UK set to enter talks to join the European Union’s $105.9 billion Ukraine loan

The loan, approved by the EU last month, is set to cover two-thirds of Ukraine’s needs for the next two years

International News via Reuters:

Britain is set to enter talks to join the European Union’s 78 billion pound loan ($106 billion) to Ukraine, the government said on Sunday, in a further sign of deepening European defence ties under rising U.S. pressure.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected on Monday to tell a summit in Armenia’s capital Yerevan of the European Political Community – a discussion forum set up after Russia’s invasion in 2022 – that Britain wants to work with the EU to support Ukraine in getting vital military equipment, his office said.

The loan, approved by the EU last month, is set to cover two-thirds of Ukraine’s needs for the next two years, with the bulk of that amount earmarked for military spending as Kyiv defends itself against Russia’s four-year war.

The extra funding could also unlock opportunities for British businesses to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs, particularly in the defence sector, the government said in a statement.

FURTHER SANCTIONS ON RUSSIAN COMPANIES

Britain, which has imposed wide-ranging sanctions on Russia since the war began in 2022, will also announce another tranche of “stinging sanctions” on Russian companies this week to disrupt military supply chains, it said.

Starmer’s visit, the first by a British leader to Armenia since former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1990, comes as the Trump administration pushes Europe to take more responsibility for the continent’s defence.

European countries, including Germany, France and Britain, have recently come under further pressure from Washington after refusing to join the U.S. and Israel’s war on Iran.

“When the UK and the European Union work together, we all reap the benefits — and in these volatile times we need to go further and faster on defence to keep people safe,” Starmer said in the statement.

He has previously called for stronger defence integration within the continent to cut NATO’s over-reliance on the U.S., hinting at further alignment with the EU’s single market and deeper economic integration, six years after Brexit.

Trump says US will help free ships stranded in Strait of Hormuz

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social site, gave few details about the operation, including whether the U.S. Navy would be involved

International News via Reuters:

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States would begin an effort to free up ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday morning.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social site, gave few details about the operation, including whether the U.S. Navy would be involved. He described the effort as a “humanitarian gesture” meant only to aid neutral countries that were not involved in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business,” Trump wrote in the post.

The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.

US Attorney Pirro says officer was shot during White House correspondents’ dinner by suspect’s gun

Cole Tomas Allen is accused of storming a security checkpoint and firing a shotgun in the foyer leading to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25

International News via Reuters:

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said on Sunday that the government has evidence that a federal agent was shot by the suspect in custody during an alleged attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner last weekend.

“We now can establish that a pellet that came from the buckshot from the defendant’s Mossberg pump-action shotgun was intertwined with the fiber of the vest of the Secret Service officer,” Pirro said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“It is definitively his bullet,” Pirro said.

Cole Tomas Allen is accused of storming a security checkpoint and firing a shotgun in the foyer leading to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25. Allen is charged with attempted assassination, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and illegally transporting guns and ammunition across state lines. He has not yet entered a plea.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Sunday there could be more charges filed as the investigation continues.

“I expect in the next week or so, there will be more information coming out. Obviously, assuming the investigation moves forward, there will be an indictment forthcoming. And all that is typical of what happens,” Blanche said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Royal opening of Great Bay Coastguard Station

His Majesty King Charles III opened the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s new coastguard station at Great Bay before departing the island on Saturday

The Royal Bermuda Regiment now have an additional coastguard station in the east end at Great Bay, St. David’s after His Majesty King Charles III attended the official opening ceremony on Saturday morning.

As part of the Royal Visit, King Charles greeted crowds and met members of the RBR to present them with the new station as part of a wider project to bolster resources for Bermuda’s regiment.

The King was accompanied by National Security Minister Michael Weeks, Commanding Officer of the RBR Duncan Simons and other dignitaries for the event.

He later joined an official opening of a future telescope hub in joint partnership with the Bermuda Airport Authority and the UK Space Agency.

The site will be involved in tracking space debris and facilitate British missions with the UK Space Agency.

Final Day Heartbreak and Heroics: Trott’s Cardiff Promoted as Wells’ Luton Miss Out

The curtain fell on a dramatic football season with contrasting fortunes for two of Bermuda’s leading stars. While Nathan Trott celebrated a return to the Championship with Cardiff City, Nahki Wells and Luton Town were left to process a cruel exit from the promotion race.

At Field Mill, a nine-goal thriller saw Mansfield Town beat Cardiff 5-4. Trott watched from the sidelines as the Bluebirds—already guaranteed second place behind champions Lincoln City—trailed 3-0 at the interval. Despite a spirited second-half fightback featuring goals from Isaak Davies, Omari Kellyman, and Ronan Kpakio, Ollie Irow’s 80th-minute strike proved decisive for the Stags.

However, the real drama unfolded 200 miles away. Luton recorded a superb away win, hauling themselves back from a half-time deficit in a “must-win” fixture. But as the Hatters celebrated a last-gasp winner, news filtered through that a stoppage-time goal by Stevenage against Wigan had officially ended Luton’s play-off hopes.

The realisation was heartbreaking to witness. Despite an incredible run of nine wins in 12 games, Stevenage’s late intervention condemned Luton to another season of League One football. For Wells and his teammates, the victory felt entirely hollow, falling just short of the top six by the narrowest of margins.

An historic Royal Visit by His Majesty King Charles III came to an end on Saturday following a packed schedule of enagements over the past 24 hours.

King Charles, who visited Bermuda without Queen Camilla, arrived on Thursday evening in Bermuda, marking the first time a reigning Monarch had landed in the British Overseas Territory since 2009.

The last visit by King Charles to Bermuda was in 1970 as Prince of Wales and heir apparent to present the Speech to the Throne to parliament. Last evening, the Soverign remarked on the length of time that had passed before a King visited following Bermuda’s establishment as a settlement 400 years ago.

Reflecting on the relationship between the UK and Bermuda, King Charles made a statement to address invited guests at Government House during the Royal Garden Party on Friday evening.

King Charles said, “I need hardly say that Bermuda, like all the overseas territories, is a most cherished and important member of the British family, with a friendship as solid as this so-called ‘rock’.”

Today, the King was greeted by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Governor Andrew Murdoch, Commanding Officer of the RBR Duncan Simons, Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service Darrin Simons, Chief Justice Larry Mussenden, Cabinet Secretary Marc Telemaque, Opposition Leader Ben Smith and Premier David Burt.

They shook hands and shared quiet exchanges before the King departed for Buckingham Palace.

This officially concludes the Royal Visit to Bermuda and a diplomatic mission at US State visit where he addressed Congress to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.

US withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany, US officials say

Trump had threatened a drawdown in forces earlier this week after sparring with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

International News via Reuters:

The United States is withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany, the Pentagon announced on Friday, in an apparent U.S. rebuke to the close NATO ally amid a widening rift between President Donald Trump and Europe over the Iran war.

Trump had threatened a drawdown in forces earlier this week after sparring with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said on Monday the Iranians were humiliating the U.S. in talks to end the two-month-old war.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the withdrawal was expected to be completed over the next six to twelve months.
