Glencore rejects US listing in boost for UK markets

The London-listed miner said on Wednesday that a move across the Atlantic would not increase value for shareholders

International News via Reuters:

Glencore will keep its primary listing in London, rejecting a move to the United States for now in a rare win for the city’s markets, which have been shrinking due to a dearth of new share issues.

The London-listed miner said on Wednesday that a move across the Atlantic would not increase value for shareholders. In February, it said it might switch its main listing from London, and CEO Gary Nagle said New York was being considered.

Nagle said on Wednesday that the company had extensively researched a move to the major exchanges around the world.

“A move in our primary listing … would not be value accretive for Glencore at this stage, having done that thorough analysis, and therefore we keep it on a watching brief, but will remain listed in London for the moment,” he said.

The decision is a boost for UK capital markets after years of few initial public offerings and depressed valuations leading to a string of takeovers of public companies. That has led London’s equity markets to shrink as some companies seek higher valuations elsewhere, prompting a suite of listing reforms.

High-profile companies to recently announce their departure from London include travel giant TUI and Netherlands-based food delivery company Just Eat Takeaway.com. BHP Group, the world’s largest miner, also ended its dual listing in favour of Sydney in 2022.

Britain’s reforms to try to attract more companies include reducing shareholder votes on certain transactions, and easing the prospectus requirements for companies listing shares.

Asked about Glencore’s decision, Antonio Simoes, CEO at Britain’s largest investor Legal & General, said he saw pent-up demand to invest in Britain from international clients, including in London-listed companies, but that the government needed to press ahead with reforms to boost economic growth.

“The more we get the country growing, the stock market will be a reflection of that,” he said. “We just want to see those reforms coming through, so that there’s more capital investing in the UK.”

Some companies could still shift London listings, including publisher Pearson, which is under shareholder pressure to do so, and oil major Shell, which is considering a move to the U.S. to address a valuation gap with rivals there.

Glencore’s shares have fallen 26% in the last year, prompting analysts to suggest the company might get a boost by a relisting in New York. However, Nagle said on Wednesday that decline was due at least in part to lower coal prices

He added that the company believed it was unlikely to have been included in U.S. benchmark S&P 500 index – a point that London and other European exchanges have stressed in their campaigns to try to convince companies to list with them.

“A U.S. listing is perceived to offer access to deeper pools of capital and higher valuations in certain sectors but these are often illusory, and it also comes with significant regulatory burden, litigation risk, and increased disclosure requirements as well as big challenges in gaining index inclusion,” said Michael Jacobs, corporate partner at law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer.

Still, some investors were disappointed with Glencore’s decision, with some analysts citing it as a reason for a 4% drop in its shares on Wednesday.

Shares gain around the world, yields edge up

U.S. economic data is one major focus for markets, and Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday

International News via Reuters:

World shares gained on Wednesday as traders bought the dip after recent falls on soft U.S. data and corporate warnings about tariffs, while benchmark U.S. Treasury yields edged up from one month lows.

Europe’s broad STOXX 600 index rose 0.2%, after most Asian benchmarks had risen earlier in the day, while S&P 500 futures were 0.3% higher.

U.S. economic data is one major focus for markets, and Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday after data showed services sector activity unexpectedly flatlined in July.

That reinforced the message from Friday’s soft jobs data, which caused markets to significantly increase bets on the Federal Reserve cutting rates in September.

“There’s this tug of war going on between the more concrete signs that we have seen that the U.S. economy is slowing and the fact that rate cuts are coming which removes some of the pressure on valuations,” said Samy Chaar, chief economist at Lombard Odier.

At least for equity investors, the latter view was in the ascendancy on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, on tariffs Chaar said investors were taking comfort from the fact that at least part of the trade war is settling down, though there could be some complacency there.

“The market is more focused on the fact that we’re not getting maximalist tariffs, but I wonder if it isn’t focusing enough on the fact that we are still getting something moderate, and more could be coming, pharmaceuticals for example.”

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would announce tariffs on semiconductors and chips in the next week or so, while the U.S. would initially impose a “small tariff” on pharmaceutical imports before increasing it substantially in a year or two.

He also said the U.S. was close to a trade deal with China and that he would meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping before the end of the year if an agreement was struck. However, he threatened to further raise tariffs on goods from India over its Russian oil purchases.

