‘Our journey towards self-determination remains essential and unfinished’

AG tells the UN that Bermuda’s progress toward self-determination requires broad education, open consultation, and consensus-building

AG Kim Wilkeron at the United Nations: “Bermuda is a territory that has shown it can govern itself with competence and stability.”

Press release:
Bermuda reaffirmed its democratic strength and ongoing commitment to self-determination on the international stage, as Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Hon. Kim Wilkerson, addressed the United Nations Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) on Tuesday.

In her remarks, the Attorney General highlighted Bermuda’s longstanding record of democratic governance, strong institutions, and economic resilience. She underscored the island’s ability to govern itself with competence and stability, noting that Bermuda’s parliamentary democracy entrusts elected representatives with responsibility for nearly all aspects of domestic governance.

“Bermuda is a small island territory of just over 64,000 residents, yet we have built a highly developed economy and stable institutions,” the Minister said.

“Our government functions on the basis of a parliamentary democracy, with elected representatives responsible for nearly all aspects of domestic governance.”

Attorney General Wilkerson emphasised Bermuda’s positive and constructive relationship with the United Kingdom, while acknowledging that the island’s journey toward self-determination remains “essential and unfinished.”

She noted that while the 2005 Bermuda Independence Commission laid important groundwork, further momentum has slowed in recent years.

Any future steps, she stressed, must be guided by broad public understanding and consensus, reflecting Bermuda’s commitment to democratic principles and respect for the will of its people.

“Progress toward self-determination requires broad education, open consultation, and consensus-building within Bermuda itself,” she stated.

“Our responsibility as leaders is to ensure that the people of Bermuda are fully informed of the options available, the implications of each, and the opportunities and responsibilities that self-determination entails.”

Reaffirming Bermuda’s commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, Minister Wilkerson concluded: “Bermuda is a territory that has shown it can govern itself with competence and stability.

“We remain committed to advancing this principle in a way that is inclusive, measured, and respectful of the will of our people.”

The Attorney General’s participation underscores Bermuda’s active engagement with the international community as it continues to chart its future path. The Government of Bermuda will continue to work with the United Nations and international partners in advancing a process that reflects the aspirations and informed choices of its people.

Bermuda Claims Gold, Silver and Bronze at Time Trial Championships

Bermuda’s elite cyclist winning race against time in Belize

Statement from the Bermuda Bicycle Association:

Bermuda’s cyclists delivered outstanding performances at today’s Caribbean Elite Time Trial Championships, claiming two podium finishes in the men’s event and a bronze in the women’s race.

Nicholas Narraway stormed to victory in his first year competing in the Elite category, taking gold and becoming the only rider to complete the 32.5 km course in under 40 minutes. Narraway stopped the clock at 39:25 (53.58 km/h average), securing Bermuda’s top step of the podium ahead of teammate Conor White, the defending champion, who finished second with a time of 40:12. Puerto Rico’s Christopher Morales rounded out the men’s podium, taking third in 41:17.

In the Elite Women’s 20.9 km event, Bermuda’s Gabriella Arnold earned bronze, finishing third behind Teniel Campbell of Trinidad & Tobago, who claimed gold, and Llori Sharpe of Jamaica, who took silver.

“It’s a fantastic day for Bermuda cycling,” said BBA President Peter Dunne. “To see Nic step up to the elite ranks and win in such dominant fashion, with Conor right behind him and Gabby back on the podium, speaks volumes about the depth of talent we’re developing.”

Team Manager Peter Dunne and Dominique Mayho (team mechanic) provided on-the-ground support for the riders in Belize, ensuring a smooth and successful competition.

Tomorrow, attention turns to the Caribbean Elite Road Race, where Bermuda’s riders will be joined by Kaden Hopkins and will line up against the region’s best. The road race starts and finishes in front of the MIRAB Furniture Gallery in Belize City. The course is fast and exposed, featuring long, flat stretches that test power and endurance more than climbing. Riders roll out toward Ladyville, turning through Airport and John Smith Roads before crossing toward Mile 8 Community and joining the George Price Highway, where strong crosswinds often play a decisive role. The circuit continues along the Hattieville Boom Road and Philip Goldson Highway, looping back to Airport Junction. The women will complete two laps (108 km) and the men three (156 km) — a course that rewards smart pacing, teamwork, and grit in the tropical heat.

Late Penalty Row as Dill’s Goal Not Enough for Southwell City

Bermudian footballers in action in the UK

Southwell City FC fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Pinxton FC, with a controversial late penalty decision denying the home side a potential equalizer.

Bermuda international Ayleal Dill had given Southwell hope, coolly converting a spot-kick after Pinxton had raced into a two-goal lead.

Despite dominating the second half, Southwell’s push for a leveller ended in fury when a late penalty appeal was waved away by the referee. Dill and his teammates were left to rue their missed opportunity to snatch a point.

Wilshere Closes in on Luton Town Manager Role

Jack Wilshere is reportedly on the cusp of his first permanent senior managerial job, with a deal to take charge of League One side Luton Town said to be “all but agreed.”

