Italy’s Moltiply sues Google in 3 billion euro lawsuit over market dominance

An Italian spokesperson for Google declined to immediately comment

International news via Reuters:

Italy’s Moltiply Group said on Friday it was suing Alphabet’s Google and seeking damages of 2.97 billion euros ($3.34 billion) for abuse of its dominant market position as previously recognised by the EU Court of Justice.

Moltiply operates the popular Italian price comparison website Trovaprezzi.it.

Its claim argues that Google’s actions hindered the growth of its subsidiary 7Pixel between 2010 and 2017, favouring Google Shopping instead, Moltiply said in a statement.

The claim was filed at a Milan court, Italian daily Corriere della Sera said without giving further details.

An Italian spokesperson for Google declined to immediately comment.

The European Commission fined Google, the world’s most popular internet search engine, in 2017 for using its own price comparison shopping service to gain an unfair advantage over smaller European rivals.

In September, the company lost a final appeal against the 2.42 billion euro fine.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine to seek presidency, chides West over rights

Criticised the West for not denouncing what he said were escalating human rights violations

International news via Reuters:

Ugandan opposition leader and pop singer Bobi Wine said on Friday he plans to run for president for a second time and criticised the West for not speaking out more against “gross human rights violations” in the country.

Wine, 43, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, will be challenging long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, 80, who is widely expected to seek re-election.

“Yeah, I’ve expressed my availability on behalf of my team,” Wine said in an interview with Reuters when asked whether he would stand again in the east African country’s next presidential election, due in January.

Participation in the election, he said, will also be “a fighting opportunity to further undress and expose the regime and to further galvanise the people of Uganda to rise up and free themselves.”

Wine came second in the last election in 2021 but rejected the outcome, alleging ballot staffing, falsification of results, beatings and intimidation by soldiers and other irregularities.

Government and electoral officials denied the accusations.

Wine criticised Western governments for not denouncing what he said were escalating human rights violations, including abductions, illegal detention and torture of his supporters and officials. Wine did not single out any country for criticism.

“Some leaders in the West are complicit in our suffering. They are here to crack their (business) deals and they don’t care about human rights,” he said.

“If they were standing for the values that they profess, then they would be castigating all these gross human rights violations.”

Uganda is considered by the West as an ally in the fight against jihadists and has deployed troops in Somalia.

Uganda’s justice minister said this week that Eddie Mutwe, an activist in Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party, who also doubles as his personal body guard, appeared to have been tortured while in captivity.

Museveni’s son and head of the military, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said he had kept him in his basement and that he was using him as a punching bag.

After missing for a week Mutwe was on Monday produced in court, charged with robbery and remanded.

Wine said Mutwe told him he had been electrocuted, waterboarded and beaten.

Police spokesman Rusoke Kituma did not respond to a Reuters call for comment on the allegations. Reuters contacted a spokesperson for Uganda’s defence forces seeking comment from Kainerugaba. He did not respond.

Wine said that if was elected, his priorities would include restoration of political and civil rights and a crackdown on corruption.

Expedia shares fall after soft US travel demand leads to revenue miss

Expedia and the travel industry braces for a slowdown ahead of the peak summer season

International news via Reuters:

Shares of Expedia fell 9.2% before the bell on Friday, after the online travel-booking platform missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue due to weaker than expected demand in the U.S.

Expedia joins its peers as the travel industry braces for a slowdown ahead of the peak summer season, with economic uncertainty — driven by the ongoing tariff war and elevated interest rates — weighing on consumer spending.

At the end of April, hotel operator Hilton cut its annual forecast for room revenue growth, and vacation rental company Airbnb said earlier this month that the booking window was shortening, signaling consumer uncertainty and caution in travel spending.

“It’s all just a bit more pronounced in the case of Expedia with a bigger US presence than peers,” said BTIG analyst Jake Fuller.

The Seattle-based company reported revenue of $2.98 billion for the first quarter, below analysts’ expectations of $3.01 billion, according to LSEG compiled data.

“It’s clear that US travel has downshifted and to the extent trade/macro uncertainty lingers longer, it is less likely this plays out like the summer 2024 ‘growth scare’,” Barclays analysts wrote in a note.

The U.S. travel industry experienced a “growth scare” last summer, as elevated travel costs and uncertainty surrounding the presidential election dampened demand during what is typically a busy season.

Expedia reported an adjusted profit of 40 cents per share for the quarter ended March 31, compared with analysts’ estimate of 32 cents.

