EU rules out UK exemption from carbon border levy until markets link

British industries had hoped to get a temporary exemption from the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) while the carbon market linkage negotiations are underway

International News via Reuters:

The European Union will not exempt Britain from its CO2 emissions fee on imported goods until the two sides link their carbon markets, the bloc’s climate chief said on Wednesday.

British industries had hoped to get a temporary exemption from the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) while the carbon market linkage negotiations are underway.

The UK government has said the EU levy will cost its industry 800 million pounds a year.

EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said Britain would not be exempted from the carbon border levy until its carbon market was linked to the EU’s – a process officials say could take more than a year.

“We’re not exempting anyone, but the moment we will be fully linking those two, it is likely that there will be an exemption at that point in time,” he said.

The UK Cabinet Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hoekstra said Brussels was aware the UK government “would have … liked a different order to this whole set of events”.

“But that is something unfortunately we cannot change,” Hoekstra said, adding that the EU would work constructively with the UK to link the carbon markets.

The EU CBAM will start imposing fees on the bloc’s imports of goods including steel and cement from January. But companies have until a September 2027 deadline to buy CBAM certificates to cover their 2026 emissions and submit them to the EU.

Spanish city evicts hundreds of migrants from occupied building

The building, long occupied by squatters, was cleared under orders from Badalona Mayor Xabier Garcia Albiol of the conservative opposition People’s Party (PP)

International News via Reuters:

Spanish police on Wednesday evicted hundreds of migrants from a former high school in the northeastern city of Badalona, in what a union representing local tenants described as the largest such eviction ever in Spain.

The building, long occupied by squatters, was cleared under orders from Badalona Mayor Xabier Garcia Albiol of the conservative opposition People’s Party (PP), whose views on migration clash with a more permissive stance of Spain’s leftist government.

Brief clashes erupted between riot police and activists and migrants, but most left peacefully carrying their belongings in carts or sat in the street with their luggage, with no other place to go.

Albiol justified the move by the need to fight illegality and crime, which he has often linked to irregular immigration, advocating deportations for offenders.

Spain’s central government has largely embraced migration, highlighting its economic benefits, at a time when other EU countries have been tightening borders and right-wing parties gaining traction with promises of tougher immigration controls.

The tenants’ union and other associations urged authorities to provide housing alternatives for the roughly 400 people evicted, but the migrants, such as 25-year-old undocumented Senegalese man Boubacar, said they had no choice but to sleep rough.

“Tonight our plan is to sleep in the street because we don’t know where to go. And as you can see, it’s raining right now and it’s cold, and we don’t know what to do. We’re going to have to sleep like this; it’s very hard,” said Boubacar, who only gave his first name.

In the same city five years ago, five people died when an industrial building caught fire with West African migrants inside.

Weapons amnesty ends today

Last chance to hand in arms, without repercussions, in special bins

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) reminds the public that today, Wednesday, December 17, 2025 is the last day under the current Weapons Amnesty, for members of the public to drop off weapons and other dangerous articles in the marked surrender bins.

The bins can be easily found outside the three police stations, Hamilton, Southside and Somerset, as well as at Warwick Camp and the two Gorham’s locations, central and west.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Martin Weekes, said, ”We encourage all members of the public who have any prohibited or dangerous weapons that they wish to hand in, to do so today at any of the surrender bin locations, where they will be collected and safely disposed of by the BPS. Please be reminded that all firearms and ammunition that is to be surrendered must be turned in at a police station and cannot be dropped in the bins, for public safety reasons.”

The BPS wish to thank all members of the public who have already dropped off one of the many weapons that have been collected from the bins so far.

Regiment signs new kit deal

Food, clothing and communication equipment are covered in a new agreement with the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence, as well as transportation, medical kit, spare parts and maintenance services

A recently signed agreement between Bermuda’s Ministry of National Security and the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) will deliver efficiencies, savings and improved quality control during the procurement of kit and equipment for the Royal Bermuda Regiment (RBR).

The Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement (MLSA) will allow the RBR to purchase directly from the MOD and its authorised vendors instead of through brokers or on the open market.

Provisions such as food, clothing and communication equipment are covered in the agreement, as well as transportation, medical kit, spare parts and maintenance services.

RBR Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Simons explained: “This agreement enables a pathway for the Regiment to procure items through the Ministry of Defence procurement channels.

“What that means is that we can get equipment of an approved standard at the lowest cost possible rather than working through brokers or purchasing equipment and clothing on the open market.

“It reduces cost, increases quality control and saves a great deal of time and effort.”

The Regiment had for some time recognised challenges related to procurement, owing to its position as a stand-alone unit in terms of day-to-day operations, despite falling under the British Army’s order of battle from a ceremonial perspective.

It was during discussions with British Defence Staff (Washington, DC) – through which the MOD is represented in the United States – that it was determined an MLSA would be an appropriate means to address the issue.

Lt Col Simons noted the efforts of Major Thomas Wood, the RBR’s Second-in-Command and Executive Officer, who played a key role in establishing the arrangement.

The Commanding Officer added: “We’ve settled on a fairly straightforward document that represents a demonstration of the UK’s support to the Regiment and defence in Bermuda.”

His Excellency the Governor Andrew Murdoch CMG, the RBR’s Commander-in-Chief, said: “I’m delighted that this important agreement has been finalised. It will provide an excellent mechanism to use the strength of the UK Armed Forces’ supply chain to help Bermuda.

“My thanks to all those involved in its drafting. It is so good that other Overseas Territories are looking to use it as a template for their military contingents.”

A spokesman for the Ministry of National Security added: “The Ministry of National Security is extremely pleased that this agreement has been reached as it represents significant benefits for the Royal Bermuda Regiment in particular, and Bermuda in general.

“We wholeheartedly support this collaboration and we commend Lt Col Duncan Simons for his work in bringing this to fruition.”

Pin Heads Stun Leaders as Title Race Heats Up

The Commercial Bowling League was turned on its head this week at Warwick Lanes as a shock result at the summit transformed the title race into a dead heat. In the biggest upset of the season so far, ninth-placed Pin Heads delivered a clinical performance to topple league leaders Who Gives A Split with a 3-1 victory. The result has sent shockwaves through the division and leaves the long-time pacesetters looking suddenly vulnerable.

The leaders’ slip-up was perfectly timed for Sweet Life. The second-placed side managed a hard-fought 1-1 draw against third-placed Strike Force, a result that proved just enough to see them move into a tie for the top spot. With both teams now neck-and-neck, the battle for the championship trophy looks set to go down to the wire. Strike Force remain in close attendance in third, though they will rue the missed opportunity to gain more ground on the leading pair.

Elsewhere in the league, Spare Parts moved up the standings with an impressive 3-1 win over fourth-placed Horseshoe Bay Rollers. The victory sees Spare Parts tighten their grip on sixth place and puts them within striking distance of the top four. The battle at the lower end of the table saw seventh-placed Secret Weapons overcome Butt & Vallis in eighth with a 3-1 scoreline, while Too Legit To Split remained stationary in fifth place as they took their scheduled bye week.

Jimenez sidelined as Hibs Academy claim clinical cup win

Hibernian Academy began their 2025/26 CAS Elite League Cup campaign in perfect fashion with a 2-0 victory over St Mirren, despite the absence of Bermuda international Logan Jimenez.

Jimenez, a mainstay in the Hibs youth setup, was forced to watch from the sidelines due to sickness as his teammates navigated a frustratingly tense encounter.

For much of the afternoon, St Mirren proved a stubborn nut to crack, but the deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute. Josh McDonald provided the moment of quality the hosts craved, cutting inside to find the far corner with a fine curling strike.

As the visitors pushed for a late equalizer, Hibs put the result beyond doubt with the final action of the match. Deep into stoppage time, Dean Cleland was found in the area and lashed a powerful finish into the net to clinch the points.

