Darrell to taxi drivers – ‘Show me there’s not a need for rideshare’

New rideshare laws give taxi operators first dibs on digital fares – but if they don’t respond fast enough, new seasonal operators will get them

‘We can’t stagnate’, says Owen Darrell – therefore, a new rideshare law is coming that will enable 150 new ‘seasonal taxis’ to shore up the industry.

The Tourism and Transport Minister tabled rideshare legislation today, saying its not about replacing taxis, but reducing wait times and strengthening our competitiveness as a tourism destination.

The amendments give taxi operators first dibs on fares – but if they don’t respond fast enough, new seasonal operators will get them.

In an interview with Gary Foster Skelton today, Minister Darrell acknowledged that the Bermuda Taxi Owners & Operators Association do not agree with this move.

However, if the 150 new PSVs successfully claim fares before licensed taxi drivers, despite taxi drivers getting the call first, he suggests that will be proof that more transport options were needed.
