Full press release from the Government of Bermuda:

Recently, the Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, engaged with members of public service leadership to reaffirm Government’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and accountability.

The activity, which was facilitated in a town hall style format, took place following the passage of the 2025–2026 Budget.

And the meeting served as a critical touchpoint to reengage leadership around Government’s fiscal priorities, providing a forum for open dialogue and cross-sector collaboration.

The Public Service leadership, which included Permanent Secretaries and Directors, discussed the concrete steps necessary to ensure the budget’s effective execution, alignment with strategic goals, and measurable outcomes.

“This town hall was about more than reiterating numbers. It was about reinforcing our shared responsibility to deliver real results for the people of Bermuda,” said the Premier.

“Through collaboration and accountability, we are laying the foundation for a fairer, more stable, and more affordable Bermuda. These efforts are designed to create tangible improvements in the lives of our citizens, from better services and smarter spending, to a more responsive and people-focused public sector.”

The session was a platform to discuss how budget priorities such as tax relief measures, the newly implemented Corporate Income Tax and, investments in infrastructure and healthcare are all expected to directly benefit the public.

As Bermuda navigates a rapidly changing global environment, the Government remains committed to leading with integrity, holding itself accountable to its citizens, and preparing the island to meet both current and future challenges with confidence and resilience.

Bermuda Monetary Authority win design awards for new banknotes

The BMA earned numerous international accolades for their design and innovation strategies, according to the regulator

The full press release from the BMA:

Today the BMA announced it has received multiple international recognitions by earning the prestigious LEED® certification in green building design for BMA House, as well as two separate international awards for the design and innovative security features of Bermuda’s new two- and five-dollar banknotes. In addition to these accolades, both the LEED certification and the new polymer banknote initiative are milestone accomplishments in the BMA’s sustainability strategy.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a globally recognised symbol of excellence in green building. The LEED certification signifies that BMA House is operated and maintained to the highest level of sustainability —ensuring electricity cost savings, lower carbon emissions and healthier indoor environments. BMA House at 43 Victoria Street in Hamilton is now one of only a small handful of buildings in Bermuda that have secured the LEED certification.

The new five-dollar banknote was awarded the International Bank Note Society’s (IBNS) Bank Note of the Year for 2024 in recognition of its artistic merit and innovative security features, while the two- and five-dollar banknotes were together recognised with the High Security Printing Latin America Award for Best New Banknote for 2025, also in recognition of their security features.

“As a progressive financial services regulator, the BMA aims to excel and continuously improve in all that we do. We are honoured to receive these international recognitions for excellence in green building design and the outstanding design of the two- and five-dollar banknotes,” explained Craig Swan, the Authority’s CEO. “The BMA also places a high priority on helping to create a more sustainable future where everyone can thrive. We are proud to be able to provide our employees with a greener, healthier workplace and our community with more durable, environmentally sustainable banknotes.”

An international symbol of excellence, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. The BMA achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in several targeted areas, including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The upgrades for BMA House began in 2023 with a vision to improve the environmental and human health impacts of the building and help make the world a more sustainable, healthier place. There are nearly 197,166 registered and certified LEED projects worldwide in 186 countries and territories.

“LEED is a transformative tool that ensures a building is designed and operated to achieve high performance, improve human health and protect the environment,” said Peter Templeton, president and CEO, USGBC. “By prioritising sustainability, the BMA project is leading the way in Bermuda and helping USGBC continue towards our goal of green buildings for everyone within this generation.”

More on the two- and five-dollar banknotes and their awards

Issued in October 2024, the BMA’s five-dollar banknote was identified as a favourite from the onset of voting by International Bank Note Society’s (IBNS) members. The five-dollar banknote beat out more than 21 nominated banknotes from a pool of more than 100 issued worldwide to receive the International Bank Note Society’s ‘Bank Note of the Year’ for 2024 based on artistic merit and innovative security features. The innovative security features of both the two- and five-dollar banknotes were also cited as the leading factor for the High Security Printing Latin America Award for Best New Banknote for 2025.