The result provides a strong foundation for the Academy side as they look to progress in the competition, with Jimenez expected to return to the squad once he recovers from illness.

Insley strikes gold as Harbour Swim Club conclude Edmonton campaign in style

Rhys Insley has capped off a remarkable weekend of competition at the JP Fiset Invitational in Edmonton, securing a clinical victory on the final day to bolster Harbour Swim Club’s impressive medal haul.

Competing in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke A Final, Insley demonstrated the exceptional form that has defined his meet. He dominated the field to touch the wall in a sharp 1:04.64, a performance that comfortably earned him the Gold Medal and further cemented his reputation as a rising force in the breaststroke events.

The victory provided a fitting finale for the Harbour duo in Canada. Insley’s final-day triumph brought the combined medal tally for himself and teammate Sam Williamson to an impressive total of six across the Invitational. The pair’s consistent presence on the podium highlights a successful international outing for the club as they continue to make their mark on the competitive North American circuit.

With several high-level performances now under his belt, Insley returns from Edmonton as one of the standout performers of the meet, providing plenty of optimism for the remainder of the season.

New champion guaranteed as top prospects head to Turtle Hill

The 38th Fecchio Junior Cup tees off this Thursday at Turtle Hill Golf Club, with the certain knowledge that a new name will be etched onto the trophy. Defending champion Oliver Betschart is set to miss the event due to a family vacation, leaving the field wide open for the island’s rising stars.

A competitive 43-player field has been assembled, split across five divisions tailored to age and handicap. The premier Blue Division features 17 championship-level players aged 15 and over, while the White and Red divisions will also compete in 36-hole stroke play. For those newer to the tournament circuit, the Gold and Yellow divisions will battle it out using the Stableford format.

Several names stand out in the hunt for the title:

  • Camilo Legere: The 2023 champion returns looking to reclaim his crown.
  • Arman Newton: Arrives in high confidence following his recent Tucker’s Point Club Championship win.
  • Johnny Bart: A course specialist who topped the leaderboard at Turtle Hill just last month.
  • Sa-Qui Robinson: Returns to local action after a term at the Mike Bender Golf Academy in Orlando.
  • Lewis MacFarlane: Despite being just 12, he is playing up a division; his 4.6 handicap suggests his short game could be lethal on the par-3 layout.

The action gets underway on Thursday, December 18th, with the final round concluded on Friday.

UK will rejoin EU’s Erasmus+ student exchange scheme

The UK contribution for the 2027/28 academic year will be 570 million pounds ($760 million)

International News via Reuters:

Britain and the European Union agreed on Wednesday to allow UK students to rejoin the bloc’s popular student exchange programme Erasmus+, a small but symbolic sign of improved relations after Brexit.

The UK contribution for the 2027/28 academic year will be 570 million pounds ($760 million), the British government said, adding that the deal included a 30% discount compared to the default terms under the current trade deal with the EU.

The two sides have also agreed to start negotiations on electricity market integration, and have set a deadline to finalise a food and drink trade deal and carbon markets linkage next year, the statement said.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sought closer ties with the EU since he was elected last year and he hailed a “new era” in the relationship in May when the two sides agreed the most significant reset of defence and trade ties since the country’s departure from the bloc in 2020.

Starmer has sought to distinguish his approach from the often tense relations between previous Conservative governments and the EU during the Brexit negotiations.

“Today’s agreements prove that our new partnership with the EU is working,” EU Relations Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said, calling the Erasmus+ deal “a huge win for our young people”.

“We have focused on the public’s priorities and secured a deal that puts opportunity first,” he said.

More than 100,000 people in the UK could benefit from the scheme in the first year, the government said.

The UK’s return to the Erasmus+ scheme, which allows hundreds of thousands of EU students each year to study in another country in the bloc for up to a year, has long been a key EU demand for strengthening ties between the two sides.

Britain previously left the programme following Brexit.
