Top Philippine senator to seek dismissal of Duterte impeachment case

Comes after a stronger-than-expected showing for allies of Duterte in recent midterm elections

International news via Reuters:

A top Philippine senator has drafted a resolution seeking to dismiss an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, his office said on Wednesday, which could boost her chances of political survival after an acrimonious fallout with the president.

The lower house in February impeached Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, on accusations that included budget anomalies, amassing unusual wealth and an alleged threat to the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the first lady, and the house speaker.

Sara Duterte faces a lifetime ban from office if convicted in a Senate trial. She has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

The resolution was drafted, according to his office, by Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a staunch ally of Duterte and a former police chief under her father’s 2016-2022 presidency. A Senate source, who declined to be identified, confirmed the draft was circulating among senators.

The draft seen by Reuters says the Senate did not act promptly to begin proceedings upon receipt of the impeachment article, so the case was “de facto dismissed” as 100 days had already passed.

It was not immediately clear when the resolution would be filed or how much support it would have.

If it succeeds, it could intensify an escalating battle for power between Marcos and former ally Duterte ahead of a 2028 presidential election that she is widely expected to contest, with Marcos limited to a single term and unable to run again.

At stake is the legacy and future influence of Marcos, who has waged a decades-long campaign to defend his family’s name from what he says are false historical narratives of plunder and brutality during the 1970s and 1980s rule of his strongman father and namesake.

The effort to dismiss the case comes after a stronger-than-expected showing for allies of Duterte in last month’s midterm elections, demonstrating her popularity and unswerving influence, despite the row with Marcos, humiliating legislative enquiries and the arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court of her father in March.

The Senate’s current session ends next week, which the draft resolution said was insufficient time to act on the impeachment case. A new Senate will convene in late July.

“The matter cannot cross over to the incoming 20th Congress,” the draft said.

Marcos has called for unity among all political camps and has distanced himself from the impeachment of Duterte, which was backed overwhelmingly by a lower house controlled by his allies. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dela Rosa’s proposed resolution.

UK’s Reeves okays $21 billion of transport projects outside London

Britain suffers extremely poor rates of productivity in its cities outside the capital

International news via Reuters:

British finance minister Rachel Reeves will on Wednesday commit 15.6 billion pounds ($21.1 billion) of funds for transport projects in cities outside London, dogged by years of under-investment and unfulfilled promises.

In a speech in Manchester, northwest England, Reeves is due to announce the first investment commitments from her June 11 Spending Review – which sets the budgets for government departments for the rest of the parliamentary term, the finance ministry said.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government, which suffered heavy defeats in local elections this year, is under pressure to show it is delivering improvements to public services and infrastructure.

Britain suffers extremely poor rates of productivity in its cities outside the capital when compared to peer countries, with outdated and limited transport links identified by organisations like the OECD as a key factor.

“A Britain that is better off cannot rely on a handful of places forging ahead of the rest of the country,” Reeves said in excerpts of her speech provided by the finance ministry.

She added that this kind of thinking created growth in too few places and had created large gaps between regions.

Most of the 15.6 billion pounds of investment was earmarked by the previous Conservative government of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak when he cancelled part of a high-speed north-south rail line and promised to reallocate the cash to local projects.

However, many city regions have been left waiting for a go-ahead from London.

Wednesday’s announcement represents a budget commitment to fund transport projects between 2027/28 and 2031/32.

They include investments in metro networks in the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, the North East and South Yorkshire, as well as a first mass transit system for West Yorkshire – a city region of 2.3 million people.

“These projects can then give firms involved in the supply chains real confidence to start planning and investing in their local economies,” said Jonny Haseldine, head of business environment at the British Chambers of Commerce.

Britain has held periodic government spending reviews since 1998, but this is the first since 2015 to cover multiple years, other than one in 2021 focused on the COVID pandemic.

The non-partisan Institute for Fiscal Studies said on Monday this spending review could prove to be “one of the most significant domestic policy events” for the Labour government.

