Disney says Kimmel will return to the air Tuesday, six days after suspension

This marked the highest-profile move from the private sector to challenge a string of efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to crack down on his perceived media critics

International News via Reuters:

Disney said “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will return to its ABC network lineup on Tuesday, six days after it suspended the talk-show host following threats by the Federal Communications Commission chairman over comments the host had made about Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer.

This marked the highest-profile move from the private sector to challenge a string of efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to crack down on his perceived media critics through litigation and threats of regulatory action.

In announcing the decision, ABC’s parent company said it had suspended production of the late-night comedy show “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” Disney said the company felt some of Kimmel’s comments in question “were ill-timed and thus insensitive.”

After further discussions with Kimmel, “we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday,” Disney said.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, Disney Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden and Kimmel were in talks over the weekend and reached a decision on Monday to return Kimmel to the air, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The decision was guided by what was in the entertainment company’s best interest, rather than external pressure from station owners or the FCC, the sources said.

Kimmel is expected to address the issue when his show returns on Tuesday, according to the sources.

A spokeswoman for Kimmel could not immediately be reached for comment.

Trump, who has repeatedly pressured broadcasters to stop airing content that he has found objectionable, had celebrated the news of Kimmel’s suspension and referred to it erroneously as an outright cancellation of the show.

Kimmel, who has frequently targeted Trump in his show, drew fire for remarks he made last Monday about the September 10 assassination of Kirk, who was gunned down while addressing a crowd of 3,000 people on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem.

Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative political activist and podcast host, had been credited for building support for Trump and the Republican Party among young voters in 2024.

A 22-year-old technical school student from Utah has been charged with his murder, and the precise motive for the killing remains unclear.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has used his office and the courts to attack unflattering speech about him that he has called defamatory or false.

Throughout both his terms, Trump has threatened to rescind licenses for local broadcast affiliates of the national networks. The licenses are approved by the Federal Communications Commission, a nominally independent regulatory body.

Disney’s move signals the first big push back against the Trump administration by big media.

Disney shares closed down 1%.

ABC suspended Kimmel’s show on Wednesday after Carr threatened investigations and regulatory action against licensed broadcasters who aired Kimmel. The owners of dozens of local TV stations affiliated with ABC said they would no longer carry the show, including Nexstar, which needs FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna.

On Friday, Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz, a Republican, said Carr’s threat was dangerous.

Weekend policing plan yields results

BPS image

Police press release:

Under the direction of Acting Chief Inspector Anthony Smith of the Tactical Operations Division, of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS),  executed a comprehensive weekend policing plan designed to ensure public safety and uphold the law.

During the course of operations, the BPS executed multiple firearm and misuse of drug warrants, one of which resulted in the already reported arrest of a 19-year-old male suspect for the murder of Janae Minors and the attempted murder of an 18-year-old male. Officers also issued a substantial number of moving violation tickets and effected several arrests.

Among those arrested were persons found carrying knives without lawful excuse in public places.

Bladed Article Offences:

Around 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Police Officers were traveling west along east Broadway when they observed a motorcycle traveling in the same direction at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the vehicle and caused it to stop on Frog Lane, near the junction with Devon lane, Pembroke.

An officer informed the rider, a 25-year-old female, that she was stopped due to her manner of riding. Checks showed she had outstanding warrants, for which she was subsequently arrested.

A search of the motorcycle she was riding, led to the recovery of a knife from under the seat. The subject was further arrested for possession of a knife in a public place and transported to Hamilton Police Station (HPS).

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, officers were conducting 315f checks on Parsons Road, near the junction with Fenton’s Drive, when they stopped a motorcycle being ridden by a 19-year-old male who admitted having a knife under the bike’s seat. The knife was seized. The man was arrested and transported to HPS.

DUI Offence:

A 24-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. He was further arrested on active warrant.

All arrested individuals will be appearing before the courts in due course.

Stop and Search:

The public are reminded, if you wish to avoid being inconvenienced during stop and search operations, you must ensure that all documents required for legally operating a vehicle on the island’s roads, are in order.

Members of the public are further urged to comply with officers while they are carrying out their lawful duties and not to interfere with police operations.

Court Street cannot be a ‘hunting ground’

Police boost visibility just as area MP cites local frustration over a missing “sense of urgency”

Daily police foot patrols in North Hamilton, along with an armed response vehicle stationed on Court Street.