Tech and semiconductors were also a theme of the day regardless of tariffs. Shares of AI server maker Super Micro fell 17.2% in premarket trading after it missed fourth-quarter estimates, while chip firm Advanced Micro Devices dropped 5.5%.

Chip foundry giant TSMC shares fell 2%.

In the government bond market, Treasury yields edged up after a $58 billion auction of three-year notes went poorly, but still hovered near multi-month lows. More supply will hit the market this week, with $42 billion in 10-year notes on Wednesday and $25 billion in 30-year bonds on Thursday. [US/]

Two-year Treasury yields rose 1 basis point to 3.742%, having risen 3.5 bps overnight, while benchmark 10-year yields ticked up 4 bps to 4.239%.

Fed funds futures imply a 94% chance of a rate cut next month, with at least two cuts priced in for this year, according to the CME’s FedWatch.

Investors are waiting for Trump’s pick to fill a coming vacancy on the Fed Board of Governors. Trump said the decision will be made soon, while ruling out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as a contender to replace current chief Jerome Powell, whose term ends in May 2026.

With European yields moving in line with Treasuries, currency markets were quiet. The euro and sterling were both flat against the dollar at $1.1579, and $1.3288 respectively. [FRX/]

Oil prices rose after four straight sessions of declines. U.S. crude was up 1.44% to $66.1 per barrel, while Brent was at $68.7, up 1.6%. [O/R]

Trump said on Tuesday he will decide on whether to sanction countries that purchase Russian oil after a meeting with Russian officials scheduled for Wednesday.

Spot gold prices slipped 0.4% to $3,365 an ounce.

Hayward tells BELCO to reduce emissions

Pembroke MP Jason Hayward is ‘standing in solidarity’ with the power station’s neighbours

Find a solution to BELCO emissions – and find it fast.

Area MP Jason Hayward this week stating his support of Pembroke residents whose properties are in the pollution zone around the North Power Station.

Residents sent BELCO and the MP series of photos showing black deposits and brown smears in June and July, and cited fumes that sometimes make it difficult to go outside.

Jason Hayward, also Minister of Economy & Labour, said via a press statement that he is “deeply concerned by the ongoing environmental disturbances affecting our community”.

He continues, “I stand in solidarity with the residents who have voiced their frustrations and urge BELCO to accelerate the implementation of a long-term solution that eliminates these harmful emissions.

“Environmental justice is not optional—it is a fundamental right… I encourage all residents to remain vocal and vigilant”.

MP Hayward also calls on BELCO to engage more frequently and transparently with residents, to restore and clean damaged properties, and guarantee access to clean drinking water.

Issues with fallout and emissions have been ongoing since the North Power Station came online in 2020.

BELCO president Wayne Caines previously said this is because the new engines were “optimised” for liquid natural gas – a fuel source that has never been permitted in Bermuda, and prohibited by the Regulatory Authority in the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan.

BELCO submitted its proposal for the next IRP last October, including some scenarios with LNG. The RA recently advised that there will be more public consultation on alternative energy proposals, and further analysis, before a final IRP is published.

All the same, in a letter to MP Hayward dated July 1st this year, BELCO’s Nadir Wade cited multiple steps they have taken to mitigate pollution from the NPS – including starting up engines with cleaner fuel, installing odour filters, and reducing the size of emission particles.

Despite this, some area residents continue to feel that there has been no significant change to fallout or emissions.

Mr Wade’s letter cited independent tests that show the drinking water and air quality meeting the standards of the World Health Organization and United States Environmental Protection Agency.

He also said BELCO’s location has been industrially zoned for more than a century, and cited the unique challenge of operating where residential areas have “developed around our
pre-existing industrial operations over the decades”.

Responding to Bermuda Broadcasting today, Mr Wade said BELCO takes the concerns of neighbouring residents seriously, and in July they painted roofs, washed cars and power-washed properties following reports that 15 homes had been impacted by emissions.

Mr Wade continues, quote: “We will continue to listen, take action to improve our operations and mitigate any impacts. If any property owner believes they have been impacted by BELCO operations, they should contact the OHSE team by visiting the website belco.bm or calling 295-5111.”

