De Medeiros helps Toronto secure podium at Don Mills Open

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues cross country team showcased strong early-season form at the Don Mills Open, with Bermudian runner Liana De Medeiros helping the women’s team secure a third-place finish overall with 65 points.

The team’s success was anchored by two superb performances at the top of the leader board. Fifth-year student Julia Agostinelli, the reigning U SPORTS 1500m champion, dominated the Women’s 6km race, taking the individual victory with a time of 21:20. Her powerful run saw her finish 3.9 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, continuing her standout career.

Not far behind, fourth-year student Sarah White secured a podium finish, stopping the clock at 22:24 to claim third place overall.

Rounding out the top three scoring runners for the Varsity Blues was Bermuda’s Liana De Medeiros. The Bermudian delivered a valuable effort, finishing 14th overall with a time of 23:07.

McDaniel leads Northeast Elite as Muso shoots career-low 70

The McDaniel College men’s golf team has seized the early lead at the Northeast Elite tournament, recording a superb team score of 1-under par 283 in the opening round at Williamsport Country Club. McDaniel holds a commanding seven-stroke advantage over second-place Rochester (290).

The team’s phenomenal start was anchored by three players finishing inside the individual top 10, including a career-best effort from freshman Dylan Muso.

Muso, in a breakout round, carded a career-low 1-under par 70 to finish the day tied for fourth place on the individual leader board. His impressive round included five birdies, three of which came across the final four holes on the front nine, allowing him to close the first nine at one-under par (35).

Shein enters bricks-and-mortar retail in France, sparking backlash

The stores in the BHV department store in central Paris and Galeries Lafayette department stores in five other French cities mark a new step for Shein

International News via Reuters:

Online fast-fashion retailer Shein plans to open its first bricks-and-mortar shops in France in November under an agreement with department store owner Société des Grands Magasins, a move that sparked criticism from French retailers.

The stores in the BHV department store in central Paris and Galeries Lafayette department stores in five other French cities mark a new step for Shein, which has up to now only hosted temporary marketing-driven pop-ups around the world.

SGM president Frédéric Merlin said the launch would attract a younger clientele, adding that a customer might buy a Shein item and a designer handbag on the same day.

Galeries Lafayette, which sold the stores operated by SGM under its name through a franchise agreement, said it opposed the move, which would violate the franchise agreement, and plans to stop it from happening.

“Galeries Lafayette profoundly disagrees with this decision with regards to the positioning and practices of this ultra fast fashion brand that is in contradiction with its offer and values,” the group said in a statement.

RETAILERS CRITICISE DEPARTMENT STORE DEAL WITH SHEIN

Shein, which sells 12-euro dresses and 20-euro jeans, faces pressure from other retailers, politicians and regulators in France, where lawmakers have backed a draft law regulating fast fashion that would, if implemented, ban Shein from advertising.

“In front of the Paris City Hall, they are creating the new Shein megastore, which – after destroying dozens of French brands – aims to flood our market even more massively with disposable products,” Yann Rivoallan, head of fashion retail association Fédération Francaise du Pret-a-Porter, said in a statement.

French retailers were already struggling to compete with Zara and H&M when Shein launched, drawing cost-conscious consumers in with its discounts.

Several French fast-fashion retailers such as Jennyfer and NafNaf went into insolvency proceedings earlier this year.

SHEIN’S BRICKS-AND-MORTAR LAUNCH BRINGS CHALLENGES

Shein sells clothes and accessories at rock-bottom prices thanks to its business model of sending parcels direct from factories in China to shoppers around the world, benefiting from customs rules giving low-value e-commerce parcels an exemption from duties.

Shein executives have said its success is due to its online-only business model, meaning it has little unsold inventory, unlike bricks-and-mortar retailers.

Setting up physical stores is a big departure from that model, requiring the company to maintain inventory in stores, which will add to running costs.

It comes as Shein adapts to changes in its biggest market, the U.S., where its “de minimis” duty exemption for low-value parcels is ending. The European Union is planning to do the same.

Shein’s first store, on the sixth floor of the BHV, will open in early November, with later openings planned in Galeries Lafayette department stores in Dijon, Grenoble, Reims, Limoges, and Angers.

Executive Chairman Donald Tang has said in interviews that Shein is especially popular in provincial and rural areas where he says customers have fewer options for fashionable clothes.

