Bermudian all-rounder Isaiah O’Brien produced a sensational display of power hitting to lead the Ontario Cricket Academy (OCA) to a convincing six-wicket victory over Youngstar Under-19 in their Canadian International Festival Under-19 opener.
O’Brien smashed an explosive 86 runs off just 34 deliveries, turning a rain-affected run chase into a procession as OCA comfortably surpassed their revised target.
After weather interrupted play during the opening innings, Youngstar U19 managed 117-6 from 15.2 overs.
Kanishq Pahwa anchored the Youngstar innings with a top score of 55, while Rishit Badheka proved the stand-out operator among the OCA bowling attack, recording figures of 1-10 from 1.2 overs. O’Brien chipped in with 1-19 across his three overs.
Set a revised DLS target of 125 from 16 overs, OCA made light work of the pursuit, reaching 125-3 in just 11.4 overs.
O’Brien was the undisputed star of the chase, clearing the rope nine times and striking six boundaries in his 34-ball rampage.
Despite Saumya Bhatt’s best efforts for Youngstar U19—taking 2-16 from his three overs—OCA sealed an emphatic opening day win with 26 balls to spare.
OBA makes clear that it is not against lowering the cost of essential goods, but takes issue with Government’s approach
Statement by Dwayne Robinson, Shadow Minister of Home Affairs:
Recently, the Cost of Living Commission Amendment (NO. 2) Act 2026, was delayed for third reading in the Senate. The One Bermuda Alliance understands the intention of the legislation and shares the Government’s goal of lowering the cost of living in Bermuda. However, we think it’s disingenuous to paint that picture that makes it seem as if we do not support lowering the cost of essential goods for the people of Bermuda.
However, we believe this legislation has the potential to do more harm than good for the consumer and will lead to increased cost of doing business, potential job loss, reduced variety or quality of goods and services.
Often in local discourse we have become accustomed to separating the cost of doing business from the cost of living. However, it is the duty of any responsible Government to weigh both these things equally as one begets the other.
How can Bermudians survive the cost of living with limited access to jobs that pay well or limited opportunity for a successful entrepreneurial venture? How can businesses provide well-paying jobs for Bermudians if there are so many barriers to profit due to increasing regulation and red tape siphoning profitability.
The cost of doing business and cost of living is interconnected. In the debate the Progressive Labour Party attempted to separate them. The One Bermuda Alliance believes that you can protect the consumer, add protections for potential price gouging, and ensure that Bermuda is fertile ground for local businesses to thrive.
The amendment brought forward by the PLP will increase the data reporting and regulatory burden on businesses which could present an additional deterrent to enter the grocery, shipping, or any market that falls under this amendment in the future.
Larger entities can spread these new costs but what about the small businesses or new entrepreneurs?
This is why we suggested anti-monopoly laws as a solution instead, which are designed to promote market competition, protect the consumer from price gouging, and prevent larger corporations from engaging in unfair business practices rather than attempt to enter the private sector and try to force prices down without considering the operational reality of running a business in Bermuda.
In our quest to reduce the cost of living, we should not potentially cause a reduction in jobs or opportunities to open businesses for Bermudians. The One Bermuda Alliance does not fight for company profits but for increased opportunities in the local economy, we do not wish to see them potentially reduced.
We see Bermudians forced to compete relentlessly for Insurance and International Business employment opportunities as they present some of the few job opportunities that allow Bermudians to comfortably afford Bermuda’s cost of living. I believe that we should be looking to expand well paying employment opportunities in other sectors of the economy and not make Bermudians clamor over each other to get into one industry. This amendment can potentially stifle additional job creation within various sectors of Bermuda’s economy.