At least four brokerages cut their price targets on the stock, bringing the median to $201.33, according to data compiled by LSEG.

So far this year, Expedia shares have fallen 9.3%, compared with a 3.7% fall in the S&P 500 index during the same period.

Poland and France to deepen defence ties amid doubts over Washington’s support

Pundits say President Donald Trump’s long-term commitments to European security are in doubt

International news via Reuters:

France and Poland will on Friday sign a treaty to increase cooperation on defence and energy issues, in a sign of growing security alliances among European nations amid concerns about U.S. commitment to Europe’s defence.

The signing comes just 24 hours after the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and on the day that Moscow is holding a major military parade attended by China’s President Xi Jinping.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, speaking at a press conference before heading to France to meet with President Emmanuel Macron, said the treaty will include measures for mutual assistance in case of an attack on either country.

It also opens up opportunities for cooperation on the issue of a potential extension of the French nuclear umbrella to cover Poland, he said.

“From my experience, the provisions of the treaty are groundbreaking from the point of view of our safety,” he said.

However, the pact is not an “alternative” to Poland’s relations with the United States, Tusk said: “We need both America and a strong European Union.”

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s long-term commitments to European security are increasingly in doubt, the pro-European government in Warsaw is keen to diversify its security partnerships beyond traditional links with Washington.

The treaty is testament to fast-growing Poland’s increasingly pivotal role on the European stage, thanks to its strategic position on the continent’s eastern flank. A NATO member, Poland spends 4.12% of its economic output on defence, the highest percentage in the alliance.

The new bilateral treaty, the first one France has signed with a Central European country after a series of pacts with Italy, Spain and Germany, is seen by French officials as key to boost military cooperation and further French influence.

It comes after Macron said in March he was open to extending  French nuclear capabilities to other European nations.

French officials said the treaty will include language meant to facilitate talks with Poland on France’s “vital interests” – code for nuclear deterrence. They said France’s nuclear umbrella won’t replace the U.S. security guarantee, but would complement Poland’s defence if faced with threats.

The treaty is being signed in the eastern French city of Nancy, where the former Polish King Stanislaw Leszczynski lived in the late 18th century, becoming the Duke of Lorraine after losing the Polish throne.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs jury to be seated in hip-hop mogul’s sex trafficking trial

The rapper has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including sex trafficking

International news via Reuters:

A jury of 12 New Yorkers is due to be chosen on Friday in the racketeering and sex trafficking trial of hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, who could face decades or even life in prison if convicted.

The rapper has pleaded not guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation for prostitution – all felonies.

Over three days this week, the judge overseeing the case questioned nearly 100 prospective jurors on subjects including what they had heard about Combs’ case and any experiences they had had with sexual assault.

With input from defense lawyers and prosecutors, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian in Manhattan dismissed the jurors he deemed unfit to serve and settled on 45 candidates qualified to serve fairly and impartially.

On Friday, lawyers for each side will take turns striking candidates until a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates is chosen – a chess match with potentially decisive implications in the outcome of the trial.

Combs, a Harlem native who founded the pioneering record label Bad Boy Records and discovered iconic rappers including the Notorious B.I.G., was arrested last September and has been held in a Brooklyn federal lockup since then.

The charges marked the stunning downfall of a titan of the music industry who once held a ceremonial key to the city of New York and was known for throwing lavish parties for A-list celebrities.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office say that for two decades Combs used his business empire to lure women into his orbit with promises of romantic relationships or financial support, then violently coerced them to take part in days-long, drug-fueled sexual performances known as “Freak Offs.”

In court papers, prosecutors allege Combs kept his victims obedient by drugging and blackmailing them. He is accused of kidnapping a person at gunpoint, dropping a Molotov cocktail into a car and hitting, choking and dragging victims in acts of violence dating back to the 1990s.

Combs’ lawyers have said prosecutors are improperly seeking to criminalize Combs’ “swinger lifestyle.” They have signaled they plan to attack the credibility of the alleged victims who will testify by seeking to show they had financial incentives to accuse Combs. They have said the women gave inconsistent accounts of the alleged assaults to investigators.

Subramanian has said the trial will last around eight weeks, with the alternate jurors serving as backups in case jurors are unable to finish. Any verdict must be unanimous.

The trial is expected to feature testimony from three, or possibly four, accusers including Combs’ ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura, a rhythm and blues singer known professionally as Cassie.

Combs faces more than 50 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault, including one by a plaintiff who says he was 10 years old at the time of the alleged attack.

