The cockpit voice recorder has been recovered from an air ambulance on which two Bermudians are believed to have died when the aircraft vanished.

The voice recorder is one of the two ‘black boxes’ which may help investigators determine what happened to the flight.

The upper third of the cockpit has also been recovered.

Bermudian mother and son Marilyn Lavonne Bean and Sergio Wayne Lottimore were on a Latitude Air Ambulance flight which disappeared en route from Bermuda to Boston on Saturday October 3rd.

Canadian Pilots Captain Philip Gregory Childerhose and First Officer Thomas Henry Farquhar were also lost in the tragedy, as were flight nurse Sarah Jane Paton, and respiratory therapist Jolene Beth Weir.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada have been leading an investigation into the incident, after the U.S. Coast Guard found debris in the ocean south of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.

The Canada TSB updated the public on the investigation today…

“The TSB, working in coordination with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Coast Guard, has recovered the upper third of the occurrence aircraft’s cockpit, as well as the cockpit voice recorder. Both will be transported to TSB’s Engineering Laboratory in Ottawa for further examination.”

“The investigation is ongoing. The TSB will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”

In a previous release, the TSB highlighted the importance of the the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder to the investigation…

“The two recorders (black boxes) are a key element to determining what happened during the occurrence. While it is possible to investigate the occurrence without the black box, those recorders contain a lot of information that would aid in the conduct of the investigation.”
