New data from Narrative Research highlights the widespread reach of fraudulent activity on island
New research is shedding light on the scale of fraud in Bermuda.
According to Narrative Research Bermuda, one in six islanders has fallen victim to a scam.
In just the past couple of months, police have warned of two separate schemes – a phone scam where fraudsters pose as bank representatives, costing victims millions, and a WhatsApp scam where criminals impersonate you to solicit money from your contacts.
Margaret Chapman, COO and partner at Narrative Research, says the rise in cases prompted the company to survey the public.
Ms Chapman, says while the findings are concerning, there is a positive takeaway – nearly all residents are taking steps to protect themselves.
Other tips to stay safe include, avoid clicking suspicious links, never share personal details, and report any suspected scam activity to police.
