Bermuda Police Service Press Release

Detective Superintendent Dennis Astwood – “The Bermuda Police Service (BPS), working with the Bermuda Reserve Police, is committed to ensuring a peaceful and safe environment for all during this year’s Bermuda Day holiday festivities, from Friday’s morning races in St. George’s and afternoon parade in the City of Hamilton, through the weekend.

Enhanced Police Presence & High Visibility Patrols: Expect a heightened police presence with high visibility patrols throughout Bermuda Day, Friday, 23rd May 2025 and the weekend. Our officers will be actively engaged in conducting roadside sobriety checks, as well as implementing appropriate stop and search initiatives at various locations to promote responsible behaviour, while mitigating instances of violence and anti-social behaviour.

Community Reporting: We urge the public to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicious activities. Should you observe anything of concern, promptly call 211 or dial 911, in case of emergencies. If you see something, say something.

Road Closures and Traffic Management: Roads along the race routes will close at 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Motorists travelling in the east end, especially those with morning flights out of L. F. Wade International Airport, are advised to plan their routes accordingly to avoid disruptions. Detours and delays are to be expected, with detailed information available on the Government of Bermuda’s official website https://www.gov.bm, as well as the Corporation of Hamilton’s official website https://www.cityofhamilton.bm.

Parking and Traffic Regulations: Designated no-parking areas will be clearly marked, and specific road closure times will be outlined in official gazetted notices. Once road closures are in effect for the City of Hamilton, vehicle movement will be restricted until the conclusion of the parade.

Your cooperation and adherence to these guidelines are crucial in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants and spectators during Bermuda Day celebrations. Similarly, the BPS encourages responsible behaviour throughout this holiday weekend, whether on land, or out on the water.

Let’s work together to create a harmonious and memorable festival of our heritage.”

Blueprint for energy sector is not late, says RA

Regulator taking a long-term approach to Integrated Resource Plan (IRP)

No, Mr Fahy – the Integrated Resource Plan, laying out Bermuda’s future energy strategy, is not late.

…so says the Regulatory Authority, citing that global practice for IRPs now favours a more long-term outlook.

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy recently stated that there is supposed to be an IRP every five years.

“You can’t make proper policy”, he said, “if the plans are not being followed and are not up to date or not being published on time.”

The 2019 IRP states that the Electricity Act requires that an IRP should be prepared and conducted “at least every five years”.

However, responding to questions from Bermuda Broadcasting, an RA spokesperson advised that there is no statutory deadline to produce the final IRP.

Long-term view

Expanding on the apparent change in approach, the spokesperson said a longer horizon is consistent with global best practice for IRPs – particularly in jurisdictions with limited land mass and high dependency on imported fuels.

“In alignment with this”, the spokesperson said, “the RA requested and was granted permission from the Minister responsible for Energy to issue the IRP request slightly beyond the five-year mark, allowing the utility to submit a more comprehensive 20-year proposal rather than the five-year minimum specified in the Act.”

BELCO’s IRP proposal was submitted ahead of the three-month public consultation period ending October 31st last year, with multiple energy scenarios and cost estimates projected as far as 2050.

The RA has acknowledged that incorporating additional data has impacted the IRP timeline, but states that it has enhanced the technical scope of the proposal.

The RA also requested more alternative generation proposals.

The initial consultation has concluded and is under review, we have been told. The RA will follow with a public consultation on the alternative proposals, and then further analysis before determining the “optimal generation mix before finalising the Integrated Resource Plan.”

All the same, the RA spokesperson said, they are working alongside all stakeholders to ensure the IRP is completed in a manner that is both comprehensive and timely.

No need for alarm over seaweed surge

Gov’t expecting new tractor to help clear beaches

Government says it understands the concern over a recent build-up of seaweed on Horseshoe Bay and other beaches.

However, a Ministry of Public Works spokesperson said it’s a natural seasonal occurance due to Bermuda’s position in the Atlantic.

It’s not unusual, and should not cause alarm, the spokesperson said.

All the same, Government will make investments to maintain the beauty of our beaches, we were told. Tractors have been deployed to remove the seaweed.

The spokesperson said, “to enhance our efforts and increase our operational capacity, funding for an additional tractor has already been approved, and procurement is underway.”

“Delivery of the new tractor is expected within six to eight weeks of the order being placed.”

“In the interim, the Department is also exploring whether an additional tractor can be sourced, on an as-needed basis.”

An important note, roads into the City of Hamilton will close at 7:30 a.m. on Friday for the half-marathon derby. The public is encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot.

Spectators will be able to purchase refreshments near the Birdcage on Front Street and in the Number Five car park next to the Flagpole. The Department of Culture is also sponsoring a free fun castle in that same location for families to enjoy.

Bat & Bougie Edge Thriller & Slug Pirates Power Past Sliders

Softball: 72 runs scored in last night’s double-header

The Michael Preece Softball Diamond was the venue for another night of high-octane action in the Bermuda Softball League. A thrilling double-header saw a total of 73 runs scored in two closely contested games.

Bat & Bougie edged a pulsating opener against the One Hit Wonders 17-16, with Liam Evans hitting two home runs for the victors. Samuel Vieria replied with two homers for the One Hit Wonders but couldn’t prevent the narrow defeat.

The nightcap saw the Slug Pirates deliver a commanding 28-12 victory over the B&V Sliders, led by a strong offensive performance from Michael Fraohlic. Despite Jumaane Davis hitting a home run for the Sliders, the Slug Pirates’ firepower proved decisive.

Another exciting night of big hits and close calls in the Bermuda Softball League.

Warwick and Sandys Claim Super 8s Cricket Titles

Interschool cricket

The Middle School Super 8s Cricket tournament reached its exciting conclusion at the White Hill Field, with both boys’ and girls’ titles fiercely contested.

In the boys’ final, Warwick Academy emerged victorious, defeating Sandys Secondary Middle School by a convincing 29 runs. Warwick’s strong batting performance, led by Henrik McIntosh and Thomas McBain, set up a challenging target that Sandys couldn’t reach.

However, Sandys Secondary Middle School exacted revenge in the girls’ final, claiming the title with a composed win over Warwick Academy. A solid batting display from Sandys, spearheaded by Yahri Smith, proved too much for Warwick to overcome, despite a close semi-final victory for Warwick earlier in the day.

The tournament, sponsored by RenaissanceRe and Skyport, showcased the bright future of Bermuda cricket at the middle school level.
