Ups and downs for young golfers in Caribbean event

Bermuda’s Darina Betschart has surrendered her lead at the 2026 Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships after a challenging second round in the Dominican Republic.

The overnight leader carded an eight-over par 80 at Playa Dorada Golf Club to slip to second place in the Girls 15 and Under Division at 12-over total. Despite two birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys allowed the Bahamas’ Haley Hall to seize the summit at six-over par.

The round of the day from a Bermudian perspective belonged to Lewis MacFarlane in the Boys 11 to 13 Division. MacFarlane fired a resilient five-over par 77, anchored by 11 steady pars, to climb into fourth place overall at 16-over. He sits within striking distance of the podium, though home favorite Alejandro Balbuena leads at one-under.

Elsewhere, 10-year-old Bradford Laing battled hard for an 87 to occupy 15th spot in the same division.

There was further forward momentum for Bermuda in the older age groups. Grayson Tavares carded a gritty six-over par 78, including 10 pars, to break into the top ten of the Boys 15 and Under field.

Meanwhile, Sa-Qui Robinson showed plenty of attacking intent in the prestigious Boys 18 and Under flagship division, racking up four birdies in a round of 79 to climb one place into 13th overall at 19-over p