When businesses are struggling, the primary cost they can control is labour. That is usually the first reduction to happen. It is not fear mongering to state clearly the potential risk of Government legislation, in fact it is our duty as the Opposition.
Bermuda is an import-based economy, and we must understand that shipping costs are outside of our direct control. Those costs must be absorbed, and if a business feels it cannot, then it simply will not provide the goods or services.
This Act requires reporting cost increases of essential commodities over 5% and allows the Minster via negative resolution to amend the increase percentage. The Minister, with consultation with the Cost of Living Commission, can designate new essential commodities, making additional goods and services subject to this amendment. This could cause a reduction in variety and quality of goods/ services provided in Bermuda. Businesses may deem it too risky to incur additional costs as they will have additional red tape involved in the pricing of their products or services.
Of course, none of us have a crystal ball so these potential impacts may not happen, and we hope that they do not.
However, the Government dismissing the potential risks is irresponsible and therefore it falls to the Opposition to highlight them and share alternatives.
The One Bermuda Alliance believes that better first steps to address the cost of living in Bermuda would be bringing forward anti-monopoly laws, removing the sugar tax, removing the foreign currency purchasing tax, and empowering the Regulatory Authority with more regulatory teeth.
This is not a debate about pro-business or pro-labour policy. This is about safeguarding the people within our island who together create our economy.
Joshua Bonehill-Paine in 2015 was convicted of racially aggravated harassment of Luciana Berger, then a Labour member of parliament, and had also been imprisoned for stirring up hatred against a north London Jewish community
International News via Reuters:
The leader of Britain’s opposition Conservative Party defended the selection of a former neo-Nazi who had been jailed for hate crimes as a local election candidate, saying on Wednesday that he was rehabilitated and could help fight antisemitism.
Joshua Bonehill-Paine in 2015 was convicted of racially aggravated harassment of Luciana Berger, then a Labour member of parliament, and had also been imprisoned for stirring up hatred against a north London Jewish community.
His selection as a candidate for an election to Somerset council in south-west England drew condemnation from other parties and Jewish groups.
Badenoch said what he did was “appalling” but he had disavowed his previous views and was fit to run for a local council, where he would be “looking at parking, sorting out bins.”
“It’s not a national platform… This man is showing that he’s more than contrite,” she told the BBC, referring to his work with anti-radicalisation programme Prevent, adding she wanted to build a movement against antisemitism in Britain.
Antisemitism has been on the rise in Britain for years and many parties have had to drop candidates or expel politicians.
A Welsh parliament candidate for the right-wing populist Reform UK quit after he was photographed appearing to do a Nazi salute, while the Green Party suspended several candidates accused of antisemitism ahead of local elections in May.
The governing Labour Party was found by the equalities watchdog to have failed in its handling of antisemitism complaints when it was in opposition in 2020. The watchdog said in 2023 that it had taken sufficient steps to tackle the problem.
Badenoch partly defended Bonehill-Paine’s selection by citing Labour’s selection of a former Nazi at a local election in 2012.
Advocacy groups the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council declined an invitation to meet with Bonehill-Paine and urged the Conservatives to rescind their selection.
Berger, who now is a member of parliament’s unelected upper House of Lords, said there was a “massive distinction” between Bonehill-Paine educating others about why what he did was wrong “to making the leap to standing for public office”.
“This is not just one-off ‘hurty words’,” Berger told the BBC. “This is a man that engaged and indulged in a sustained campaign, not just against me, but (also) many others.”