Cross scores twice but Buckingham Swans suffer defeat

Sarah Cross led the scoring effort for the Buckingham Swans Whites, but her side ultimately fell to a heavy 61-29 defeat against West Bridgford Ladies in the Women’s Championship Rugby North 1 Division.

Despite the comprehensive loss, the match saw a standout individual performance from the Bermudian. Cross was the primary attacking threat for the Swans, personally accounting for ten of her team’s points. She crossed the line twice on the day, scoring two tries to lead the Buckingham Swans Whites’ scoring.

Two dead in attack at UK synagogue on Yom Kippur, suspect shot dead

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect, who was wearing a vest that appeared to be an explosive device, was shot dead after officers rushed to the scene

International News via Reuters:

Two people were killed on Thursday when a man drove a car into pedestrians and stabbed a security guard in an attack at a synagogue in England where worshippers were marking Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, British police said.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect, who was wearing a vest that appeared to be an explosive device, was shot dead after officers rushed to the scene at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in the Crumpsall district of the city in northern England.

A video shared on social media and verified by Reuters showed police shooting a man inside the synagogue’s perimeter, while another man lay on the floor in a pool of blood, appearing to wear a traditional Jewish head covering.

‘HE HAS A BOMB!’

“He has a bomb, go away!” an armed police officer shouted to onlookers, just seconds before a gunshot rang out.

Neighbour Angela Crawshaw told Reuters she had seen three policemen aiming guns at a man in the car park of the synagogue, telling him: “Stay down, don’t move or we’ll shoot.”

“Then they did shoot, and he fell to the floor. Then he tried getting up again and moving again, and they shot him again. And then it was just panic … just noise and panic.”

A bomb disposal unit was later called to the scene, and a Reuters witness heard three small explosions. Police confirmed that one loud bang was specialist officers gaining entry to the suspect’s vehicle as a precaution.

Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer, Laurence Taylor, said the attack had been declared a terrorist incident based on what investigators knew, and that two people had been arrested.

He said investigators believed they knew the identity of the attacker but were not able to confirm it yet.

“Communities across the UK who would normally be marking this holy day are now grieving, and worried about their safety,” he told reporters. “I want to be clear: UK policing is mobilising. And mobilising fast.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer rushed away early from a European political gathering in Copenhagen to return to Britain to chair an emergency meeting. He said additional police were being deployed to synagogues across the country, adding: “We will do everything to keep our Jewish community safe.”

“The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.”

THREE OTHERS IN SERIOUS CONDITION

As well as the suspect and two members of the public who were confirmed dead, three other people were in a serious condition.

After the attack, police were seen ushering a large group of mostly Jewish elderly men – some in tears, many looking shocked – away from the synagogue. Some were wearing white robes, others were in suits and wearing a skullcap.

Crawshaw said she saw about 30 people being taken out, including three young children.

“There were a large number of worshippers attending the synagogue at the time of this attack, but thanks to the immediate bravery of security staff and the worshippers inside, as well as the fast response of police, the attacker was prevented from gaining access,” said Stephen Watson, GMP’s Chief Constable.

King Charles said he was “deeply shocked and saddened” while the Israeli embassy in London said on X the attack was “abhorrent and deeply distressing”, and that it was in close contact with the Manchester Jewish community.

SUSPECT WAS ‘STABBING ANYONE NEAR HIM’

Another neighbour by the synagogue, Chava Lewin, said she had been told that the car had been driving erratically before crashing into the gates of the building.

“The second he got out of the car he started stabbing anyone near him. He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue,” she told British media.

Yom Kippur is the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar when even many non-regular synagogue-goers take time to pray and all road traffic stops in Israel.

Britain reported its second worst year in modern times for antisemitism in 2024 with more than 3,500 incidents being recorded, reflecting sustained levels of hatred towards Jews, the Community Security Trust, which provides security to Jewish organisations across Britain, said earlier this year.

Levels of antisemitism rose to record levels in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s subsequent war in Gaza that has widely demolished the small Palestinian enclave.

Attacks on Jews and Jewish targets have risen worldwide since the Gaza conflict erupted, including in France and Germany where incidents have surged. French President Emmanuel Macron said on X that France stood beside Britain’s Jewish community.

Since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Britain has suffered a number of Islamist militant attacks, with the worst being the July 2005 suicide bombings in the London transport network which killed 52 people.

