Journey to democracy: 2026 sees 60th anniversary of pivotal event

It was a pivotal moment in Bermuda’s journey towards democracy – the 1966 London Constitutional Conference.
Its 60th anniversary is being marked by events next week that the public is encouraged to participate in.
The conference helped establish the constitutional framework that led to Bermuda’s first General Election under Universal Adult Suffrage, on the May 22, 1968.
Before then, a system divided by race and class meant that only seven per cent of the population was legally allowed to vote.
Activist Glenn Fubler and Anglican Bishop Nicholas Dill share why it’s important to acknowledge the significance of what happened 60 years ago – and also tell us about the events next week to mark the occasion.