Combs has denied wrongdoing in those cases and claimed his accusers are seeking a payday.

UK needs to rebuild trading relationship with EU, BoE boss says

The European Union is the United Kingdom’s largest trading partner

International news via Reuters:

Britain needs to rebuild its trading relationship with the European Union, the Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey told the BBC, adding that growing trade with the bloc would be beneficial to the UK.

Britain and the EU are holding a summit on May 19 that could lead to closer defence cooperation and pave the way for agreements to ease trading.

Bailey was asked by the BBC about the potential reset of UK-EU relations and their impact on the economy and inflation, after Britain on Thursday agreed a limited bilateral trade agreement with the United States.

Reversing the decline in trade with the EU which followed the country’s exit from the bloc in 2020 would be a positive step, he said, adding that as a public official he did not take a view on Brexit.

“Having a more open economy to trade with the European Union,” Bailey said. “It would be beneficial.”

The EU remains Britain’s largest trading partner.

“It is important we do everything we can to ensure that whatever decisions are taken on the Brexit front do not damage the long-term trade position. So I hope that we can use this to start to rebuild that relationship,” he said.

The scam is being called the NetherexPro Investment Program

Scam Computer Keys Showing Swindles And Frauds

Government update via press release:

The Ministry for the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation today issued a warning about a fraudulent online post that falsely uses the name and image of the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, Hon. Diallo V. S. Rabain, JP, MP, to promote a scam investment platform targeting Bermuda residents.

The post, which is circulating on social media platforms, falsely claims that more than 10,000 Bermuda residents have profited from a so-called “NetherexPro Investment Program,” promising guaranteed weekly incomes with minimal investment. The page mimics legitimate news sources and features content designed to mislead the public.

The spokesperson continued, “Unfortunately, fraudsters are increasingly using artificial intelligence and other tools to generate convincing fake articles, videos, and images that misuse the likeness of public officials to lure victims. We urge residents to exercise extreme caution online. Always verify the authenticity of any investment opportunity and never rely on information from unverified websites or social media posts.”

New Pope Leo XIV vows to bring light to world’s “dark nights”

Before his election, U.S. cardinals had largely been written off as papal contenders

International news via Reuters:

Pope Leo XIV on Friday celebrated his first Mass in the Sistine Chapel where he was elected less than 24 hours earlier and prayed that his historic papacy can help the Catholic Church be a beacon illuminating “the dark nights of this world”.

Leo, the former Cardinal Robert Prevost and the first U.S. pope, looked serene as he said the Mass in the famous, frescoed chapel with the same cardinals who chose him to be the 267th pontiff and the successor to Pope Francis.

Dressed in relatively simple white and gold vestments, Leo, who was born in Chicago but spent two decades as a missionary in Peru, said a few words in English before continuing his homily in fluent Italian. He painted the spiritual picture of the Church he would like to see under his papacy.

“God has …. entrusted this treasure to me so that, with his help, I may be its faithful administrator for the sake of the entire mystical Body of the Church,” he said.

“He has done so in order that she may be ever more fully a city set on a hill, an ark of salvation sailing through the waters of history and a beacon that illumines the dark nights of this world,” he added, according to the official translation.

The 1.4 billion-member Church, was great not because of “the magnificence of her structures or the grandeur of her buildings … but rather through the holiness of her members.”

SWIFT APPOINTMENT

Leo, aged 69, was elected at the end of a swift two-day conclave that was wrapped up on Thursday evening when white smoke billowed from the chimney on the chapel.

Before his election, U.S. cardinals had largely been written off as papal contenders because of a widespread assumption that the global Church could not be run by a superpower pope.

However, he also holds Peruvian citizenship, meaning that he has deep knowledge of both the West and less developed nations.

After the Mass, Leo will have lunch with the cardinals who elected him and they will then be free to leave the Vatican and return to their homes around the world.

The successor to Pope Francis, who died last month at the age of 88, inherits a number of major challenges, ranging from a budget shortfall to divisions over whether the Church should be more welcoming towards the LGBT community and divorcees, and should let women play a greater role in its affairs.

U.S. President Donald Trump was quick to congratulate Leo. However, the new pope has a history of criticizing Trump and Vice President JD Vance’s policies, according to posts on the X account of Robert Prevost.

The new pope worked for decades in the north of Peru, first as a missionary and later as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. Catholics took to the streets of the small city in northwestern Peru, and church bells rang out to celebrate the election of a man who they embrace as one of their own.

