bermuda Stablecoin Association is a testament to this shared vision, creating a forum where we can work together to set the standards for the future of regulated stablecoins and ensure Bermuda continues to thrive as a hub for institutional-grade digital finance.”

Kerem Kolcuoglu, Founder and Managing Partner of Penrose Partners, noted, “We are grateful to have the opportunity to support both public and private sector initiatives in their efforts to collaborate and make Bermuda a global hub for digital finance. This collaboration historically has resulted in great success for Bermuda’s international business market and local economy. We hope that digital finance can enable Bermuda to compete for international business at the global stage for the decades to come.”

Both meetings affirmed Bermuda’s commitment to responsible innovation and collaborative governance. The Ministry will continue to work closely with the private sector and regulators to advance its digital finance agenda and position Bermuda as a globally recognized hub for regulated digital assets.

Dockworkers vote to lift overtime ban

Source tells BBC that union members flipped the ban by one vote in a secret ballot

Unionised dockworkers have voted to lift the overtime ban that was implemented in June.

A source told Bermuda Broadcasting that the vote was held in a secret ballot, with only one vote making the difference.

The original vote in June, unlike the original vote was a hand count, with 24 out of 33 unionised workers present. At that time, 21 voted in favour of the ban – about 64% of unionised dockworkers.

A number of anonymous dockworkers previously reached out to Bermuda Broadcasting, and claimed that the original voting process was flawed and intimidating.

The overtime ban was implemented in an effort to have Chris Furbert Jr, son of BIU President Chris Furbert, reinstated at Hamilton Docks.

Mr Furbert Jr was fired in February 2020 following a verbal exchange with former Stevedoring boss Warren Jones.

In November last year, an Employment Tribunal ruled that the dismissal was unfair, because SSL had not followed its own grievance procedures. However, the Tribunal did not order his reinstatement and reduced the potential dollar compensation, citing that the former employee had contributed to his dismissal.

Both the union and SSL are appealing the Tribunal’s decision. The union wants Mr Furbert Jr reinstated, while SSL wants the compensation reduced.

The Port Workers Division of the BIU implemented an overtime ban in June, citing that Article 30 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement requires the employee’s reinstatement if their dismissal is found to be “unjustified”.

At a Bermuda Industrial Union press conference this week, President Chris Furbert and Port Workers Division President Dawud Tucker asked for the public’s support in their efforts to have the worker reinstated.

However, the Port Workers today voted for the ban to be lifted.

It should also be noted that the CBA article in question, Article 30 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, applies to the “unjustified dismissal or suspension of an Employee who is subsequently reinstated…”

After this week’s press conference, we reached out to the BIU question whether this section of the CBA is inapplicable, given the Tribunal ruled against the reinstatement.

We await a response from the BIU.

Governor vows crackdown after Court Street murders

Calls attack ‘brazen and calculated’ and pledges joint action with Government and police to tackle gun violence

Press release from Government House:

The Governor extends his condolences to the families of Nakai Robinson (18) and Natrae Eversley (23). The killing of these young men on Court Street is not just a personal tragedy for those families, but a moment for Government House, the Government of Bermuda, the Bermuda Police Service and the entire community to consider what led to this incident and what more can be done individually, and collectively, to stop the cycle of gun crime.

I visited Court Street in the aftermath of the shooting to meet the members of the Bermuda Police Service who responded to the incident. I also spoke to the officers responsible for investigating this horrific crime. All those officers acted with complete professionalism in difficult circumstances, and I thank them, as well as the other first responders, for their actions.

I was struck, as others have been, by the brazen, callous and calculated nature of the attack in the heart of our capital. We were fortunate, given the location and manner of the shooting, that even more people were not injured or killed. Such attacks in public are inevitably indiscriminate and I strongly reject the view, held by some, that they only impact certain parts of the community. Gun violence, and those bent on using it, affects us all. It disturbs the peace of the whole Island, the spirit of those that live here, and community cohesion. These incidents are shocking, and we should be shocked. We cannot let ourselves be numb to this unacceptable use of violence. The number of individuals who feel empowered to use firearms is small. But the ripples that this minority of individuals creates on the lived experience of many Bermudians is significant.

Government House, in partnership with the Government of Bermuda, is committed to working with the Commissioner of Police and his team to identify and implement measures to help bring those responsible for this horrific crime to justice. We are meeting regularly and those discussions are not about continuing business as usual. They are about challenging ourselves to identify what further measures can be taken to break the cycle of violence.

I have also spoken to the Premier and the Minister of National Security who have emphasised that the Government of Bermuda is fully committed to providing the police with the resources it needs. The Premier and I have agreed to convene a Governor’s Council on the issue of gun violence.

There already exists a very well-considered 2024 National Violence Reduction Strategy to address serious violence in Bermuda. The Strategy provides a road map for change. Some measures will, as in any jurisdiction, take time to implement. But there are also shorter-term measures that can be explored and implemented.

Government House, the Government of Bermuda and the Bermuda Police Service are committed to pursuing, within our respective responsibilities, the following measures:
1. Increasing the pace of recruitment of new BPS officers to increase the overall numbers of officers to police our community;
2. Identifying and acquiring new technology or techniques to assist the BPS in the investigation of firearms incidents;
3. Identifying any resources, equipment, or training that could be deployed from the UK or elsewhere to support the BPS in tackling firearms incidents.

These measures are not an exhaustive list of measures being considered, but an indication of the shared will to tackle gun violence head on.

I would urge everyone who has information about the recent murders, or any other firearms incident, to share that with the police on 717-2345 or 295-0011, or Crime Stoppers Bermuda on 800-8477.

It is important that we all do what we can to make our community safer.
