Chance of ECB rate hike has risen, board member Cipollone says

Inflation hit 3% in April with further increases expected, and policymakers said they may need to raise interest rates if longer term price expectations rose or wage demands increased sharply

International News via Reuters:

The chance of a European Central Bank rate hike has risen as inflation pressures are high, board member Piero Cipollone said on Wednesday, even as negotiated wage data showed pay demands had yet to increase.

Inflation hit 3% in April with further increases expected, and policymakers said they may need to raise interest rates if longer term price expectations rose or wage demands increased sharply.

“Overall, the current situation seems to be drifting away from our March baseline projections, which increases the likelihood that we may need to adjust our policy rates,” Cipollone said in a speech in Milan.

While inflation expectations remain firmly around target, memories of the previous energy shock around the time Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 are fresh, and could lead to a faster adjustment in inflation expectations, Cipollone added.

IRAN WAR HAS YET TO DRIVE UP WAGE DEMANDS

So far, wage trends, a worry for policymakers, are broadly unchanged since the start of the Iran war, suggesting that workers have yet to demand compensation for the inflation surge.

Negotiated wage growth with smoothed and unsmoothed one-off payments are expected to both be 2.6% by the end of 2026, unchanged from the last projection in late March, the ECB said, based on data collected by the middle of April.

Such a rate would be consistent with levels policymakers deem to be appropriate for inflation to return to the ECB’s 2% target in the medium term.

Still, financial markets expect three rate hikes from the ECB, with the first one fully priced in by July, to be followed by moves in the autumn or early 2027.

Cipollone also said that the economic impact of the war in the Middle East could be far larger than experienced so far as supply shortages could curtail industrial production.

“Europe could start running out of jet fuel and kerosene reserves by the end of May, potentially leading to material restrictions on the activity of several industries akin to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

Pound gains from optimism over US-Iran deal, options suggest calm after local elections

In Britain, key local elections take place on Thursday and Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is bracing for big losses

International News via Reuters:

The pound rose against the dollar on Wednesday, as investors took heart from an Axios report saying that the United States and Iran were closing in on a deal to end the war.

In Britain, key local elections take place on Thursday and Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is bracing for big losses. Repeated scandals and criticism that it has not yet delivered an improvement in living standards have stirred speculation Starmer may be replaced, a cause for concern for investors in the bond and currency markets.

Prediction market site Polymarket shows there is a near-70% chance Starmer will be out by December. That has risen from a low probability of 49% in early April.

Sterling was last up 0.6% on the day at $1.3621 around its highest since February. Against the euro, the pound was steady, leaving the single currency at 86.35 pence.

“More political instability could be on its way and investors could well be positioning for the potential for renewed political instability that could follow Thursday’s local elections,” MUFG currency strategist .

The pound has gained nearly 7% since Labour won the 2024 general election and benchmark interest rates are at 3.75%, down from 5.25%.

But the economy is flatlining, inflation is starting to flare as energy prices surge due to the U.S-Iran conflict, and borrowing costs for anything from a mortgage to personal loans have risen to multi-year highs, as gilt yields have risen.

Five-year gilts yield was around 4.53%, having jumped from 3.68% before the war broke out in late February and they are up from 4.05%, when Labour came to power.

A survey of monthly business activity showed UK services firms witnessed the largest rise in price pressures in three and a half years in April, with more than half of the respondents reporting an increase in their average cost burdens.

Meanwhile, the options market painted a fairly sanguine picture for the election, as the cost of protection against big overnight swings in the pound fell in line with that for other major currencies.

Overnight implied volatility, one measure of the cost of hedging against big moves in the pound over a 24-hour period, drifted to around 6.83%, roughly in the middle of its recent range. Overnight implied vol for euro/sterling, meanwhile, was also relatively subdued at 2.71%, according to LSEG data.

A week ago, the cost of hedging against a big move after Thursday’s election was around 6.27%.

Rideshare applications are open

150 Rideshare permits are available, with only 13 applicants as of Tuesday afternoon… Transport Minister Owen Darrell wants to make sure the public is aware that the process is open

Applications opened last week to become a rideshare operator.

Initial interest in the 150 annual permits has been low, with only 13 applicants as of this afternoon – possibly due to the distraction of the King’s visit.

With less than a week and a half left until applications close, Transport Minister Owen Darrell wants to make sure the public is aware that the process is open.

WATCH the report above. Government press release below…

Government of Bermuda Press Release:

The Ministry of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport announced that applications opened on Thursday, April 30, 2026 for Bermuda’s first regulated ridesharing initiative.

The two-week application window will remain open until Thursday, May 14, 2026. Eligible applicants are encouraged to review the requirements and submit their completed applications before the deadline.

A total of 150 ridesharing permits will be issued as part of the initial rollout, with ridesharing operations expected to begin on June 10, 2026. Ten of the 150 permits will be allocated for wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

The initiative has been designed to strengthen Bermuda’s transportation network, improve availability during periods of high demand, and provide residents and visitors with an additional regulated option for getting around the island.