The Financial Conduct Authority said on Wednesday the changes would reduce the execution risk for issuers and lower compliance costs, and included removing a seven-day waiting period for connected research during an IPO
International News via Reuters:
Britain’s financial regulator said it was simplifying listing rules to make the country’s stock market a more attractive place for companies to raise capital, seeking to reverse a prolonged slowdown in flotations.
The Financial Conduct Authority said on Wednesday the changes would reduce the execution risk for issuers and lower compliance costs, and included removing a seven-day waiting period for connected research during an IPO.
London’s stock market has been shrinking for the last decade as companies move away for higher valuations and access to deeper capital markets elsewhere, particularly the United States.
This year has also seen a high number of take-private deals, with foreign takeovers of UK names Intertek, Tate & Lyle and Segro, partly a result of British stocks becoming cheaper compared to U.S. stocks since the start of the Iran war.
The FCA said it hoped the finalisation of the new rules, on which it has been consulting since late last year, will help replenish the UK’s depleted stock market.
The FCA said the changes would make it easier for companies looking to list in Britain.
“By making the UK listing regime more efficient, we are supporting the growth and competitiveness of UK capital markets,” FCA director of infrastructure and exchanges Jon Relleen said in a statement.

The pope will spend November 6-8 in Uruguay, 8-11 in Argentina and 11-17 in Peru
International News via Reuters:
Pope Leo will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, the Vatican announced on Wednesday, in a major trip for the Catholic leader who spent decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru before becoming pope last year.
The pope will spend November 6-8 in Uruguay, 8-11 in Argentina and 11-17 in Peru, the Vatican said.
Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff, is also a citizen of Peru, where he served as bishop of Chiclayo, in the northwest, from 2015 to 2023.
The pope will visit Chiclayo as well as Lima, Cusco and Pucallpa while in Peru, the Vatican said. In Argentina, he will visit Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Lujan. In Uruguay, he will visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida.
The Vatican did not offer further details about the visits, saying the full itineraries would be made available later.
A Catholic pope has not visited South America since the late Pope Francis made a trip to Chile and Peru in 2018. Francis, originally from Argentina and the first pope from the Americas, never made a visit to his home country as pontiff.

Iranian authorities killed thousands of people during anti-government protests in January, Iran’s worst domestic unrest in decades
International News via Reuters:
At least 56 people have been executed in Iran on national security-related charges since March 19, including 27 in cases linked to protests at the start of the year, United Nations human rights chief Volker Tuerk said on Wednesday.
“I am alarmed by the rise in executions and death sentences issued in Iran since March, and that capital punishment continues to be used to instil fear among the population and suppress dissent,” Tuerk said in a statement.
Iranian authorities killed thousands of people during anti-government protests in January, Iran’s worst domestic unrest in decades.
Rights groups say the government has continued to crack down on opponents during the war – sparked by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran since the end of February.
Tuerk said more than 100 people face the risk of execution on similar security-related charges, while executions for drug-related offences were also continuing at an “alarming rate.”
He urged Tehran to halt all executions, move towards abolishing the death penalty and raised concerns about what he described as failures to uphold fair trial and due process.
Iran’s diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iranian officials have defended the country’s judicial processes and the use of capital punishment as consistent with domestic law and necessary for public security.

Brent crude futures were up $1.51, or 1.9%, at $80.87 a barrel by 1123 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures gained 90 cents, or 1.19%, to $76.67
International News via Reuters:
Oil prices rose on Wednesday after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels said they attacked a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea, denting hopes of a de-escalation in Iran war hostilities that could restore shipping traffic and oil flows in the Middle East.
Brent crude futures were up $1.51, or 1.9%, at $80.87 a barrel by 1123 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures gained 90 cents, or 1.19%, to $76.67.
The Houthis said they had launched a missile attack on a Saudi oil tanker off the coast of Yanbu, a key port for Saudi crude oil exports. That drove oil prices higher on Wednesday, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said. Saudi officials did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
The reports of the attack dented investor hopes of a de-escalation in the Middle East conflict after Qatar said on Tuesday that mediators were making progress with efforts to end the war. That drove down oil prices by 5% on Tuesday, with Brent closing below $80 a barrel for the first time since July 13.
Tehran, meanwhile, denied that peace talks were under way, contrary to assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“While the immediate geopolitical premium has unwound, the broader supply picture warrants caution,” said Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova.
Before the war started, about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The main sticking point appears to be whether Iran will continue to insist on a degree of control over the waterway, and whether the U.S. will stand its ground and refuse that outcome,” IG analysts said in a note.
U.S. crude and gasoline inventories rose while distillate stocks fell last week, market sources said on Tuesday, citing data from the American Petroleum Institute.
Crude stocks rose by about 2.7 million barrels in the week to July 31, the sources said.
Elsewhere, China further relaxed controls on fuel exports in August.