Sources indicate the former Arsenal and England midfielder, 33, has held successful talks at Kenilworth Road and is set to replace the recently departed Matt Bloomfield.

Wilshere, who has had coaching stints with Arsenal’s youth teams and as an interim manager at Norwich City, will take over a Luton side, which features Bermuda striker Nahki Wells, looking to reverse a poor start to their campaign in the third tier.

The move marks a significant step in Wilshere’s burgeoning coaching career.

Opinion: Rethinking dyslexia – supporting those who learn differently

NAB Third Sector Spotlight: The Reading Clinic

Images supplied.

By Tina Harris, Executive Director, The Reading Clinic

What do Daniel Radcliffe, Octavia Spencer, Lewis Hamilton, Walt Disney, and Richard Branson have in common? They’re all icons in their fields – and they all have dyslexia.

Dyslexia affects up to 20% of the global population. That’s one in five people. In Bermuda, that could mean more than 1,600 students are navigating school with brains wired to learn differently. Too often, these differences are unrecognised or misunderstood – leading to frustration, low confidence, and missed opportunities.

Dyslexia is not about low intelligence or lack of effort. It’s a neurological, language-based learning difference that impacts reading, writing and spelling. Matching sounds to letters and decoding words can be difficult, which in turn affects reading fluency and comprehension. With the right instruction and encouragement, students with dyslexia can achieve academic success, discover their strengths and thrive.

Since 1968, The Reading Clinic has been helping children unlock that potential. Founded by Elizabeth “Betty” Kitson, the Clinic’s mission has been to ensure that children in Bermuda, regardless of background, have access to the support they need to unlock their full potential. What began as a small community-driven effort has evolved into a vital community institution now offering four specialised services to address dyslexia, math-related learning differences, and the diagnosis of learning differences.

  • Core Reading Programme – Using the gold-standard Orton-Gillingham approach, 40 trained tutors deliver over 80 one-on-one sessions each year to more than 110 students with dyslexia, helping rewire the brain for reading and spelling success.

  • ICAN Programme – Specialised, hands-on numeracy support for children significantly struggling with maths, serving 56 students last year with tailored instruction from 25 instructors.

  • I-PLAY Programme – Early intervention in seven public preschools, building essential pre-literacy skills in over 120 children annually through songs, stories, and games.

  • Diagnostic Testing Service – Comprehensive assessments and recommendations to ensure no child is left behind due to an unidentified learning difference.

These programmes are designed to be accessible, but they come at a cost as they require one-on-one support with specialised tutors.  And thanks to generous donors, The Reading Clinic is able to subsidize fees to keep session affordable. Further support is available with tiered financial assistance for those with demonstrated need ensuring every family – regardless of income – can access the help their child needs.

The stakes are too high. Without diagnosis and support, children with learning differences face increased risks of anxiety, depression, bullying, school disengagement and even incarceration. In Bermuda, a 1999 study found that 28% of incarcerated individuals were functionally illiterate. Yet when supported early and consistently, students with dyslexia often become innovators, leaders, and creative thinkers. Parents tell us their children’s self-esteem has soared, that homework is no longer a nightly battle, and that their family life has been transformed.

At The Reading Clinic, we believe every child should understand how their brain works – and feel empowered by it. Dyslexia isn’t a deficit. It’s a different way of thinking that needs to be celebrated. People with dyslexia bring incredible strengths to the table: visual-spatial thinking, big-picture reasoning, creativity, innovation, problem-solving skills and resilience. They are the scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, and artists of tomorrow. When we recognise their potential and give them the tools to succeed, we all benefit.

The Loren Group to breathe new life into Elbow Beach

Luxury brand unveils $150–$200 million redevelopment set to open in 2029

The Loren Group issued the following press release.

The Loren Group has expanded its global footprint with the acquisition of the iconic Elbow Beach Hotel and Fritholme Garden Residences in Bermuda, a landmark property situated on Bermuda’s picturesque southern shore. This strategic acquisition underscores The Loren’s commitment to expanding its luxury hospitality and residential footprint and enhancing Bermuda’s hospitality landscape. The Loren at Pink Beach, which opened in 2017, has been the marquee, luxury property in Bermuda, raising the bar for contemporary hospitality on the island. This expansion is a direct result of the brand’s success, in Bermuda and at The Loren Austin, which opened in 2022 and has seen a steady increase in both occupancy and ADR YoY, and sold out all 24 residential units in its pre construction phase. The Loren at Turtle Cove in Turks and Caicos will open in early 2027 and has sold the majority of available real estate, including the highest recorded sale to date at $19.5 million on the island, that sits alongside a five-star luxury hotel experience. With the addition of Elbow Beach, The Loren brand now controls over $300 million in hospitality and real estate assets across Bermuda, Turks & Caicos, and additional holdings.

“Acquiring the historic Elbow Beach Resort in Bermuda is a key part of our brand vision to rejuvenate properties that blend a storied past with The Loren’s signature style to create an unparalleled destination for both locals and visitors in desirable locations,” says Stephen King, CEO & Founder of The Loren Group. “This deal is a testament to our roots in Bermuda and the growing demand for The Loren brand following the successful opening of Austin and looking ahead to our next luxury project, The Loren at Turtle Cove. Our model of offering investment opportunities through residential units within a luxury hotel environment and amenities has proven to be an expandable and relevant model.”