Minister of Tourism &Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen K. Darrell, JP, MP, said the launch of the application process marks an important step in Bermuda’s wider transport modernisation efforts.

“The ridesharing application launch is an important milestone,” said Minister Darrell. “Ridesharing has been carefully designed to complement Bermuda’s taxi industry, not replace it. Our approach remains clear: taxi first, rideshare when needed. This initiative is about improving transportation reliability, supporting passenger safety, and ensuring that Bermuda has a modern, regulated framework that works for residents, visitors, and the wider economy.”

Individuals interested in applying must meet specific eligibility requirements, such as:

  • possessing a valid licence to operate a Public Service Vehicle (PSV).  Those holding PSV licences that only cover heavy trucks or community service vehicles do not qualify.
  • their vehicle must either be:
    • A private motor car that is used mainly for personal transportation; or
    • A purpose-built vehicle that can transport a passenger needing mobility assistance (i.e., a passenger who uses a wheelchair or mobility scooter), as defined in the Motor Car Act 1951.

Following the close of the application period, if the number of eligible completed applications exceeds the 150 available permits, applications will be randomised by an independent third party to ensure the selection process is unbiased.

Minister Darrell emphasised that ridesharing will operate within Bermuda’s existing regulated transportation framework. Passengers will not request rideshare vehicles directly. Ride requests will continue to be managed through despatching apps that are managed by approved despatching services, with taxis receiving priority before a ride request is released to an approved rideshare operator.

The Minister added, “This is a regulated, limited, and accountable model. It is not an open-market ridesharing system. It has been developed to protect standards, preserve taxi priority, and provide additional capacity when it is needed most.”

External ridesharing companies are not permitted to operate in Bermuda.

Eligible PSV licence holders have until May 14 to apply for one of the 150 regulated ridesharing permits ahead of the June launch.

Eligible persons interested in applying are encouraged to visit the Transport Control Department’s website at www.tcd.bm for application details, requirements, and official guidance. Application must be received by 5 pm on May 14.

EU urges US to restore trade deal tariffs as anniversary nears

The Commission added that it would be beneficial if the main terms of that deal were in place ahead of its one-year anniversary at the end of July

International News via Reuters:

The European Union’s trade chief has urged the United States to swiftly restore the tariffs agreed in last year’s EU-US trade deal, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

The Commission added that it would be beneficial if the main terms of that deal were in place ahead of its one-year anniversary at the end of July.

Maros Sefcovic met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Tuesday, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to increase tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25% among the EU’s main concerns.

The Commission said the two men had held a one-and-a-half hour discussion on the most pressing aspects of the trade agreement. Trump says he is hiking car tariffs because the European Union is not complying with the deal’s terms.

The EU executive said Sefcovic had updated Greer on the likely timeline for the EU to implement the removal of EU duties on imported U.S. industrial goods, as the two sides agreed last year. That is unlikely to be before June.

“At the same time, he called for a swift return to the agreed Turnberry terms, i.e. a 15% all-inclusive tariff rate, with the agreed carve-outs for the EU,” the Commission said.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the previous global tariffs in February and Washington replaced them with a blanket 10% surcharge on top of existing duties. In some cases, EU goods therefore face a U.S. tariff above 15%.

“It would be beneficial for the main features of the deal to be in place ahead of its one-year anniversary,” the EU executive continued, adding that Sefcovic and Greer had agreed to step up engagement.

FTSE 100 slides as HSBC’s results, inflation fears dent sentiment

The blue-chip FTSE 100 dropped 1.4% to 10,219.1 points at the close, clocking its biggest one-day drop since late March

International News via Reuters:

The UK’s FTSE 100 slid more than 1% on Tuesday, as traders returned from a bank holiday to witness a rout in financial stocks driven by HSBC’s surprise loss and concerns about the U.S.-Iran conflict.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 dropped 1.4% to 10,219.1 points at the close, clocking its biggest one-day drop since late March. The midcap FTSE 250 shed 0.4%.

• HSBC’s shares fell 5.9% after the British bank reported an unexpected $400 million loss linked to a fraud case, raising further questions about lenders’ private credit exposure.

• The overall bank index dropped 4.6% to a near one-month low.

• The broader market was also responding to growing tensions in the Middle East, with the United Arab Emirates saying it was under attack from Iranian missiles and drones, even as Washington said a shaky ceasefire was intact despite an exchange of fire the previous day.

• Brent crude futures retreated, but held near $110 a barrel, stoking concerns that elevated energy prices would fuel inflation and force major central banks to maintain a tighter monetary policy.

• Traders are pricing in two or possibly three interest rate hikes by the Bank of England by the end of 2026.

• Travel-related stocks fell on concerns about higher fuel costs. Cruise operator Carnival and British Airways operator IAG dropped 3.7% and 1.6%, respectively.

