Statement by Craig Cannonier, Shadow Minister of Transport
“The recent concerns raised about inadequate Sunday and public holiday bus services to Dockyard highlight a genuine problem for people who depend on public transportation to get to work.
“The Ministry of Transport has indicated that ridership and operational assessments do not justify additional services. However, the public deserves to understand how that conclusion was reached.”
Mr Cannonier continues.
“I am asking the Minister to clarify: What research and passenger data were used to determine that additional services are not warranted? Which employers, shift workers and organisations in Dockyard were consulted? Has the Department of Public Transportation ever trialled earlier or later Sunday and holiday services to establish actual demand?
“We cannot simply assume there is no demand when the service people need is not available.”
He reiterates: “Public transportation must serve working Bermudians, not just the busiest travel periods. I look forward to the Minister addressing these questions in a statement to the House of Assembly next week, so that the public can better understand the evidence behind the decision and whether practical alternatives have been considered.”
