BermudAir expands air service to New York

The airline has now launched direct flights to Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia

BermudAir issued the following press release.

Bermudians now have even more choice and flexibility when planning their next trip to the Big Apple. This month, BermudAir is expanding its network with the launch of new nonstop flights to Newark Liberty International (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA) airports. These new routes complement the airline’s existing service to Westchester County Airport (HPN) in White Plains, meaning Bermuda’s own airline now connects directly to all three points of what it calls the “New York Triangle”.

The addition of Newark and LaGuardia further strengthens BermudAir’s growing East Coast presence. This winter, the airline will serve eight U.S. destinations—Boston, Baltimore/Washington, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, Orlando, Newark, LaGuardia, and Westchester—along with Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax in Canada.

“Adding service to LaGuardia and Newark is a significant milestone for BermudAir,” said Adam Scott, Founder & CEO of BermudAir. “At the same time, many of our most loyal and frequent travellers to Westchester and Fairfield counties spoke up—and we listened. With the launch of our ‘New York Triangle’, we’re offering nonstop flights to the three most convenient New York City area airports, providing leisure and business travellers alike with more flexibility and convenient access from and to Bermuda.”

Service to Westchester (HPN) will now operate three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, departing Bermuda at 3:55 pm and arriving in Westchester at 5:00 pm, then departing at 6:00 pm and arriving in Bermuda at 9:05 pm.

BermudAir’s trio of New York routes have been warmly welcomed by the local community, reigniting the tradition of convenient day trips to and from the city. With morning departures to New York and Westchester’s easy late-afternoon return, travellers can once again enjoy quick business visits, shopping excursions, or spontaneous getaways. The “New York Triangle” truly reconnects Bermuda with the heartbeat of the city, offering
smooth, stress-free access to Manhattan and beyond.

Flights between Bermuda and Newark will operate twice-weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, departing Bermuda at 8 am, arriving into EWR at 9:30 am. Return flights depart Newark at 11:00 am, landing in Bermuda at 2:15 pm. Service to LaGuardia will operate twice-weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, departing Bermuda at 8:05 am, arriving into LGA at 9:35 am. Return flights depart LGA at 11 am, landing in Bermuda at 2:20 pm.

In conjunction with the expanded New York service, BermudAir Holidays has launched a major winter promotion to entice New York travellers to visit Bermuda. From October 15 through December 6, 2025, travellers can book exclusive $99 return flights to Bermuda when reserving a hotel stay through BermudAir Holidays. This offer, developed in partnership with the Bermuda Tourism Authority and the Bermuda Hotel Association, highlights Bermuda as the closest and most attainable winter escape from the city. The campaign will feature across Amazon, Google, and Meta platforms to inspire immediate bookings and boost travel to the island between December 1, 2025 and February 28, 2026.

All flights will be operated on BermudAir’s comfortable Embraer E175 and E190 aircraft, offering passengers the airline’s signature warm service and Bermudian hospitality. Tickets are now available for purchase on www.flybermudair.com. Youth Climate Summit broadens reach throughout Caribbean

BUEI’s 5th Annual Youth Climate Summit designated as COP30-affiliated dialogue

Press release:

Bermuda’s 5th Annual Youth Climate Summit (YCS), hosted by the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Multi Country Office in Jamaica today announced a strategic collaboration that will enhance Caribbean representation and expand youth engagement opportunities on climate action at this year’s Summit being held at BUEI from November 17 – 22, 2025.

Scheduled to take place in Hamilton, Bermuda days after the start of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, YCS — one of BUEI’s most impactful signature educational programmes — is now positioned by the UNDP Multi Country Office in Jamaica as one of its COP30-
affiliated dialogues in the region.

This innovative partnership combines YCS’s proven record of empowering young climate advocates with UNDP’s Climate Promise global programme to advance scaled-up climate action whilst promoting the UNDP Multi Country Office’s Ready Set Great initiative, an empowerment and advocacy movement facilitating youth-led solutions to the greatest challenges facing young people. UNDP’s partnership with BUEI connects to UNDP’s
youth engagement for climate action on the road to COP30, and to the Ready Set Great Call to Action climate pillar: “Youth contributing to and championing a healthy natural environment.”

The impactful collaboration between BUEI and UNDP paves the way for Caribbean youth ages 13 to 22 years who live outside Bermuda to register as virtual delegates in the Bermuda Youth Climate Summit via UNDP’s readysetgreatja.com website. As virtual delegates, participants will gain access to YCS virtual sessions scheduled for the first three days of the Summit, plus alumni masterclasses scheduled on day four.