One of the clues to what kind of a Church leader Leo will be was in his choice of name, something that pontiffs often use to send a signal about the priorities of their new papacy.

The last pope with this name was Leo XIII, who led the Church from 1878-1903. He was known for his devoted focus to social justice issues, and is often credited with laying the foundation for modern Catholic social teaching.

Prevost became a cardinal only in 2023. He has given few media interviews and is known to have a shy personality.

Francis brought him to Rome two years ago to head the Vatican office in charge of choosing which priests should serve as Catholic bishops across the globe, meaning he has had a hand in selecting many of the world’s bishops.

North Korea’s Kim visits Russian embassy as his generals meet Putin

About 600 North Korean troops have been killed fighting for Russia against Ukraine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un speaks during a meeting of the country’s ruling party, in Pyongyang, North Korea, in this photo released on December 29, 2024 by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency. KCNA via REUTERS/File Photo

International news via Reuters:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a rare visit to Russia’s embassy in Pyongyang with his daughter on Friday and reaffirmed “the invincible alliance” between the two countries, while Russia’s leader greeted North Korean generals in Moscow.

Congratulating Russia on the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, Kim said North Korea would “consolidate and develop the long tradition of the DPRK-Russia relations, the noble ideological foundation and the invincible alliance”, state-run KCNA reported.

Kim has taken his young daughter to a variety of events recently, part of what South Korean intelligence views as plans for her to succeed her father.

North Korea’s unprecedented deployment of thousands of troops, as well as huge amounts of artillery ammunition and missiles, has helped Russia push back a Ukrainian incursion into its western Kursk region. It has also brought North Korea and Russia – both economically and politically isolated – closer.

More than three years after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia is marking the World War Two anniversary with a military parade attended by China’s Xi Jinping.

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin greeted North Korean army generals with handshakes after hosting the parade.

Putin embraced Kim Yong Bok, a three-star general who is considered to be a key figure overseeing North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia. Kim is subject to sanctions by the United States, South Korea and the European Union.

“All of the best wishes to all of your warriors,” Putin said in video footage of their encounter.

Kim responded to Putin by thanking him for his “high evaluation.”

With Kim was Sin Kum Chol, another general blacklisted by the South Korean government over involvement in the war in Ukraine.

About 600 North Korean troops have been killed fighting for Russia against Ukraine out of a total deployment of 15,000, according to the South Korean intelligence.

In return, Pyongyang appears to have received technical assistance on satellites, as well as drones and anti-aircraft missiles, South Korea has said.

Pyongyang and Moscow have denied the weapons trade, although the two countries have confirmed the deployment of North Korean troops on the frontlines in Russia’s Kursk region.

De Couto: ‘Gov’t says surplus – but there’s millions in deficit spending’

Ahead of Budget reply, OBA questions reliance on revenues from international business

‘Regulatory regime, not tax, brings business to Bermuda’

Co-head of growing insurance company wants a “pipeline” of local talent into the industry

Bermuda’s robust regulatory regime is attracting business – and that’s of greater importance to insurers than issues with the Corporate Income Tax.

That’s a takeaway from our conversation with Global Atlantic’s Darryl Herrick.

The insurer has recently expanded its operation with a new office in Hamilton, boasting nearly 60 staff – a quarter of whom are Bermudian – and the intent to have a pipeline of new Bermudian talent into the industry.

(ABOVE: Highlights from the event above; BELOW: Extended interview with Global Atlantic Re President, Darryl Herrick)

Life insurers Global Atlantic showed off their strategic expansion into Washington House this week – a 15-thousand square foot modern office space looking out over City Hall and the bustling streets of Hamilton.

Daryll Herrick, President at Global Atlantic Re, said “We’re incredibly excited to celebrate what’s really a new chapter for us… we started this business over a decade ago with three people… We’ve now grown to almost 60.”

About a quarter of the team is Bermudian, Mr Herrick says, and the company is passionate about building a sustainable talent pipeline in Bermuda.

“That’s everything from working with the high schools”, Mr Herrick says, “to working with interns and having them grow up through this organization, so that they can start and thrive here as actuaries.”

Malika Cartwright, Director at the Department of Workforce Development, said it is amazing that the company is investing in our young people.

Barclay Simmons, Director of IVY II and former Director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, said “as the insurance market grows in size and complexity, our island benefits”.

“Companies like Global Atlantic are helpfully contributing to that growth.”

Global Atlantic specialise in life insurance and retirement planning.