Press Statement by Pembroke Central MP, Jason Hayward

As the elected representative for the people of Pembroke Central, I am deeply concerned by the ongoing environmental disturbances affecting our community, particularly those stemming from emissions and soot deposits believed to be originating from BELCO operations.
On the dates of July 20, 21 and 22, 2025, residents reported a significant accumulation of soot on their properties, this is in addition to reported incidents in June. These recurring incidents are not only disruptive but also distressing, as they compromise the cleanliness of homes and the well-being of families.
I stand in solidarity with the residents who have voiced their frustrations and urge BELCO to accelerate the implementation of a long-term solution that eliminates these harmful emissions. The health and safety of our community must be prioritized without delay.
Furthermore, I call on BELCO to:
• Engage more transparently and frequently with affected residents, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.
• Restore damaged property and provide support for cleaning efforts where soot accumulation has occurred.
• Guarantee access to clean drinking water and take proactive steps to prevent any contamination risks.
Environmental justice is not optional—it is a fundamental right. I will continue to advocate for accountability and action, and I encourage all residents to remain vocal and vigilant, so that we ensure our community remains a safe and healthy place to live.

BELCO response from Managing Director, Nadir Wade

“Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (“BELCO”) has been serving Bermuda reliably for over 119 years and continues to support approximately 36,000 customers island wide.

As Bermuda’s electricity provider, we recognise that our operations may impact the lives of residents living next to land that is zoned for industrial operations. In July BELCO was notified that 15 homes experienced impacts related to emissions. We responded swiftly to mitigate those impacted customers including painting roofs, washing cars, and power-washing properties. We’ve been working over the past several years to balance providing Bermuda with reliable electricity production while being better neighbours. The concerns of our immediate neigbours are understandable, and we continue to take them very seriously.

Since the commissioning of the North Power Station, we have actively communicated with nearby residents, including the Bermuda Clean Air Coalition. We engage in regular walkabouts and direct meetings, including participating twice in Constituency 17’s Saturday morning clinics to discuss residents’ concerns, and send letters to the community as recently as last week.  We are committed to transparency and responsiveness and want our neighbours to know that remediation efforts are in place and ongoing.

Bermuda’s long‑term energy strategy contemplates electricity production from alternative fuel sources as a transition away from Bermuda’s reliance on heavy fuel oil to produce electricity on island. Any transition to an alternative fuel source would aim to reduce emissions and soot fallout.

Our phased mitigation efforts—which include technical upgrades to engines, odour control enhancements, filtration improvements, and operational adjustments—have resulted in significant reductions in fallout and odour incidents. These efforts are ongoing and are being optimised continuously.

BELCO’s management and Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (OHSE) teams engage in open dialogue with neighbours and are responsive to their concerns. The Company also remediates any impacts on neighbouring properties as quickly as possible.

Detailed information and progress updates are accessible via our website. We will continue to listen, take action to improve our operations and mitigate any impacts.

If any property owner believes they have been impacted by BELCO operations, they should contact the OHSE team by visiting the website belco.bm or calling 295-5111.”

US proposes new drone rules that could lead to Starbucks, Amazon deliveries

Under current rules, operators need to get individual waivers or exemptions to use drones without visual line of sight

International News via Reuters:

The U.S. Transportation Department is proposing new rules to speed deployment of drones beyond the visual line of sight of operators, a key change needed to advance commercial uses like package deliveries.

“We are going to unleash American drone dominance,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Under current rules, operators need to get individual waivers or exemptions to use drones without visual line of sight. The department said eliminating those requirements “will significantly expand the use-case for drone technologies in areas like: manufacturing, farming, energy production, filmmaking, and the movement of products including lifesaving medications.”

The proposal includes new requirements for manufacturers, operators, and drone traffic-management services to keep drones safely separated from other drones and airplanes.

“It’s going to change the way that people and products move throughout our airspace… so you may change the way you get your Amazon package, you may get a Starbucks cup of coffee from a drone,” Duffy said.

“Industry needs this rule to make sure they can use this technology that’s going to allow them to do business more efficiently and effectively.”

Amazon resumed testing drone deliveries earlier this year at two locations in Texas and Arizona. Amazon has a goal of delivering 500 million packages annually by drone by the end of 2030.