This is the new directive of Police Commissioner Darrin Simons, in an effort to increase police visibility in an area rocked by three shooting murders in just over a month.

This comes just as area MP Jason Hayward relayed the frustration of residents and businesses – who want to feel safer in the “heart of the city”.

The area cannot be a hunting ground for killers, he told Gary Foster Skelton today. (WATCH above)

A Police Spokesperson subsequently told Bermuda Broadcasting that the Commissioner of Police has given directions for increased police presence in the North Hamilton area, with a particular focus on Court Street.

The spokesperson continued, “Dedicated officers, along with the Parish Constables Unit, are now conducting daily foot patrols, supported by an Armed Response Vehicle that will be visibly stationed at various points along Court Street at intervals.”

“Officers are not only maintaining a high-visibility and reassuring presence, but are also actively engaging with community members and delivering proactive, community-focused policing.”

Police operations in the area will be directly overseen by the Central Area’s new Officer-in-Charge, Chief Inspector Mark Tomlinson, who assumed the role in August following the retirement of Chief Inspector Darren Glasford.

Nvidia to invest $100 billion in OpenAI as AI datacenter competition intensifies

The deal, which will see Nvidia start delivering chips as soon as late 2026, will involve two separate but intertwined transactions

International News via Reuters:

Chipmaker Nvidia will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and provide it with data center chips, the companies said on Monday, a tie-up between two of the highest-profile leaders in the global artificial intelligence race.

The deal, which will see Nvidia start delivering chips as soon as late 2026, will involve two separate but intertwined transactions, according to a person close to OpenAI.

The startup will pay Nvidia in cash for chips, and Nvidia will invest in OpenAI for non-controlling shares, the person said.

The first $10 billion of Nvidia’s investment in OpenAI, which was most recently valued at $500 billion, will begin when the two companies reach a definitive agreement for OpenAI to purchase Nvidia chips

Nvidia did not respond to immediate requests for clarification about the deal. The pact is among a spate of agreements between major technology players that includes years of investment in OpenAI from Microsoft and a deal last week between Nvidia and Intel to collaborate on AI chips.

The two companies signed a letter of intent for a landmark strategic partnership to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia chips for OpenAI’s AI infrastructure.

They aim to finalize partnership details in the coming weeks, with the first deployment phase targeted to come online in the second half of 2026.

“Everything starts with compute,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement.

“Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”

Nvidia shares were up 4.4% while shares of Oracle, which partners with OpenAI, SoftBank and Microsoft on the $500 billion Stargate AI data center project, gained nearly 5%.

Nvidia’s investment comes days after it committed $5 billion to struggling chipmaker Intel.

OpenAI and its backer, Microsoft, also announced earlier this month that they have signed a non-binding deal for new relationship terms that would allow for OpenAI’s restructuring into a for-profit company.

Nvidia also backed OpenAI in a $6.6 billion funding round in October 2024. However, the world’s most valuable firm making another sizeable investment in OpenAI could lead to antitrust scrutiny.

The Trump administration has taken a much lighter touch on competition issues compared with former President Joe Biden’s antitrust enforcers.

In June 2024 the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission reached a deal that cleared the way for potential antitrust investigations into the dominant roles that Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry.

New York eyes record Climate Week despite Trump attacks on green agenda

Almost no one had expected this response in a year that has seen the event’s host country – and the world’s wealthiest – set to a climate-denying agenda

International News via Reuters:

When Climate Week kicks off on Sunday in New York City, it will mark the event’s biggest year yet – with organizers reporting a record number of companies participating and more events than ever to attend.

Almost no one had expected this response in a year that has seen the event’s host country – and the world’s wealthiest – set to a climate-denying agenda of boosting fossil fuels, rolling back pollution regulation and defunding U.S. science and climate action.

Organizers of Climate Week even wondered, “Would people show up?” said Climate Group Chief Executive Officer Helen Clarkson.

“Actually, there’s huge enthusiasm for it,” Clarkson said.

Held alongside the U.N. General Assembly since 2009, this year’s Climate Week showcases more than 1,000 events – including presentations, panel discussions and swanky cocktail parties – hosted by environmental nonprofits, companies and philanthropists hoping to generate deals and discussion around protecting the planet.

Last year’s Climate Week, by comparison, saw about 900 events.

The boost in engagement has come “precisely as an antidote to the current U.S. administration’s attitude toward climate change,” former U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres told Reuters in an interview.

