Now in its 4th year, the Jab J’Ouvert event at Southlands Park has never resulted in damage, a Government spokesperson said. The event also takes place far from any Woodland Reserve.
In response to resident concerns about protected woodland, Bermuda Broadcasting reached out for more detail about the Jab J’ouvert event which took place in Southlands Park early on Sunday from 3am until 8am.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works & Environment assured that the event takes place far from any woodland reserve, and all necessary approvals were in place.
Now in its 4th year, the Jab J’Ouvert event at Southlands Park has never resulted in damage, the spokesperson said.
Response from the Ministry of Public Works & Environment:
“This is the 4th year of this event in Southlands Park. No damage has ever been done. COA Entertainment follows all proper procedures to host this event inclusive of adhering to strict deadlines for documentation. The event is only permitted to proceed once the required approvals and documentation are in place.
“COA Entertainment pays their fees, they hire security, has insurance, engages St. John’s Ambulance, has Parks staff on site, have cleaning crews, and only operates on the open lawn in front of the main building.
“The protected woodland space within Southlands is on the eastern side of the park, as indicated by the Planning map attached (image below). Woodland Reserve is a protected zoning category, and if the event were proposed to take place within that woodland, it would not have been approved. The red arrow on the map indicates where the open lawn is that the event is hosted within.”