Under the proposal, operations would occur at or below 400 feet above ground from pre-designated locations approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Operators would identify boundaries and approximate

daily flights and takeoff, landing and loading areas and ensure procedures if communications with drones are lost.

Drones would yield to all manned aircraft

broadcasting their position and not interfere with operations at airports.

The Transportation Security Administration would require

flight coordinators and others to obtain security threat assessments and a fingerprint-based criminal history records check.

Lawmakers and many state officials have raised concerns about drones being used to target high-profile U.S. events like the FIFA World Cup.

Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International CEO Michael Robbins praised the risk-based proposal as “a critical step toward enabling drone operations that will enhance safety, transform commercial services, and strengthen public safety with drones as a force multiplier.”

Australia regulator says YouTube, others ‘turning a blind eye’ to child abuse material

The Australian government decided last week to include YouTube in its world-first social media ban for teenagers

International News via Reuters:

Australia’s internet watchdog has said the world’s biggest social media firms are still “turning a blind eye” to online child sex abuse material on their platforms, and said YouTube in particular had been unresponsive to its enquiries.

In a report released on Wednesday, the eSafety Commissioner said YouTube, along with Apple, failed to track the number of user reports it received of child sex abuse appearing on their platforms and also could not say how long it took them to respond to such reports.

The Australian government decided last week to include YouTube in its world-first social media ban for teenagers, following eSafety’s advice to overturn its planned exemption for the Alphabet-owned Google’s video-sharing site.

“When left to their own devices, these companies aren’t prioritising the protection of children and are seemingly turning a blind eye to crimes occurring on their services,” eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said in a statement.

“No other consumer-facing industry would be given the licence to operate by enabling such heinous crimes against children on their premises, or services.”

Google has said previously that abuse material has no place on its platforms and that it uses a range of industry-standard techniques to identify and remove such material. Meta – owner of Facebook, Instagram and Threads, three of the biggest platforms with more than 3 billion users worldwide – says it prohibits graphic videos.

The eSafety Commissioner, an office set up to protect internet users, has mandated Apple, Discord, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Skype, Snap and WhatsApp to report on the measures they take to address child exploitation and abuse material in Australia.

The report on their responses so far found a “range of safety deficiencies on their services which increases the risk that child sexual exploitation and abuse material and activity appear on the services”.

Safety gaps included failures to detect and prevent livestreaming of the material or block links to known child abuse material, as well as inadequate reporting mechanisms.

It said platforms were also not using “hash-matching” technology on all parts of their services to identify images of child sexual abuse by checking them against a database. Google has said before that its anti-abuse measures include hash-matching technology and artificial intelligence.

The Australian regulator said some providers had not made improvements to address these safety gaps on their services despite it putting them on notice in previous years.

“In the case of Apple services and Google’s YouTube, they didn’t even answer our questions about how many user reports they received about child sexual abuse on their services or details of how many trust and safety personnel Apple and Google have on-staff,” Inman Grant said.

Britain’s Sainsbury’s shakes up leadership team

Last month, Sainsbury’s reported better-than-expected first quarter sales

International News via Reuters:

Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Officer Simon Roberts has reshuffled the leadership team of Britain’s second-largest supermarket group after a key lieutenant quit to become the boss of homeware retailer Dunelm.

Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s chief retail and technology officer, resigned last month and will become Dunelm’s CEO in October. She had been seen by some analysts as a possible successor to Roberts, Sainsbury’s CEO since 2020.

Sainsbury’s, which with a UK grocery market share of 15% trails only Tesco, said on Tuesday that Tracey Clements will join the operating board next month with the newly created role of chief retail, logistics and supply officer. She previously worked for Tesco, drugstore chain Boots and oil major BP.

In other changes, Chief Marketing, Data and Sustainability officer Mark Given will take on responsibility for technology by becoming chief technology, marketing and data officer.

Chief Commercial Officer Rhian Bartlett will see her role expanded to take on sustainability, becoming chief commercial and sustainability officer with a remit to embed sustainability “at the heart of commercial decision making”.

Last month, Sainsbury’s reported better-than-expected first quarter sales, benefiting from warm weather and a disruption at rival Marks & Spencer. Its shares are up 8% so far this year.
