An update from Parliament today on long-awaited landlord and tenant act amendments.

Home Affairs Minister Alexa Lightbourne said the rental market has operated under two outdated statutes and are in need of reform to enhance protections for both landlords and tenants.

The drive behind the bill is too increase the island’s housing stock and promote amicable tenancy.

She explained the current laws are outdated posing challenges such as fragmentation, duplication and inconsistency.

The new proposed amendments, she said, seek to remedy resolutions with regard to deposits and late fees, unlawful evictions and harassment.