The award-winning banknotes are printed by De La Rue on polymer substrate. This material increases the lifespan of the banknotes to two and a half times longer than the previous cotton notes due to increased durability and resistance to dirt and moisture, making them a more environmentally sustainable option. Both banknotes also feature tactile dots to increase accessibility for those with vision impairment.

Notable security features on both banknotes include: a highly reflective, mirror-like tuna printed on the front of the notes with a shadow of the fish visible on the back of the banknotes; a coloured tuna printed inside the substrate that becomes clearer when the note is held up to the light; a clear window that is fully and partially transparent that depicts a cloudy sky and an underwater scene, viewable from both sides; the abbreviation ‘BMA’ printed on the front and a hibiscus flower printed on the reverse, both of which become see-through when the note is held up to the light; a shimmering gold ink wave design with multiple fish and a sun, when the notes are tilted, other hidden elements that appear in two colours when the banknotes are illuminated with UV light; and a unique serial number, along with a printed ‘security thread’ with BMA microtext.

Press release:
CG Insurance proudly hosted its third annual CG Slow Race at the 2025 Motor Fest 2025, drawing crowds of onlookers to the Flagpole at the high-energy event. What started as a creative approach to promoting road safety has grown into a fan-favourite competition, combining rider skill, community spirit, and a meaningful message: safety over speed.
This year, the event featured the addition of an international exhibition round, bringing extra excitement and star power to the day. The round included superbike superstar and two-time Isle of Man TT winner Steve Plater, race team member Lawrence Ward, and Boston stunt rider Clutchup Corey, who also put on a thrilling performance for crowds in the Action Arena.
The main competition followed with the familiar multi-heat format, including a clutch bike race and automatic “Twist n Go” categories. The top riders from each segment advanced to the final showdown, a head-to-head test of precision on a 50 ft course, where the last rider to cross the finish line without putting a foot down claimed victory.
Shawn Bremar and Rowdy Crockwell-Laurent faced off in the final heat, with Shawn claiming first place through flawless control and composure. Meanwhile, Ajani Lovell earned third place as the runner-up in the automatic “Twist n Go” heat, securing a well-deserved podium finish. In recognition of his skill and safe riding, Shawn received a year’s worth of bike insurance from CG Insurance.
Naz Farrow, CEO of CG Insurance, reflected on the broader impact of the event, stating: “With road safety continuing to be a critical issue, the CG Slow Race is designed to inspire safer driving habits in a fun and engaging way. Our continued support reflects CG’s broader mission to protect the well-being of our community and promote responsible driving across Bermuda.”
As crowds grow and enthusiasm builds year after year, the CG Slow Race has become more than a competition. With strong community participation, growing international recognition, and momentum building every year, it has become a standout highlight of Motor Fest, delivering thrills, laughter, and a powerful message: slow and steady can truly win the race.

Mother pleads for justice in Fort Scaur double murder

One year after the fatal shooting of Razi Garland and Amon Robinson, police renew appeal for information; grieving mother urges community to speak up

A grieving mother has made a heartfelt plea to the community – urging anyone with information to come forward and help find justice for her son and godson, who were both fatally shot near Fort Scaur nearly one year ago.

Chyrstal-Lynn El spoke to the media today, as police renewed their appeal for answers in the double murder of 18-year-old Razi Garland and 19-year-old Amon Robinson.

She described the two as ambitious young men who had just started a landscaping business, saying they had “hopes, plans, and so much to give.”

Mr Garland and Mr Robinson were fatally shot just after 6 am on Wednesday, July 10th last year in the Scaur Hill area of Sandys.

To date, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case who remain under investigation and are currently out on police bail.

Meanwhile, Acting Detective Chief Inspector Kenten Trott renewed an appeal for information, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in helping to bring about justice.

OPEC+ may further accelerate oil output hikes on Saturday, sources say

Eight members of the group are scheduled to meet online on Saturday to decide their oil output policy for August

International News via Reuters:

OPEC+ may make an increase in oil output for August at its meeting on Saturday that is larger than the 411,000 barrels per day (bpd) hikes it made for May, June and July, three sources familiar with OPEC+ talks told Reuters.