More recently, a 2017 suicide bomb attack at the end of an Ariana Grande pop concert in Manchester killed 22 people and injured hundreds. British police and security services say 43 late-stage attack plots have been thwarted since March 2017.

British police have in recent years also warned about the threat from organised far-right terrorism.

‘Maybe there’s hope’: Indonesian rescuers race against time to save students trapped under collapsed school

The Al Khoziny school, located in the East Java town of Sidoarjo collapsed when its foundations could not support ongoing construction work on the upper floors

International News via Reuters:

Rescuers were racing against time on Thursday to extricate some 60 teenagers trapped under the remains of an Islamic boarding school that collapsed earlier this week due to foundation failure, disaster authorities said.

The Al Khoziny school, located in the East Java town of Sidoarjo some 480 miles east from the capital Jakarta, collapsed when its foundations could not support ongoing construction work on the upper floors, cratering upon dozens of students who were praying and trapping them under rubble.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson with the disaster mitigation agency, said in a statement on Thursday that 59 people remained trapped, based on the school’s list of absences and missing person reports filed by families.

Rescuers found no signs of life on Thursday after calling out the names of the victims and using motion detectors and scanners to track movements or vital signs, search and rescue agency official Emi Freezer told Reuters.

In signature orange uniform, rescuers crawled through narrow tunnels to find students trapped under rubble, according to photos distributed by the agency.

Late on Wednesday, Yudhi Bramantyo, operations director at the agency, said the total death toll from the collapse had reached six, although the country’s disaster mitigation agency said on Thursday it was still at five.

“We can’t let our minds wander. Maybe there is still hope for our little brothers,” Bramantyo said.

A crane has been deployed on Thursday to lift light, unconnected debris, Freezer said.

Al Khoziny is an Islamic school known locally as a pesantren.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has a total of about 42,000 pesantren, serving 7 million students, according to data from the country’s religious affairs ministry.

Waiting along with other anxious parents convening around a whiteboard showing a list of survivors, Ahmad Ikhsan, 52, was still holding out hope that his 14-year-old son, Arif Affandi, would be found.

“Until now, I haven’t heard about my son,” he said. “I believe my son is still alive.”

Scaffolding collapse in Ethiopian church kills at least 36

The temporary wooden structure gave way on Wednesday under the weight of worshippers visiting Arerti St Mary’s Church in Minjar Shenkora Woreda

International News via Reuters:

At least 36 people were killed and more than 200 injured at a religious festival in central Ethiopia when wooden scaffolding collapsed underneath them inside a partially constructed church, police and a survivor said.

The temporary wooden structure gave way on Wednesday under the weight of worshippers visiting Arerti St Mary’s Church in Minjar Shenkora Woreda, North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region, local police chief Ahmed Gebeyehu told state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting.

The death toll could rise as some of the injured remained in critical condition, Gebeyehu said.

“What caused the damage was when the scaffolding crumpled. It just crushed the people beneath. Some who were on the peripheries ran outside, but those in the middle perished,” said Tadesse Tesfaye, a survivor.

A day after the incident, victims’ shoes and sandals lay in a pile next to broken masonry and snapped scaffolding poles. The twisted remains of the scaffold remained in place beneath the church’s freshly painted dome.

Lloyds and Schroders to end UK wealth joint venture, FT reports

Taking full control would give Lloyds greater oversight and flexibility to sell a broader range of products to its more than 3 million mass affluent customers

International News via Reuters:

Britain’s Lloyds Banking Group will take control of Schroders’ 49.9% stake in their joint venture after the business struggled with growth targets and high executive turnover, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Under the plans, Lloyds and Schroders are set to abandon the wealth management venture, Schroders Personal Wealth (SPW), which targeted the “mass affluent” section of the market, the report said citing people familiar with the matter.

Lloyds and Schroders both declined to comment on the report, while SPW did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taking full control would give Lloyds greater oversight and flexibility to sell a broader range of products to its more than 3 million mass affluent customers, a person familiar with the matter told the FT.

The partnership, launched in 2019 by Lloyds’ ex-CEO António Horta-Osório and Schroders’ former chief Peter Harrison, started with 13 billion pounds of assets transferred from Lloyds and had grown to 15.7 billion pounds under management by December 2024.

In July, Lloyds Banking Group reported a 5% rise in first-half profit, driven by higher income from mortgages and unsecured consumer lending despite broader UK economic challenges.