• Britain’s Intertek jumped almost 6% after the company said it was reviewing a revised takeover bid from Swedish private equity group EQT AB.

• Britain’s largest broadband and mobile provider, BT Group, climbed 1.7% after BofA Global Research upgraded the stock to “buy”, citing the potential for a higher dividend payout.

• Vodafone dipped 2.2% after the telecoms company agreed to buy its partner CK Hutchison’s stake in VodafoneThree for 4.3 billion pounds ($5.8 billion).

Nissan to cut 900 job cuts in Europe as part of global restructuring

The job cuts will focus on white-collar and warehouse roles, a Nissan Europe spokesperson said, adding that the company’s current European headcount stands at about 9,300

International News via Reuters:

Nissan Motor will cut about 900 jobs in Europe, around 10% of the total, and consolidate production from two lines to one at its Sunderland plant in the UK as part of a global restructuring drive, the Japanese automaker said on Tuesday.

The job cuts will focus on white-collar and warehouse roles, a Nissan Europe spokesperson said, adding that the company’s current European headcount stands at about 9,300.

The company’s sweeping turnaround plan, launched last year under Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa, aims to restore profitability after heavy losses, reduce Nissan’s global manufacturing footprint and cut its total workforce by 15%.

“We have been taking decisive actions to enhance performance and create a leaner, more resilient business that adapts quickly to market changes,” Nissan said in a statement.

In addition to the layoffs, the Nissan Europe spokesperson said the carmaker, Japan’s fourth largest, was looking at other moves in Europe, including shifting to a distribution model managed by importer partners in Nordic markets.

“The proposals in the consultation include a headcount reduction across Europe of 900 jobs, the partial closure of our warehouse in Barcelona, and in the Nordics market we are going to change the distribution model,” the spokesperson said.

“We are also consolidating production in Sunderland plant from two lines to one line, because we are looking for opportunities with our parties to maximize our plant utilization.”

A Nissan Spain spokesperson said around 500 people in Spain work in the areas targeted by the layoffs, but added that the final figure will be negotiated with unions in the coming weeks and would likely be lower than that.

“This is a new disappointment by Nissan for which again the only solution that it seeks to adapt to a situation is to fire workers,” said Miguel Ruiz, leader of Spanish Nissan union USOC, adding that it was too early to know final job loss numbers.

In 2020, Nissan shut its main factories in Barcelona affecting around 3,000 jobs.

A spokesperson for Nissan Manufacturing UK confirmed that the focus was white-collar roles and said that there would be no production job losses at the Sunderland plant.

The Financial Times first reported the job cut plans.

Nissan is expected to update on the progress of its restructuring plan when it reports full-year financial results later this month, and has said it will announce further elements of its strategic direction later in the year.

New plan targets barriers facing entrepreneurs

National Entrepreneurship Strategy focuses on financing gaps, slashing red tape and startup support

One in four islanders is interested in starting a business but barriers like limited financing and a complex process are holding them back.
A new blueprint launched today aims to cut red tape and turn that ambition into action.

It’s a joint initiative between the Ministry of Economy and Labour and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation.
The National Entrepreneurship Strategy is a five-year plan rolled out in three phases.

As BEDC Executive Director Erica Smith explains, the first step is removing barriers quickly, starting with a one-stop business hub.

The strategy also aims to improve access to financing through new tools, including a public-private Bermuda Innovation Scale-Up Fund, while expanding modern options like peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding – currently unavailable in Bermuda.

Another key focus is integrating entrepreneurship into the school system, as Economy and Labour Minister Jason Hayward explains.

Top European tech CEOs call for easier AI rules

The European Union resumes talks this month on streamlining the bloc’s 2024 AI Act, with the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, also due to present its “Tech Sovereignty Package” on May 27

International News via Reuters:

Europe’s AI regulations should be reduced and simplified, chief executives of seven of Europe’s top technology firms including Christophe Fouquet of the biggest, computer chip equipment maker ASML, said in an opinion piece published on Tuesday.

The European Union resumes talks this month on streamlining the bloc’s 2024 AI Act, with the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, also due to present its “Tech Sovereignty Package” on May 27 — including plans still under negotiation to support the computer chip industry and AI infrastructure.

“More than three years after the ‘ChatGPT moment’, Europe is still debating regulation, while others have long shifted focus to scaling AI in physical systems and robotics,” the executives wrote in the op-ed.

The commentary, published in newspapers including Germany’s Handelsblatt and Italy’s Corriere della Sera, also called for stronger industrial policy, and M&A rules that would allow European companies to grow.

“We face fragmented markets and subsidized rivals with very strong market penetration in the EU,” the executives wrote.

It was signed by the CEOs of ASML, Airbus , Ericsson, Mistral AI, Nokia,, SAP AG and Siemens, and followed a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
