Olympic triathlete Tyler Smith and a relentless Maddie Durkin have claimed the ultimate local bragging rights, being crowned the men’s and women’s champions at the spectacular Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby.
Ryan Outerbridge (3rd), Tyler Smith (1st), and Lamont Marshall (3rd)
In the men’s division, Smith showcased his elite international pedigree early on, breaking away from the leading pack to isolate pre-race favorite Ryan Outerbridge. Operating at a blistering tempo, Smith never looked back, storming home to a comfortable victory in an impressive time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 49 seconds.
For Outerbridge, it was a familiar story of heartbreak as he crossed the line in 1:15:06 to settle for a second-place finish for the third consecutive year. Five-time champion Lamont Marshall utilized his immense veteran experience to round out the men’s podium, taking third in 1:15:42.
Christine Dailey (2nd), Maddie Durkin (1st), and Teresa Ruiz (3rd)
Meanwhile, the women’s event belonged entirely to the flying Maddie Durkin. Durkin put on a magnificent display of endurance to finish an incredible 15th overall, stopping the clock at 1:27:56 to seal the women’s crown.
Christine Dailey fought hard to secure the second female spot, placing 19th overall in 1:28:49, while a resilient Teresa Ruiz completed the women’s podium in 25th overall with a time of 1:31:25.
She’s witnessed the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby evolve through generations.

Government House Press Release: HIS MAJESTY THE KINGS’S BERMUDA DAY MESSAGE 2026
Dear Governor,
As the people of Bermuda mark the occasion of Bermuda Day, my wife and I take this opportunity to extend our sincere congratulations to your Premier and to all those who call Bermuda their home.
I would also like to offer my heartfelt gratitude for the wonderfully warm welcome I received across Bermuda during my visit earlier this month. As I reflect on that visit, I join you in recognising and celebrating the many remarkable young people on these islands. I greatly appreciated seeing at first-hand the conservation work at the Living Classroom on Trunk Island, helping to protect and preserve Bermuda’s unique biodiversity for future generations. Our long-term wellbeing is inseparable from the health of the natural world we inherit, and I am hugely encouraged by the emphasis placed on engaging young people in caring for local habitats.
I have long held a special affection for the Overseas Territories, and I greatly value the unique character, traditions and contributions of each Territory within our wider British family. The strength of community, pride in heritage and commitment to progress are qualities I deeply admire.
My wife and I trust that the coming year will bring continued progress and wellbeing to the whole community of Bermuda.

he announcement comes two days after U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters a U.S. troop deployment to Poland had been delayed
International News via Reuters:
The United States will be sending an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday.
Trump, in a Truth Social post, cited his relationship with Poland’s conservative nationalist president, Karol Nawrocki, as the reason behind his decision to send additional troops.
The announcement comes two days after U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters a U.S. troop deployment to Poland had been delayed.
The U.S. had been reviewing its troop presence in Europe and had long been expected to scale it back following demands from Trump that NATO take a larger role in the defense of Europe.
“Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump said in the post.
Trump hosted Nawrocki at the White House in May last year and backed him at a crucial moment ahead of the Polish election in which Nawrocki went on to defeat the candidate of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European, centrist party.
He met Nawrocki again at the White House in September, and said at the time that the U.S. could increase its troop presence in Poland and pledged to secure the country’s defense.

The visit would be notable in Uruguay, one of the region’s most secular countries, where church and state are formally separated
International News via Reuters:
Pope Leo is set to visit Uruguay in November, news outlet Teledoce reported on Thursday, citing the Catholic Church in Montevideo.
Uruguay’s foreign ministry confirmed to Reuters it is preparing for the visit, which would form part of a broader tour of southern Latin America announced in February and is expected to also include Peru and Argentina.
The visit would be notable in Uruguay, one of the region’s most secular countries, where church and state are formally separated.
Pope Leo’s visit to the region at the end of the year is expected to draw large crowds to see a pontiff, who was a missionary in Peru for decades.
Leo, the former U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost, was first ordained a bishop for the diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru’s northwest, and became a Peruvian citizen in 2015.
