‘Gusts could top 100 knots’

Weather service says conditions are worsening at this hour; close to 500 without power

Roughly 448 customers are without power at this hour, as winds from Hurricane Imelda intensify. Belco repair crews have been out this evening but the worsening conditions hamper restoration efforts.

Meanwhile, in its latest update, the Bermuda Weather service says Winds have increased as Hurricane Imelda, a category 2 storm, makes its final approach to the Island. We can expect conditions to further deteriorate tonight as hurricane force winds and gusts  arrive along with rain, heavier showers, and a risk of thunderstorms.

Elevated and exposed areas can expect the strongest winds which are  expected to reach as much as 90 knots with gusts to 110 knots near  the closest point of approach. If the eye of the hurricane passes  over parts of the Island, we will also experience a brief lull in  the winds.

Imelda is a dangerous category 2 hurricane and we can  expect hurricane conditions to continue until near dawn tomorrow.

We will have further updates here.
