The curtain fell on a dramatic football season with contrasting fortunes for two of Bermuda’s leading stars. While Nathan Trott celebrated a return to the Championship with Cardiff City, Nahki Wells and Luton Town were left to process a cruel exit from the promotion race.
At Field Mill, a nine-goal thriller saw Mansfield Town beat Cardiff 5-4. Trott watched from the sidelines as the Bluebirds—already guaranteed second place behind champions Lincoln City—trailed 3-0 at the interval. Despite a spirited second-half fightback featuring goals from Isaak Davies, Omari Kellyman, and Ronan Kpakio, Ollie Irow’s 80th-minute strike proved decisive for the Stags.
However, the real drama unfolded 200 miles away. Luton recorded a superb away win, hauling themselves back from a half-time deficit in a “must-win” fixture. But as the Hatters celebrated a last-gasp winner, news filtered through that a stoppage-time goal by Stevenage against Wigan had officially ended Luton’s play-off hopes.
The realisation was heartbreaking to witness. Despite an incredible run of nine wins in 12 games, Stevenage’s late intervention condemned Luton to another season of League One football. For Wells and his teammates, the victory felt entirely hollow, falling just short of the top six by the narrowest of margins.
