Seven young men complete dynamic classroom renovation project funded by Ministry of National Security
International News via Reuters:
Seven young Bermudian males, aged 13 to 19, have returned from Georgetown, Guyana, after taking part in Project Guyana: Built for Change. The overseas service initiative was fully funded by the Ministry of National Security through its Violence Reduction Team (VRT), which gave the young men the opportunity to serve others, experience a different culture, build strong relationships and recognise their own capacity to make a positive difference.
The initiative forms part of the VRT’s work to create structured opportunities for young men from across Bermuda, and from different backgrounds, to spend time together, work towards shared goals and develop a spirit of service. Placed in an unfamiliar environment where they had to cooperate, solve problems and rely on one another, the participants were challenged to grow in ways that extend well beyond the work itself.
Project Guyana builds on earlier VRT overseas initiatives, including a similar service-based experience in Malawi, where another group of young Bermudian men worked on community projects designed to strengthen teamwork, personal development and positive relationships.
The most recent cohort travelled to Guyana from August 12–22, 2026, accompanied by Mr Darren Woods and Cadre Smith of the VRT, alongside Mr Donte Brangman of Clean Slate. Mr Brangman served as the project contractor, overseeing the renovation work, providing hands-on guidance and direction to the young men, and offering additional mentorship throughout the project.
The seven young men participating in the project were Keith Richardson, D’amori Riley-Noble, Daeshaun Landy, Khyari Tacklyn-Smith, Jakeeba Trott, Diondae Riley-Noble and Filiakai Camara.
At the heart of the trip was the renovation of classrooms at St. John Bosco Orphanage in Georgetown. The team scraped and cleaned classrooms, completed extensive painting, restored bookshelves and cabinets, reorganised classroom spaces and improved outdoor entrance areas. The project also provided new desks and chairs, updated whiteboards, classroom equipment, school supplies and games for the children and staff.
The renovation was supported by Mrs Rhonda Edwards-Adams, a Guyanese teacher at CedarBridge Academy, and her husband, who were in Guyana for the summer. The couple generously gave their time, helped the team acquire resources and materials for the project, and extended their hospitality to the group throughout their stay.
Throughout the trip, the young men also took part in social-emotional development activities, one-to-one conversations and group reflection sessions. The theme “Built for Change” took on real meaning: while they transformed classrooms, the wider purpose was to show that change is equally possible in their own lives.
On 10 September, a reflection ceremony was held at Treehouse Bermuda in Hamilton to recognise the young men’s experience and growth, bringing together family, friends and mentors.
Speaking to the young men at the ceremony, Minister of National Security, Sen. The Hon. Ryan Robinson Perinchief, JP, stated:
“There is a saying that a mind stretched by a new idea never returns to its original dimensions. That is what Project Guyana has given you. You have seen another part of the world, carried real responsibility and done service for others in another environment that has caused you to reflect on your own lives and your place in Bermuda and in this world. No one can ever take that perspective away from you. It is not about where you are, but where you are going. Every day, you have the power to choose your direction.”
The Minister reflected on the reflections shared from some of the participants at the ceremony and reminded participants that they should never believe they are making that journey alone.
“The Ministry funded this trip because we believe in you. As you return back to Bermuda and navigate future challenges, remember that even when you feel you are alone, that there are people here with you – an entire community of families, mentors, the team here at the Ministry and this Government – that stand behind you and want to see you succeed.”
Bishop Leroy Bean, Coordinator of the VRT, stated: “We have a tendency to focus on what our young people are doing wrong instead of celebrating what they are doing right. It is time to change that narrative and break that cycle. We must work together, invest in our young people and celebrate their growth, their achievements and their potential.”
Mr Smith and Mr Darren Woods said: “We saw resilience, growth and brotherhood. These young men didn’t just build in Guyana; they also saw and showed us what they are capable of building within themselves.
The classrooms at St. John Bosco will remain a lasting reminder of what these young men accomplished together, but the hope is that the greatest impact of Project Guyana will be seen here in Bermuda by virtue of the relationships they have built, the confidence they carry forward and the men they continue to become.

