Swing Bridge replacement project starts soon

Government of Bermuda Press Release

The Ministry of Public Works & Environment is advising the public that road realignment works associated with the Swing Bridge Replacement Project are scheduled to begin in the next few weeks, with initial works expected to continue through the early phases of the bridge construction programme.

This phase of the project will introduce a series of temporary and evolving changes to traffic flow, access routes, and public transport arrangements in the St. George’s and St. David’s area.
These works are a necessary step in preparing for the replacement of the Swing Bridge and are intended to support safer, more efficient connectivity in the long term.

As part of the road realignment, the public can expect changes to familiar traffic patterns, adjustments to key routes, and the relocation of certain bus stops. These changes will be implemented in phases and will require residents, commuters, and businesses to adapt how they move through the area during the construction period.

The Ministry is focused on ensuring the public is well informed ahead of the changes.

A spokesman said: “We recognise that these works will have a direct impact on how people move through St. George’s and St. David’s. Our priority is to ensure the public understands what is changing, when it is happening, and how best to prepare. While there will be some disruption, this work is a critical step in delivering long-term improvements to access, safety, and connectivity.”

A phased communications rollout has begun to ensure the public is fully prepared in advance of the start of works. Detailed information, including route changes, traffic management plans, and public transport adjustments, will be shared in the coming weeks to allow for proper planning.

The campaign, “Connecting the Future of St. George’s,” will guide communications around the project, highlighting both the long-term benefits of the works and the short-term changes the public will experience during construction.

The Ministry is encouraging all members of the public to follow official Government and Ministry of Public Works and Environment channels for updates and to review information carefully as it is released.

Smith & Durkin reign supreme on glorious Bermuda Day

Olympic triathlete Tyler Smith and a relentless Maddie Durkin have claimed the ultimate local bragging rights, being crowned the men’s and women’s champions at the spectacular Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby.

Ryan Outerbridge (3rd), Tyler Smith (1st), and Lamont Marshall (3rd)

In the men’s division, Smith showcased his elite international pedigree early on, breaking away from the leading pack to isolate pre-race favorite Ryan Outerbridge. Operating at a blistering tempo, Smith never looked back, storming home to a comfortable victory in an impressive time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 49 seconds.

For Outerbridge, it was a familiar story of heartbreak as he crossed the line in 1:15:06 to settle for a second-place finish for the third consecutive year. Five-time champion Lamont Marshall utilized his immense veteran experience to round out the men’s podium, taking third in 1:15:42.

Christine Dailey (2nd), Maddie Durkin (1st), and Teresa Ruiz (3rd)

Meanwhile, the women’s event belonged entirely to the flying Maddie Durkin. Durkin put on a magnificent display of endurance to finish an incredible 15th overall, stopping the clock at 1:27:56 to seal the women’s crown.

Christine Dailey fought hard to secure the second female spot, placing 19th overall in 1:28:49, while a resilient Teresa Ruiz completed the women’s podium in 25th overall with a time of 1:31:25.

Government House Press Release: HIS MAJESTY THE KINGS’S BERMUDA DAY MESSAGE 2026

Dear Governor,

As the people of Bermuda mark the occasion of Bermuda Day, my wife and I take this opportunity to extend our sincere congratulations to your Premier and to all
those who call Bermuda their home.

I would also like to offer my heartfelt gratitude for the wonderfully warm welcome I received across Bermuda during my visit earlier this month. As I reflect on that visit, I join you in recognising and celebrating the many remarkable young people on these islands. I greatly appreciated seeing at first-hand the conservation work at the Living Classroom on Trunk Island, helping to protect and preserve Bermuda’s unique biodiversity for future generations. Our long-term wellbeing is inseparable from the health of the natural world we inherit, and I am hugely encouraged by the emphasis placed on engaging young people in caring for local habitats.

I have long held a special affection for the Overseas Territories, and I greatly value the unique character, traditions and contributions of each Territory within our wider British family. The strength of community, pride in heritage and commitment to progress are qualities I deeply admire.

My wife and I trust that the coming year will bring continued progress and wellbeing
to the whole community of Bermuda.