Uncertainty is estimated to have reduced euro zone economic growth by 0.4% between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026 as firms and households curbed spending, and it will continue to weigh on activity for the rest of the year
International News via Reuters:
Uncertainty created by wars and trade friction will continue to weigh on euro zone economic growth this year, but a shift in business investment towards intangible assets such as AI seems to be mitigating the drag, the ECB said on Wednesday.
Uncertainty is estimated to have reduced euro zone economic growth by 0.4% between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026 as firms and households curbed spending, and it will continue to weigh on activity for the rest of the year.
But spending on intangibles seems to be more resilient, and corporate surveys suggest that oversized spending on artificial intelligence so far this year is providing a buffer for an economy that is only seen growing by 1% in 2026.
“To the extent that the ongoing shift in the composition of investment towards intangibles continues, the aggregate response of investment to uncertainty shocks may become more muted over time,” the ECB said in an Economic Bulletin article.
“Such a compositional shift could therefore act as a gradual stabiliser of the investment cycle, even as uncertainty itself remains a significant driver of macroeconomic fluctuations,” the ECB added.
Households also curb spending in times of uncertainty, postponing big-ticket item purchases such as cars, but the overall drag is relatively small and spending recovers quite quickly after uncertainty eases, the ECB added.
Business spending on tangibles normally takes a much bigger hit and remains subdued for quite some time even after the shock, the ECB added.

Investors took some heart from U.S. President Donald Trump saying his administration had held “very good discussions” with Iran during all-day negotiations on Tuesday, which kept the oil price around $80 a barrel
International News via Reuters:
The pound edged up on Wednesday, with most gains coming against the yen, which steadied after several rounds of intervention.
Investors took some heart from U.S. President Donald Trump saying his administration had held “very good discussions” with Iran during all-day negotiations on Tuesday, which kept the oil price around $80 a barrel.
Sterling was a touch stronger against both the dollar and the euro, trading at $1.347 and 0.856 pence, respectively, while rising 0.2% against the Japanese currency to 212.33 yen.
Caxton currency strategist David Stritch said the pound “remains a little adrift of motivation”, given its lack of volatility.
The yen is not far off its strongest against the dollar in three months, following historic intervention by Japanese and U.S. officials late last week. Against the pound, it is near its strongest in five months.
UK markets were unruffled by a report from The Times that British Treasury officials are looking at possibly raising billions of pounds in extra borrowing by using flexibility within the government’s fiscal rules.
Finance minister John Healey told the newspaper there was “scope for more and more rapid investment”. It said the cash could be spent on infrastructure, housing and help for business.
Former finance minister Rachel Reeves changed Britain’s fiscal rules in 2024 to take into account public sector assets when considering the government’s debt levels, offering the possibility of more public borrowing for investment.
Meanwhile, a survey of business activity on Wednesday by S&P Global showed Britain’s dominant services sector returned to growth last month as new orders picked up. The survey also showed expectations for activity in the next 12 months were the highest since before the start of the Iran war in February.
“Stronger growth projections for the year ahead partly reflected hopes of de-escalating Middle East tensions and recent signs of easing inflationary pressures,” said Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The Grill, the Beach Club’s all-day restaurant, anchors the experience alongside a spectacular oceanfront infinity pool, private cabanas and dedicated beach service. An expansive event lawn, wellness programming, handcrafted cocktails and live entertainment round out the offering—creating a world-class destination for long, sun-soaked days that transition seamlessly into memorable evenings by the Atlantic.
Palmetto Beach Club was developed by Paris Society Consulting, Ennismore’s in-house F&B studio, which is behind some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants, bars and beach clubs; the experience combines internationally recognized hospitality expertise with a design and atmosphere unmistakably rooted in Bermuda’s character.
“The opening of Palmetto Beach Club is more than the launch of a new destination — it’s the moment we begin welcoming guests back to Fairmont Southampton,” said Kiaran MacDonald, Regional Vice President and General Manager. “It’s an incredibly proud milestone for our entire team and an exciting moment to once again welcome both returning and first-time guests. We’re thrilled to share the first chapter of our transformation with Bermuda and look forward to delivering the exceptional hospitality and heartfelt service we are known for as we continue our journey toward the resort’s full return.”

At its heart is The Grill, an all-day dining destination celebrating Bermuda’s coastal flavors through an elevated yet approachable menu featuring freshly prepared sushi, vibrant salads, premium seafood, expertly grilled steaks, handcrafted pastas and seasonal local ingredients. Complementing the culinary offering is a cocktail program inspired by Bermuda’s rich rum heritage, alongside an evolving calendar of live entertainment, wellness experiences and social gatherings that celebrate the island’s vibrant culture.