Butterfield shines in FA Trophy win while Clemons and Burgess suffer narrow defeats in England
Milan Butterfield led the way for Bermudian footballers in England on Saturday, bagging the decisive opener to guide Halesowen Town into the next round of the FA Trophy.
At The Grove, the Yeltz welcomed Wellingborough Town for their third qualifying round clash. Butterfield broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, pouncing on a costly defensive mix-up between Sam Warburton and goalkeeper Dan Snedker to tap into an empty net. The strike—Butterfield’s fourth of the season—set the foundation for a composed 2-0 victory for the hosts.
There was no such cup joy for international team-mate Willie Clemons, whose Leiston side bowed out at the same stage. The Blues hosted Isthmian Premier outfit Dartford at the Flannery Stadium but were unable to contain the visitors, suffering a 3-0 home defeat.
In the National League North, Jutorre Burgess and Harborough Town faced a daunting assignment away to Macclesfield at the Leasing.com Stadium. Harborough mounted a stubborn display on the road but ultimately left empty-handed after slipping to a narrow 1-0 loss.
In the Thurlow Nunn Premier League, Reggie Lambe played provider for Ipswich Wanderers in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Haverhill Rovers at the GBS Stadium. With the match delicately poised at 1-1 late in the first half, the experienced Bermudian playmaker picked out Jamie Eaton-Collins, who rifled home in the 44th minute to hand Wanderers the interval advantage. However, Haverhill hit back with a second-half equaliser to ensure the points were shared.
Elsewhere, Bermudian tactician Daizhari Tucker oversaw a disciplined defensive showing from Worcester Raiders at Sixways’ Claines Lane ground, steering his side to a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate against Westbury United.
A familiar piece of Hamilton’s public art landscape has been given new life, as the City of Hamilton completes the restoration of the Bermuda Flag mural at No. 1 Car Park on Front Street.
The restoration forms part of the City’s VIVID: City of Hamilton Public Art Initiative, which aims to enliven public spaces throughout Hamilton while connecting residents and visitors with Bermuda’s art, culture and creative community.
Originally created by The Chewstick Foundation on November 15, 2015, the Bermuda Flag mural stretches along the rear wall of the restroom building at No. 1 Car Park. More than 20 community volunteers helped create the original artwork, which was designed as a celebration of Bermuda’s national identity, culture and community pride.
More than a decade later, the City engaged The Chewstick Foundation to restore the mural, with Deidra-Lee Bean serving as project lead.
In keeping with the mural’s community roots, Chewstick also invited members of the public to take part in its restoration. Touch-up sessions were held on Wednesdays during Harbour Nights, giving passers-by the opportunity to contribute directly to the artwork and help restore a piece of Hamilton’s cultural landscape. Additional restoration work also took place on weekends.
The City’s Marketing Coordinator Mrs. Talisa McGlashan said the project reflects VIVID’s wider commitment to supporting Bermuda’s creative community while ensuring existing public artworks continue to enhance the City.
“The VIVID Public Art Initiative is committed to working with Bermuda’s local arts organisations and independent artists to curate and implement public art installations throughout Hamilton,” Mrs. McGlashan said. “Restoring existing works is an important part of that commitment, allowing us to preserve pieces that have become part of the City’s identity while continuing to support the artists and organisations behind them.
“Public art elevates Hamilton beyond being simply a place of commerce and activity. It creates opportunities for people to engage with their surroundings, celebrates Bermuda’s creativity and culture, and contributes to our mandate of maintaining a vibrant City.”
The City assesses its existing murals internally, taking into consideration factors including the condition of the artwork and the availability of the original artist or organisation. The City’s goal is to undertake approximately one mural restoration each year as part of its ongoing public art programme.
Previously known as the City Arts Festival, VIVID facilitates new public art installations and collaborations with Bermuda’s arts community while also maintaining and celebrating existing works.

Bermuda Broadcasting asked if there should be closer scrutiny over publicly-funded housing projects since the Minister in charge is a construction boss … Zane De Silva said he would be transparent about any private gains
Housing Minister and Construction boss Zane De Silva has pledged transparency over any public funds which come his way due to Government-led efforts to increase the housing stock.
He said this after tabling a ten-year housing strategy in the House of Assembly today.
The first phase of developments, using precast building components from overseas, are expected to break ground shortly.
Minister De Silva highlighted a sense of urgency over the matter, saying he had received calls from people desperate for housing.
Our Gary Foster Skelton pressed the Minister on the lack of Requests for Proposals, and the seemingly limited procurement processes around the current plans.
Ultimately, we asked if there should be much higher scrutiny over projects since he is not only the Minister in charge of directing funds, but a construction boss who could potentially see work coming his way.
He said he would be transparent about any private gains.
The regulator did not name the firms offering contracts-for-differences, which are complex financial products used to bet on the price of a wide range of assets without owning them

International News via Reuters:
Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority said on Friday that 21 firms offering CFDs had closed since 2025, three others were cancelling their regulatory permissions to trade and two face investigation after a crackdown on misleading customers.
The regulator did not name the firms offering contracts-for-differences, which are complex financial products used to bet on the price of a wide range of assets without owning them. The FCA has been cracking down on CFD providers since it restricted their sale to retail customers in 2019.
It said CFD firms that do little business in Britain, but use their authorisation to lend credibility to linked overseas businesses, led people to think they were dealing directly with a UK-regulated firm and would benefit from UK protections.
“Consumers need to know exactly who they’re dealing with and what protections they have,” Dominic Holland, the FCA’s director of sell-side supervision, said in a statement.
“When firms blur the lines between their UK-regulated activities and overseas businesses, we will step in,” he added.
Retail customers who trade CFDs through FCA-authorised firms can access the Financial Ombudsman Service to raise complaints, receive potential compensation in the event of firm failures, have limits placed on leverage and a range of other protections.