Multi-Day Partnership Programming

The partnership also features integrated programming across multiple days of BUEI’s Youth Climate Summit. On day two, two youth activists from UNDP’s Ready Set Great initiative will present virtually alongside international peers, bringing first-hand Caribbean perspectives on their climate leadership and activities to the dialogue. Day
three’s agenda will showcase Dr. Kishan Khoday, UNDP Resident Representative, as one of three featured subject matter experts presenting virtually on climate policy and sustainable development.

On day four, UNDP will host an exclusive “Green Jobs of the Future” masterclass panel for Bermuda’s YCS alumni and Ready Set Great participants, highlighting sustainable career pathways in the growing green economy. The collaboration culminates on day five when UNDP’s Ready Set Great youth-developed Call to Action Declaration will contribute to the creation of Bermuda’s YCS alumni action document.

Expanding Regional Connections

This partnership significantly broadens YCS’s reach throughout the Caribbean, with UNDP encouraging virtual participation in the Summit from Ready Set Great participants and young people engaged in environmental programmes across their network. The collaboration creates new opportunities to build meaningful connections between like minded students within the region while maintaining YCS’s authentic, youth-driven approach.

The partnership also reflects the growing recognition of YCS’s impact in the youth climate space whilst providing UNDP with a platform to continue engaging young environmental advocates across the Caribbean and beyond.

UNDP Resident Representative Dr Kishan Khoday said “The critical nature of the climate emergency facing island nations and communities requires strategic youth engagement and mentorship for a climate ready future. As the world looks to COP 30 for an ambitious vision, our youth advocates must be proactive and forward thinking, ensuring their voices are heard in corridors of power. UNDP therefore welcomes this opportunity to work with the powerful Bermuda Youth Climate Summit on amplifying youth advocacy and action on climate change throughout the region. By facilitating the partnership between the Bermuda event and the Ready Set Great platform we are creating synergies that can only strengthen youth action, youth voices and youth impact in the Caribbean. UNDP feels it is vitally important to provide these opportunities, listen, learn and support, to advance the important cause of climate resilience within vulnerable island communities.”

“BUEI is excited to expand YCS throughout the Caribbean and connect like-minded young people, many of whom face similar climate challenges living in small island nations that are on the front lines of battling climate change,” said Traci Burgess, BUEI CEO. “Partnering with UNDP allows BUEI and YCS to expand our educational impact and make greater contributions to developing change makers who will be better prepared to use their voices in advocating for a healthier future. This significant collaboration provides substantial opportunities for youth from Bermuda and around the region to connect, educate, and inspire each other”.

About the Youth Climate Summit

Now in its fifth year, BUEI’s Youth Climate Summit has established itself as a leading platform for youth climate advocacy, connecting young environmental leaders and subject matter experts from Bermuda and around the world. The summit maintains strong partnerships with corporate and NGO supporters who have contributed to its
success since its inception in 2021. More information is available at www.YCSBDA.com.

Trinidad Inflicts 3-0 Defeat on Bermuda in World Cup Qualifier

Trinidad dominate Bermuda, 3 goals to nil

Bermuda’s ambitious journey in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers received another crushing blow, as the ‘Gombey Warriors’ fell 3-0 to rivals Trinidad and Tobago in a crucial Group B fixture at the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium tonight.

Coach Michael Findlay had labelled the match “do or die,” and the heavy defeat leaves Bermuda mathematically unable to secure a direct qualifying place or a playoff spot, with zero points from three matches in the final round of Concacaf qualification.

The home side was unable to contain the Trinidadian attack in the first half, allowing the visitors to finally find their scoring form in this qualifying campaign.

10th Minute (0-1): Dante Sealy put the Soca Warriors ahead, giving them their first goal of the round.

30th Minute (0-2): Tyrese Spicer doubled the advantage, sending Trinidad into the break with a commanding two-goal lead that left the home side with a desperate fight ahead.

Hopes for a famous Bermudian comeback—reminiscent of their effort against Curaçao—were quickly dashed just after the restart.

49th Minute (0-3): Defender Kobi Joseph Henry delivered the final, knockout blow for the visitors, scoring the third goal only four minutes into the second half. The goal immediately restored Trinidad’s cushion and deflated the home side.

The 3-0 loss confirms Bermuda are one defeat away from being eliminated from contention in Group B. With three matches remaining, the team will now need maximum points from their three upcoming fixtures starting with the match against Jamaica.

Bermuda’s World Cup Dream Fading as Soca Warriors Take Half-Time Command

Goals in the 10th and 30th minutes put Trinidad in the drivers seat

Bermuda are staring down the barrel in their must-win World Cup Qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago, trailing 2-0 at half-time at the National Sports Center.

The match, which coach Michael Findlay had labelled “do or die” for Bermuda’s 2026 hopes, saw the visitors take a commanding lead into the interval, effectively silencing the partisan home crowd.