Indonesian jailed for Bali bombing starts coffee business

The former member of al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group was jailed for 20 years in 2012

International news via Reuters:

An Indonesian convicted in the deadly 2002 Bali nightclub bombings has launched his own coffee business after being released on parole, and has said he will use some of the earnings to help survivors of the attacks.

Umar Patek, a member of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group, was jailed for 20 years in 2012 after he was found guilty of making bombs that ripped through two Bali nightclubs, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians. He was released on parole in 2022 and has apologised to the victims.

Patek’s release sparked anger in Australia and Indonesia.

At the launch of the coffee business on Tuesday, a banner with Patek’s face festooned a cafe in the Indonesian city of Surabaya on Java island. It is owned by dentist David Andreasmito and will use the beans Patek supplies and roasts.

“I was still shell-shocked by the outside world,” Patek said, adding he had trouble finding work after his release and was worried his image would affect the business.

“The stigma of a former terrorism convict made it hard for me to find work,” he said.

Patek said he understood that many people were still angry with him but pleaded to them “not to let that doubt stick”, adding he would give portions of his earnings to survivors.

David said he went into business with Patek because he had apologised and wanted people to give him a second chance.

Since Patek’s release, Indonesian authorities have highlighted him as an example of the deradicalisation efforts launched by the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country to counter a resurgence in Islamic militancy.

Chusnul Chotimah, a survivor of the Bali attacks who is covered in burn scars and says she struggles to pay for life-saving treatments, jostled in front of the crowd to speak to Patek at the launch.

“I used to have grudges against you,” she said. “I forgive you for what you did. I know you’ve changed for the better.”

Chusnul later said she hoped Patek could help out the survivors. “Don’t just say sorry,” she said.

Tumini, another survivor, said in Bali’s capital Denpasar that she is still struggling to pay for her treatment and that government aid should be prioritised for victims still in recovery.

EU picks 13 new critical material projects, including in Greenland

Most of the new projects will be focused on materials essential for electric vehicle batteries

FILE PHOTO: European Union flags flutter outside the EU Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium March 18, 2025. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo

International news via Reuters:

The European Commission on Wednesday announced 13 new raw material projects outside the bloc to increase its supplies of metals and minerals essential for it to stay competitive in the energy transition as well as defence and aerospace.

The EU’s announcement follows China’s decision in April to impose export curbs on rare earth magnets until new licences are obtained, leaving diplomats, carmakers and other executives from Europe and elsewhere scrambling to secure meetings with Beijing officials and avert factory shutdowns.

China controls more than 90% of global processing capacity for the magnets, used in everything from vehicles and fighter jets to home appliances. Beijing is also the main supplier of many key inputs for renewable energy, especially rare earths, batteries and solar panels, a situation Brussels is keen to change.

The EU list is part of the implementation of the Critical Raw Material Act agreed in 2023 under which the bloc aims to mine 10%, process 40% and recycle 25% of its needs by 2030.

Most of the new projects will be focused on materials essential for electric vehicle batteries and battery storage including lithium, cobalt, manganese and graphite. Two projects for rare earths are located in Malawi and South Africa. Rare earths are used to produce magnets in wind turbines.

The projects are located in Britain, Canada, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine, Zambia, Brazil and the French territory of New Caledonia.

The British project is to extract tungsten and the ones in Ukraine and Greenland will be for graphite, with the project in Greenland run by GreenRoc Strategic Materials.

Greenland has been a point of tension between Brussels and Washington this year after U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly said he wanted to acquire the Danish overseas territory.

U.S. officials have discussed a plan to pull Greenland into America’s sphere of influence with a type of agreement called COFA that the United States has used to maintain close ties with several Pacific Island nations. Under COFA, the U.S. government offers essential services and in exchange, the U.S. military operates freely while trade with the U.S. is largely duty-free.

The EU has estimated that the projects would need an overall capital investment of 5.5 billion euros ($6.27 billion) to get off the ground. They would receive coordinated financial support and buyer interest from the Commission, member states and lenders.

