200 new body cams are operational and worn by officers of the Bermuda Police Service to de-escalate matters in the field, according to the Commissioner of Police.

During a news conference this afternoon, Commissioner Darrin Simons told media, the recording devices have new feature such as a 16 hour battery life, 100% percent water-proof casing and can “live” stream incidents directly to Comm Op’s policing units during incidents.

Commissioner Simons reiterated that the main purpose of body cams is to enhance transparency and moderate the behaviour of people involved and the recording officers.

The new body cams went live last month.

Commissioner Simons explained how the body cams are expected to be on and recording for a majority of routine offense stops with a policy in place to prevent officers from failing to record incidents.