Eight members of the group – Saudi Arabia, Russia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Kazakhstan and Algeria – are scheduled to meet online on Saturday to decide their oil output policy for August.

OPEC+ made a radical change in policy this year when the eight members started to unwind their most recent output cut of 2.2 million bpd starting in April. They then accelerated the hikes in May, June and July to 411,000 bpd for each month, despite the extra supply weighing on crude prices.

Earlier on Friday, other sources told Reuters the group was expected to agree to an increase of 411,000 bpd for August, which remains a possible outcome of Saturday’s meeting. All sources declined to be identified by name due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The acceleration of the output hikes came after some OPEC+ members, such as Kazakhstan, produced way over their targets, angering other members that were sticking more closely to agreed cuts.

Kazakh output returned to growth last month and matched an all-time high, as the Chevron-led Tengiz field ramped up, a source familiar with the data told Reuters this week.

OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies led by Russia, is looking to expand its market share against the backdrop of growing supplies from other producers like the United States.

The group pumps about half of the world’s oil. As of their decision for July output, the OPEC+ eight have made or announced production increases of 1.37 million bpd. This is 62% of the production cut of 2.2 million bpd that they are unwinding.

Exclusive-China signals investment in Brazil-led global forest fund, sources say

China’s commitment to the fund could pave the way for emerging economies to contribute to climate change mitigation

International News via Reuters:

China has signaled to the Brazilian government that it will invest in the Tropical Forests Forever Facility, a multilateral mechanism funding conservation of endangered forests around the world, two people with knowledge of negotiations told Reuters.

An investment by China in the fund, which Brazil first proposed in 2023, would signal an important shift in climate finance, which has relied on funding from wealthy nations most responsible for global warming to date.

China’s commitment to the fund could pave the way for emerging economies to contribute financially to climate change mitigation, moving beyond the mandatory requirements imposed on developed nations by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The new approach comes as wealthy nations such as the United States retreat from ambitious pledges to fund projects curbing climate change, despite growing pressure from poorer nations struggling to cope with the impacts of a warmer climate.

At last year’s United Nations climate summit, leaders of developing countries lambasted wealthy nations over their annual $300 billion global finance target, covering just a fraction of the $1.3 trillion that economists say is necessary.

Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo’an expressed the intention to contribute to the forests fund, known as TFFF, in a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Fernando Haddad on Thursday, sources said. They spoke on the sidelines of a meeting of finance ministers in the run-up to the BRICS summit of major developing nations that starts in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

“(Lan) told (Haddad) that he considered the fund idea important and that China would collaborate,” said one source, who witnessed the conversation, adding that the discussion did not involve specific values.

The Brazilian government has taken the message from China’s finance minister as a signal that Beijing will contribute funds, the sources said, although a public announcement is not expected until the U.N. climate summit, COP30, in November.

China’s embassy in Brasilia and Brazil’s Finance Ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had previously discussed the fund with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China in May, according to sources.

Brazil also aims to attract other resource-rich developing nations to the fund, particularly from the Middle East, the sources said.

The Brazilian government sees potential for the TFFF to be its main new deliverable at COP30, which it will host in the Amazonian city of Belem.

Policymakers have envisioned TFFF as a $125 billion fund, combining sovereign and private-sector contributions, to be managed like an endowment paying countries annual stipends based on how much of their tropical forests remain standing.

While sources do not expect the fund to launch at that scale, the idea received initial signs of support from the U.K., France, Germany, Norway, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

Early backing from the United States evaporated after President Donald Trump exited the Paris Agreement.

The interest in the TFFF underscores growing international attention on the preservation of tropical forests, rich in planet-warming carbon, as a powerful tool to combat climate change and stave off biodiversity loss.

Sterling heads for weekly loss as fiscal concerns loom

The pound was flat and last fetched $1.36, while against the euro it inched 0.1% lower and was last at 86.26 pence

International News via Reuters:

Sterling was poised for a weekly loss on Friday, marking a lacklustre end to a week that saw fiscal and political uncertainties rattle investor appetite for UK assets.