Trinidad and Tobago, who entered the match having failed to get a point in their opening two qualifiers, found their rhythm early, capitalizing on defensive vulnerabilities in the Bermudian backline:

  • 10th Minute (0-1): Trinidad and Tobago’s MLS-based attacker Dante Sealy broke the deadlock. The forward, who plies his trade with CF Montreal, found space inside the box and finished clinically to put the Soca Warriors ahead.
  • 30th Minute (0-2): The visitors doubled their advantage when fellow MLS talent Tyrese Spicer (Orlando City) added the second goal. The strike came at the half-hour mark, leaving Bermuda with a mountain to climb.

Despite the deficit, Bermuda captain Nahki Wells attempted to spark the attack, but Bermuda have struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances against a resolute Trinidadian defence.

Developing nations rack up $3.9 billion in net debt payments to China a year, study finds

China, the world’s largest bilateral creditor, has historically played a key role in financing infrastructure projects across the Global South

International News via Reuters:

Developing nations are now paying more to service debt owed to China than they receive in new loans, a shift that risks deepening economic strain and slowing climate investment, a report released on Friday by Boston University’s Global Development Policy Center found.

The study, titled Reviving Chinese Development Finance in the Global South, revealed that net debt transfers—calculated as new loan disbursements minus principal and interest repayments—turned negative in 2022 and 2023, with developing nations repaying $3.9 billion more annually than they borrowed.

China, the world’s largest bilateral creditor, has historically played a key role in financing infrastructure projects across the Global South, committing over $472 billion through its policy banks—the China Development Bank and Export-Import Bank—between 2008 and 2024.

These funds supported more than 900 projects worth $316 billion in transport, energy, information technology, and water infrastructure, which “significantly contributed to public asset building, economic growth and poverty alleviation in the Global South,” authors Rebecca Ray, Kevin Gallagher, Zheng Zhai, Marina Zucker-Marques, and Yan Liang wrote in the study.

A revival by Beijing to overseas development finance could avoid derailing growth and climate investment across poorer nations.

“Countries across the Global South are in urgent need of a stepwise increase in financing to invest in low-carbon, socially inclusive and resilient economic growth,” the authors said.

The paper proposed five steps which would be mutually beneficial for China and the Global South: refinancing loans in distress, issuing RMB-denominated bonds, expanding green lending, supporting cooperative foreign investment and boosting South–South trade.

“Restarting growth-enhancing development finance in the Global South will help spur demand for Chinese exports,” they said.

Some of this is already happening. In June, China said it was making progress on removing all tariffs on the African states with which it has diplomatic ties.

Afreximbank launched its debut yuan denominated panda bond in April. In South Africa, the China-Africa Development Fund is preparing to bid for independent energy transition projects in Africa’s most industrialized economy.

And in Kenya, Finance Minister John Mbadi said this week that three Chinese railway construction loans have been converted from dollars to yuan to save on interest costs.

White House says substantial US government job cuts have begun

Job cuts were underway at the Treasury Department and the U.S. health agency, spokespeople said, but the total extent of the layoffs was not immediately clear

International News via Reuters:

The White House said on Friday that it had begun substantial layoffs across the U.S. government, as President Donald Trump followed through on a threat to cut the federal workforce during the government shutdown.

Job cuts were underway at the Treasury Department and the U.S. health agency, spokespeople said, but the total extent of the layoffs was not immediately clear. Roughly 300,000 federal civilian workers will leave their jobs this year due to a downsizing campaign initiated earlier this year by Trump.

“The RIFs have begun,” White House budget director Russell Vought wrote on social media, referring to so-called reductions in force. A spokesperson for the budget office characterized the cuts as “substantial,” without offering further details.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to fire federal workers during the shutdown standoff, in its 10th day on Friday, and has suggested his administration will aim primarily at “Democrat agencies.”

He has ordered the freezing of at least $28 billion in infrastructure funds for New York, California and Illinois – all home to sizable populations of Democratic voters and critics of the administration.

Trump’s Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, but need at least seven Democratic votes to pass a funding bill in the Senate, where Democrats are holding out for an extension of health-insurance subsidies.

HHS AND TREASURY

Employees across multiple divisions of the Department of Health and Human Services have received layoff notices, communications director Andrew Nixon said. The 78,000 workers at the sprawling agency manage major health insurance programs, monitor disease outbreaks, fund medical research, and perform a wide range of other health-related duties.

Roughly 41% of the agency’s staff have been ordered not to report to work during the shutdown, while others have been ordered to continue working without pay.

Nixon said the layoffs were targeted at those who had been furloughed but did not provide further details.

