Bermudian freshman wing Ralph Scott has faced the media in Knoxville for his first formal press conference since joining Tennessee, lifting the lid on his transition to SEC basketball and the demanding regime under head coach Rick Barnes.
After six weeks with the Volunteers program, the 6ft 9in former IMG Academy player reflected on his early adjustments, his physical transformation, and shedding old court habits.
Scott’s introduction to life at the Division I level proved an eye-opener during grueling post-practice sessions.
“My welcome to college moment was definitely some sprints after practice… First time in a while that I’ve thrown up after a practice,” Scott admitted.
Despite the intense conditioning, the Florida-raised prospect—who has already put on over 20lbs—emphasized his rapid development in on-ball defense and shooting accuracy under Barnes’ high-intensity setup.
Operating primarily as a two/three guard, Scott acknowledged that assistant coach Gregg Polinsky and the training staff are pushing him to be far more assertive on the floor.
“I’ve played with a lot of really good players, so I think I’ve just developed that habit,” Scott noted regarding deferring to teammates. “But they’re telling me I’ve got to get rid of it, so I’m going to do what I’m told.”
With his eyes firmly set on realizing his full potential in Knoxville, the versatile wing insists he is ready to embrace whatever role necessary to help the Volunteers compete at the top of the SEC.