The new list brings the total number of strategic projects to 60. In March, the Commission announced 47 projects within the EU.

Opinion: Men need to address their health challenges

MP Robin Tucker on Men’s Health Month: “ … societal expectations around masculinity often discourage men from expressing vulnerability or seeking help for mental health concerns.”

Robin Tucker      Photo: OBA

Statement by Shadow Health Minister Robin Tucker,
MP for Constituency 7, Hamilton South:

Several countries around the world set aside the month of June to focus on Men’s Health.
It is an important time for reminding men about the importance of prioritizing their physical, mental, emotional health and encouraging them to take action to do so.
It is broadly understood that prostate cancer is a key issue affecting men’s health accounting for 33% of all male cancer diagnoses.  Prostate cancer has no racial boundaries but does have high incidence and mortality rates, particularly affecting Black men.
Lifestyle and dietary habits play a key role in health outcomes, often giving rise to health challenges such as obesity, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
Mental health and substance use disorders are also significant contributors to health challenges among men.  According to the American Journal of Men’s Health “Mental health among men often goes untreated because they are far less likely to seek mental health treatment than women. Depression and suicide are ranked as a leading cause of death among men. Six million men are affected by depression in the United States every single year. Men die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women”.
There are many contributors to this, but one reason is that societal expectations around masculinity often discourage men from expressing vulnerability or seeking help for mental health concerns.  Although societal views are changing, we must pick up the pace.
As we kick off Men’s Health Month, I encourage all of Bermuda’s men, both young and old, to take time to understand your specific health needs and what you can do to improve them.  Take care of your mind and body – don’t delay getting an annual check-up, make mindful dietary decisions, start a new exercise routine, and establish strong social support networks.  Also, learn about the community resources that are available to support your specific needs or interests.
Observing Men’s Health Month helps raise awareness of men’s health needs, and it can also be a critical motivator for helping to reduce preventable diseases directly impacting the overall wellbeing of men and their families, but also our broader community..

Cartier tells customers some data stolen in cyberattack

The company said it had further enhanced the protection of its systems and data

International news via Reuters:

Cartier, the luxury jewellery company owned by Richemont, had its website hacked and some client data stolen, it told customers, according to an email seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

The attack is the latest case of a company being targeted by cyber criminals, with several retailers including Marks & Spencer and Victoria’s Secret disclosing similar incidents.

Cartier, whose watches, necklaces and bracelets have been worn by Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie and Michelle Obama, said “an unauthorised party gained temporary access to our system.”

“Limited client information”, such as names, e-mail addresses and countries, had been obtained, Cartier said in the email. “The affected information did not include any passwords, credit card details or other banking information,” it said, noting it had since contained the issue.

The company said it had further enhanced the protection of its systems and data, as well as informed the relevant authorities, and was also working with “leading external cybersecurity experts.”

Cartier did not respond to a request for comment.

Julius Cerniauskas, CEO of web intelligence firm Oxylabs, said the breach showed no brand is safe from cybercrime.

“Attackers are becoming more opportunistic and sophisticated, targeting brands that hold valuable customer data, not just credit card numbers,” he said.

U.S. lingerie company Victoria’s Secret on Tuesday disclosed that a security incident relating to its information technology systems had forced it to temporarily shut down its website for a few days last week.

Victoria’s Secret said the breach did not impact its financial results for the first quarter or cause a material disruption to its operations, but warned that its second quarter could be hit by the additional expenses incurred following the incident.

British retailer Marks & Spencer said last month a “highly sophisticated and targeted” cyberattack in April will cost it about 300 million pounds ($405 million) in lost profits.

Fashion brand The North Face, owned by VF Corporation, has also emailed some customers, saying it discovered a “small-scale” attack in April this year.

The company told customers the hackers used “credential stuffing”, trying usernames and passwords stolen from another data breach in the hope customers have reused the credentials across multiple accounts, the BBC said on Tuesday.

VF Corp did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

London department store Harrods also said last month hackers had attempted to break into its systems, following incidents at Marks & Spencer, and the Co-op Group.