“HHS continues to close wasteful and duplicative entities, including those that are at odds with the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again agenda,” he said.

Layoffs have also begun at the Treasury Department, according to a spokesperson who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A labor union official, Thomas Huddleston of the American Federation of Government Employees, said in a court filing he had been told the Treasury Department was preparing 1,300 layoff notices. It was not clear whether those layoffs would hit the tax-collecting Internal Revenue Service, where 46% of the agency’s 78,000 employees were furloughed on Wednesday.

Other government agencies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Labor unions representing federal workers have sued to stop the layoffs, saying they would be illegal during a shutdown.

A federal judge is due to hear the case on October 16.

The government is required by law to give workers 60 days’ notice ahead of any layoffs, though that can be shortened to 30 days.

Italy ready to defend ‘golden powers’ against EU moves, economy minister says

Italy is among the EU countries that have made extensive use of golden power legislation to protect interests in sectors such as banking, defence and telecommunications

International News via Reuters:

The Italian government will defend its golden powers aimed at shielding strategic assets, its economy minister said on Friday, as Brussels prepares to challenge the legislation.

Italy is among the EU countries that have made extensive use of golden power legislation to protect interests in sectors such as banking, defence and telecommunications.

Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti told reporters in Luxembourg national security was not for European institutions to judge.

“National security is the exclusive responsibility of the national government, and we intend to defend it in some way,” he said at the end of a meeting among European finance ministers.

Reuters reported on Thursday the European Commission was set to act against Rome as part of a push against EU countries hampering bank consolidation in Europe, citing sources close to the matter.

Brussels will launch two separate legal proceedings under single market and merger rules respectively, the sources said.

The EU executive, which had already warned Italy that it could be breaching EU rules by vetting bank mergers through golden powers, declined to comment on the Reuters story but said it had received Italy’s replies in both cases.

“The Commission is currently assessing Italy’s response and will consider next steps,” a Commission spokesperson said.

The EU move was prompted by Italy’s intervention in a proposed bank merger involving the country’s second-biggest lender UniCredit, which withdrew its offer for smaller rival Banco BPM on July 22, blaming government interference.

Among several conditions for the deal to proceed, Italy had told UniCredit to halt activities in Russia by early 2026 in order to prevent savings collected by Banco BPM from funding Moscow’s war against Ukraine. Rome kept this decree in place despite the collapse of the deal.

The EU will order Italy to withdraw the decree that set terms for UniCredit’s failed bid, the sources said, while challenging the overall golden power legislation through a separate infringment procedure.

“When the EU’s remarks arrive, we will evaluate them. I am simply saying that the government is applying an effective law. If you want to change the law, it is up to parliament to do so,” Giorgetti said when asked about the Reuters report.

The EU Commission plans to send two letters to Italy by mid-November to launch its move, the sources added.

If the EU rules that the conditions imposed on UniCredit are unlawful, the bank will be able to assess whether to seek damages from Italy.

Giorgetti, however, signalled the government was ready to challenge the proceedings in an EU court.

RedBird Capital formally requests approval for acquisition of UK’s Telegraph

If approved, RedBird would take sole control of the broadsheet under a deal that values it at 500 million pounds

International News via Reuters:

RedBird Capital Partners on Friday formally requested approval from the British government to proceed with its proposed acquisition of The Telegraph, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters and confirmed by the U.S.-based investment firm.

If approved, RedBird would take sole control of the broadsheet under a deal that values it at 500 million pounds ($667.50 million), with Abu Dhabi-backed IMI participating as a minority investor. IMI’s stake will be capped at 15%, in line with UK legislation on foreign state-backed stakes.

Ownership of the Telegraph, a conservative-leaning newspaper, has been in flux since IMI initially acquired the newspaper and The Spectator magazine in 2023. The deal was later disrupted when the then government moved to ban foreign state investment in British newspapers, forcing a sale.

“This is an important step forward in the process as we look to end the uncertainty at the Telegraph,” RedBird said in its internal statement.

“Our conviction in the potential of the Telegraph has never wavered, despite the tremendous challenges all journalism endeavours face in the wake of artificial intelligence, social media news consumption and the ongoing technological disintermediation that threatens all intellectual property based businesses.”

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport confirmed it had received RedBird’s request but did not comment any further.

A Public Interest Intervention Notice was issued in January 2024 when RedBird Capital and IMI initially sought joint control. The current government’s decision to allow foreign state-owned investors to own up to 15% of UK newspaper publishers helped unlock the revised deal.

The move followed an outcry among some politicians over the independence of the media and whether foreign states would be able to buy political influence.

RedBird, founded in 2014, manages about $12 billion in assets globally. Its investments include AC Milan, Skydance Media and a pending merger with Paramount Global.
