Somerset Retain Cup Match Trophy After Rain-Hit Draw

Somerset have retained the Cup Match trophy after the 2025 Annual Classic ended in a rain-affected draw.

With 3 hours of play lost due to heavy showers early in the day, the result would come as no real surprise. Shortly after 1pm St George’s returned to the wicket on 176 for five in pursuit of Somerset’s 291.

Starting the day unbeaten on 76, Delray Rawlins looked poised to reach his maiden Cup Match century but was heartbreakingly bowled for 98 off a ball from Malachi Jones.

The challengers would go on to declare 48 runs adrift, at 243 for 9, following dismissals of Luke Horan (20), and captain Sinclair Smith.

With the champions at bat for the second time, St George’s struck early as Kamau Leverock fell for 12, followed by Tre Manders (13) and Dominic Sabir (2), reducing Somerset to 47 for three. However, captain Terryn Fray would steady the innings with a composed 57—his second half-century of the match— effectively extinguishing the challengers’ hopes of a change in fortunes, before falling lbw to Rawlins.

The draw was sealed when the match was declared at 7.25pm with Somerset leading 209 for the loss of 7 in the second innings and 500 runs overall to St George’s 243.