Ten years ago, Figueres helped to craft the 2015 Paris Treaty under which countries agreed to hold the global temperatures to within 2 degrees Celsius of the preindustrial average while aiming for a more ambitious target of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

But while national governments were pushing the climate agenda 10 years ago, Figueres said, the situation has since drastically changed.

“The pull now is coming from stakeholders, from the real economy, from market forces that are pulling forward,” Figueres said.

The Swiss carbon capture firm Climeworks has booked itself for nearly four times the number of events this year compared with last year, after the company in February raised $162 million toward improving its technology and growing the company, Co-Chief Executive Christoph Gebald said.

“We’re continuing to see demand increase for carbon removals,” Gebald said. For Climate Week, “the level of interest from the most senior levels of companies is higher than ever.”

Many major fossil fuel companies and some oil-dependent governments, however, have made moves toward reversing previous climate commitments.

A DIFFERENT WORLD

With the U.N. General Assembly meeting at the same time, Climate Week has developed into a major networking opportunity for CEOs and investors to rub elbows with visiting world leaders.

The Assembly will take up the climate change issue on Wednesday, when Secretary-General Antonio Guterrez hosts a special “climate summit.” Many leaders are expected to announce new climate targets, or Nationally Determined Contributions.

Neither the U.S. nor the European Union will be among them, despite having acted as leaders of the global climate agenda in the past. Instead, China, COP30 host Brazil and other fast-developing nations have taken a more active role in setting the agenda.

China’s emissions-reduction plan could also be announced any day but may underwhelm on ambition, climate sources said.

Meanwhile, the European Union is still struggling to reach agreement about how ambitious those targets should be – raising tensions about whether Brazil’s COP30 summit starting in only seven weeks will succeed.

“Historically, Europe has been in the front, both when it comes to taking ambitious targets … also on the financial side of the international agreements,” Danish climate minister Lars Aagaard said. But “Europe’s role in the world has changed. We are 6% of global emissions. So therefore, there is also a call from our side that all parties to the Paris Agreement also should lift their responsibility.”

The region is nevertheless seeing fast progress in its energy transition, with the EU projecting a 54% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from 1990 levels – meaning member countries are nearly on track for the EU’s previous 55% target for 2030.

With leaders at November’s COP30 set to focus on boosting implementation of promises made in the past, experts say companies need to be in the conversation now.

More than half of the world’s biggest companies have pledged to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century, in line with the world’s climate goal, according to data from the non-profit Net-Zero Tracker.

But according to an analysis by the TPI Global Climate Transition Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science, a whopping 98% of companies have shared no plans for aligning their spending with those commitments.

“The challenge for New York Climate Week and beyond is to ensure that individuals and institutions come together in new ways to reimagine how we can cooperate against common threats,” said Rajiv Shah, president of The Rockefeller Foundation.

A survey released on Thursday by the foundation that questioned 36,348 people worldwide estimated that most of the world’s population – a full 86% – believed international cooperation was crucial for climate action.

Netflix signs co-marketing deal with AB InBev to promote TV shows and beer

The partnership will include campaigns tied to Netflix’s shows such as UK drama “The Gentlemen” and South Korea’s “Culinary Class Wars”

International News via Reuters:

Netflix and Anheuser-Busch InBev have signed a global co-marketing deal to promote the streaming platform’s most-watched titles and the brewer’s beers, the companies said on Monday.

The partnership will include campaigns tied to Netflix’s shows such as UK drama “The Gentlemen” and South Korea’s “Culinary Class Wars,” as well as limited-edition packaging and digital promotions.

The companies have not disclosed the financial details of the partnership.

AB Inbev, which makes Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona beers, will advertise on Netflix’s live shows such as the NFL’s Christmas Day broadcast and collaborate on marquee events including the 2027 Women’s World Cup soccer tournament.

Netflix’s growing push into live sports has given the platform new opportunities to attract sponsorship and advertising from global brands seeking large viewership.

The agreement comes as Netflix’s advertising business now reaches more than 94 million users globally, roughly two years after launch. While still in the early phases, the ad tier is increasingly seen as a potential growth engine for the streaming platform.

“Streaming is a social and shared experience — it’s an occasion where beer and entertainment come together,” said Marcel Marcondes, Global Chief Marketing Officer of AB InBev.

Tackling gun violence ‘no longer business as usual’

Governor Andrew Murdoch recently concluded a Governor’s Council on gun violence listing several key actions taken to address the perennial problem

It’s no longer business as usual when it comes to tackling gun violence.

