Government releases January retail sales figures

The Index shows a 0.2 per cent dip in the overall volume of retail sales

Retail activity slowed slightly to start the year. The Ministry of Economy and Labour has released the January 2025 Retail Sales Index, showing a 0.2 per cent dip in the overall volume of retail sales compared to January 2024.

Five of seven retail sectors saw year-over-year volume index declines, with motor vehicles down 12.7 per cent, building materials falling 14.5 per cent, and apparel stores down 6.5 per cent.

On the upside, food store sales grew 12.7 per cent and liquor sales rose 4.7 per cent.

Despite the volume dip, retail sales in value terms reached an estimated $101.8 million.

Selected overseas declarations were also up 5.4 per cent compared to last year.