The pound was flat and last fetched $1.36, while against the euro it inched 0.1% lower and was last at 86.26 pence. Gilt yields were broadly steady in late morning trading.

However, on a weekly basis, cable was down 0.4% against the greenback, while it had fallen about 1% against the euro, marking its biggest one-week drop against the currency since U.S. tariffs on world economies took effect in early April.

UK stocks, bonds and cable witnessed a selloff earlier in the week, after the government’s welfare reforms were not well received by ruling Labour Party members and stirred speculation about the future of finance minister Rachel Reeves.

Some analysts even drew parallels between this week’s market reaction and the rout during former Prime Minister Liz Truss’ premiership in 2022.

With the Keir Starmer-led government completing one year in power, uncertainties prevail over the options it has to balance public accounts.

“There is speculation that given the difficulties the government has faced in finding savings from welfare budgets, tax rises are likely in the Autumn Budget,” said Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown.

“Bets are rising that the Bank of England will cut interest rates more quickly with a reduction in August increasingly on the cards. So, that’s kept a bit more downwards pressure on sterling.”

Traders expect the Bank of England to lower borrowing costs by 25 basis points next in September and are anticipating another interest rate cut by the same amount before the year ends, data compiled by LSEG showed.

Further, top ratings agency S&P said the inability of Britain’s government to make modest cuts to welfare spending this week underscores that it has very limited budgetary room to manoeuvre.

Despite the week’s developments, the pound is at a near four-year high against the dollar and is up about 9% so far this year, having benefited from broader dollar weakness and as a U.S.-UK trade deal offered some relief on the tariff front.

AirAsia strikes deal for up to 70 Airbus A321XLR jets as restructuring nears end

Malaysia-based AirAsia is one of Asia’s largest low-cost carriers and one of Airbus’ largest customers

International News via Reuters:

AirAsia on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to buy 50 long-range A321XLR planes with conversion rights for another 20 of the single-aisle jets, as the budget airline nears the end of a restructuring process.

Reuters reported last month that Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia owner Capital A Group, was in talks to buy 50 to 70 of the latest Airbus narrow-body model, which would include the ability to convert some of the airline’s large, existing Airbus order book into A321XLR orders.

Malaysia-based AirAsia is one of Asia’s largest low-cost carriers and one of Airbus’ largest customers, with around 360 planes on order.

Fernandes said the airline intends to order another 150 jets within a month, which would complete the carrier’s fleet strategy for the time being.

Fernandes did not say which models would be ordered, but confirmed that AirAsia remains in previously reported talks for a potentially large order of smaller planes, either the Airbus A220 or Embraer E2 regional jet.

Capital A, hard hit by pandemic travel restrictions, was classified by Malaysia’s stock exchange as financially distressed in 2022. Fernandes hopes to exit this so-called PN17 status soon, he said.

Capital A is in the process of selling its AirAsia aviation business to long-haul unit AirAsia X to consolidate long and short-haul operations under a single AirAsia brand.

After this disposal takes place, Capital A should exit PN17 status, Fernandes said.

The expanded and standalone AirAsia, which will remain listed in Malaysia, intends to issue its first bond in October and two credit agencies are looking to rate the company, he said.

LOW-COST NETWORK CARRIER

AirAsia, which has a current fleet of 255, has been restructuring its plane order book after it faced financial difficulties during COVID-19.

Like most budget airlines it mostly operates economy-only narrow-body planes. Fernandes said he was negotiating with Airbus about what to do with an historical order for 15 A330 wide-bodies but that he had not yet cancelled any.

Fernandes wants to expand AirAsia flights to North America and Europe, but still at budget prices. Airbus’ long-range narrow-body models are key to that vision, he says.

But single-aisle planes can only fly so far, so AirAsia wants to establish hub airports in the Middle East, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

AirAsia is in talks with four cities in the Gulf, including in Saudi Arabia and the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, Fernandes told Dubai Eye radio this week. Bahrain is also a potential candidate, a company presentation showed on Friday.