Public consultation launched on private roads act

The consultation starts today ending on 22 October

Full press release from the Government of Bermuda:

The Ministry of Public works and Environment is inviting members of the public to share their views on proposals to modernise Bermuda’s laws governing improvements to private roads.

The consultation launches today, 22 September, on the Government’s online consultation platform, forum.gov.bm, and will remain open until 22 October.

Residents are encouraged to visit the page, review the proposals, and complete the survey provided. Feedback from the survey will help inform Government decisions as it considers updates to the relevant legislation.

The proposals seek to update the Private Roads (Improvement) Act 1969 and the Private Roads (Lighting) Act 1984 so that the Government can, where appropriate, install street lighting, place safety mirrors at blind corners, introduce traffic-calming measures, repair retaining walls, and pave unsealed roads on private lanes when public safety or access is at risk.

The proposals also aim to simplify the current approval and cost-sharing process, which many residents have found overly complex.

Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams JP, MP, said the consultation is an essential step in delivering on the Government’s commitment, first outlined in the 2025 Throne Speech, to make private roads safer and more accessible.

“Bermudians have long raised concerns about deteriorating conditions on private roads and the difficulty of making necessary improvements. Too often, safety upgrades are delayed by outdated processes and complex requirements,” Minister Adams said.

“We want to ensure that the Government can respond more effectively, especially where public safety is at risk, while still valuing community input. This consultation gives every resident the opportunity to shape how these laws should evolve.”

The Minister added, “The aim is not simply to repair roads but to create a framework that balances fairness, safety, and practicality. I encourage everyone

to take part by reading the consultation material and submitting their feedback through the online survey.”

Through this consultation, the Ministry hopes to hear views on how best to balance community contributions with the need for timely action, as well as suggestions on the range of safety improvements that should be prioritised.

Residents have until 22 October to contribute their views. All responses will be carefully considered as the Ministry prepares recommendations for updating the Private Roads (Improvement) Act 1969 and the Private Roads (Lighting) Act 1984.

Poland reports bird flu outbreak on farms in north, WOAH says

The virus was detected on a goose farm and a turkey farm in the town of Susz

International News via Reuters:

Poland has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu on two poultry farms in the north of the country, the World Organisation for Animal Health said on Monday, as Europe faces a seasonal upturn in the deadly disease.

The virus was detected on a goose farm and a turkey farm in the town of Susz, and killed around 4,000 birds, the Paris-based WOAH said, citing a report from the Polish authorities.

Poland last week signed an agreement with China with the aim of restarting poultry trade halted since a previous wave of bird flu in the past year.

Government updates public benefit entity policy

Minister for Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward called the new pubic benefit entity policy “a milestone” for Bermuda’s corporate framework

Full press release from the Government of Bermuda:

The Ministry of Economy and Labour is pleased to introduce the document, Bermuda’s New Benefit Entity, a legal framework for public benefit entities that strengthens the island’s position as an innovative and responsible business jurisdiction.

Amendments to the Companies Act 1981, the Limited Liability Company Act 2016, and the Limited Partnership Act 1883 will establish a new type of legal entity, known as a Benefit Entity, allowing for-profit businesses to incorporate public benefits into their decision-making and operations.

Benefit companies, benefit limited liability companies, and benefit limited partnerships will now be able to balance profitability with the pursuit of positive social and environmental outcomes. These outcomes may include contributions to education, health, science, the arts, sports, community development, and other areas.

Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward explained, “The introduction of Benefit Entities is a milestone in Bermuda’s corporate framework. It enables businesses to align their profit-making activities with broader goals that positively impact society and the environment, reinforcing Bermuda’s reputation as a forward-thinking jurisdiction.”

Key features of the framework include:

  • Optional participation: Companies, LLCs, or partnerships may choose to become a benefit entity.
  • Flexibility: Existing businesses can convert, or new ones can be formed as benefit entities.
  • Public benefit focus: Entities may specify positive impacts they aim to achieve, though not required.
  • Accountability: Annual statements will demonstrate how benefit entities operate responsibly and sustainably.

By providing this flexible structure, Bermuda aims to attract socially conscious companies, family offices, and investors who want to integrate sustainable business practices with financial success.

The public is encouraged to read Bermuda’s New Benefit Entity document at www.gov.bm to learn more.