The Elbow Beach Resort, which has remained closed since early 2020, has been a beloved fixture in Bermuda for over a century. The Loren is working hand-in-hand with the Government of Bermuda on planning, environmental stewardship, and employment opportunities with a focus on a mix of worldclass design, local integration, and a commitment to elevating Bermuda’s global tourism offering through the acquisition. The Loren expects to create more than 150 new job opportunities to fuel the local economy and has worked closely with Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, local church organizations, and the ASPCA Dining & Amenities organization to donate furniture and equipment preserved from the original property.

Site plan of The Loren at Elbow Beach. Image supplied.

The Loren Group plans to undertake a comprehensive, $150 – $200 million-dollar redevelopment of the property to showcase its natural, vast water views including an uninterrupted stretch of ocean that spans over a mile wide and as far as the eye can see. Further details around the 75-room hotel and 27 residences, a mix of Estate homes and cottage-style accommodations that blend harmoniously with the landscape, will be shared in the coming months and will deliver a world class mix of luxury real estate, an expansion of the Loren Hotel style, restaurants, spa, member and wellness facilities, reflecting the brand’s “uncompromising by nature” ethos. Initial plans do include a chic rooftop restaurant, inspired by Nido, the brand’s celebrated rooftop restaurant at The Loren Austin, a culinary destination rooted in a philosophy of sourcing ingredients from local farmers to create internationally-inspired dishes and experiences that bring people together, including the Loren’s annual Guest Chef Series. Staying true to the property’s celebrated history, Mickey’s will return as a revitalized and stunning beach club restaurant honoring the beloved original with unrivaled views.

The new Elbow Beach property will serve as the Loren brand’s flagship and a representation of the group’s future five-year strategy which focuses on the redevelopment of iconic sites, the development of branded residences and villa sales as a core offering and revenue stream and expansion to select international destinations while maintaining exclusivity in location and design integrity. The newlyimagined Loren at Elbow Beach is expected to open in 2029, with residential villas and cottages offered at $2.5–20 million, depending on size and location on the land. Pre-sales have begun with strong interest from both Bermudian buyers and international investors, with early commitments already representing a significant portion of the first phase of inventory.

Continuing The Loren’s commitment to sustainability, the new property will establish composting partnerships with Pink Beach and Yard Farm and preservation of natural vegetation will remain paramount, in line with the brand’s approach to deliver understated luxury through a sustainable lens. The Loren Elbow Beach will also join The Loren at Pink Beach and The Loren at Lady Bird Lake in participating in the brand’s Roots Initiative, a program designed to capture carbon through biodiverse reafforestation.

The Loren Group’s current portfolio includes two operating properties. The Loren at Pink Beach was recently added to the official Michelin Hotel Guide and The Loren at Lady Bird Lake in Austin, overlooking Lady Bird Lake and Ziller Park, continues to see repeat guests and loyalists who appreciate the design-led hospitality and experiences exclusive to The Loren brand including ongoing culinary-pop ups at The Loren Cafe, immersive wine and spirits tastings and rotating art exhibitions at the iconic Paggi House. The Loren at Turtle Cove in Turks and Caicos is set to open in early 2027 with The Loren at Elbow Beach to follow. The team is actively vetting additional locations for expansion across the US, Caribbean, Europe and beyond. For more information, please visit The Loren Hotels website.

BELCO report pole fire and downed power line

Residents are asked to avoid Montpelier Road

BELCO outage map as of 10 am, Saturday, October 11

More than 1,000 customers are without power this morning, most of them in Pembroke, where BELCO crews are responding to a downed power line.

In a statement to social media, BELCO said it is “aware of pocket outages scattered across the island due to high winds and overgrown vegetation.”

“Our crew is currently addressing a downed power line on Montpelier Road and a pole fire in the Fractious Street area,” the company said. “Once these emergency situations have been addressed, our team will begin working on the remaining pocket outages.”

According to BELCO, crews responded to the Fractious Street pole fire last night, which initially knocked out power to 1,310 customers. As of this morning, power has been restored to some areas, with 848 customers still without electricity.

BELCO has asked the public to avoid Montpelier Road and to use caution when driving, walking, or riding near crews in other restoration areas.

“The safety of our crew, the public, and all motorists is paramount,” the company added.

Customers affected by outages are reminded to unplug sensitive equipment and electronics until power is restored.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS), strong east-northeasterly winds reached near-gale force overnight with gusts up to 45 knots in exposed/elevated areas. Conditions are expected to remain windy and showery through the day as a frontal boundary lingers in the area, with possible improvement by evening as winds ease.

Meanwhile, forecasters continue to monitor Tropical Storm Jerry, which poses a potential threat but is expected to pass well to the east of the island.

As of the 6 am advisory, the BWS said Jerry’s nearest forecasted point to Bermuda is 165 nm to the ESE at 3 pm on Sunday.

“It is worth noting that confidence in the long range track of Jerry passing comfortably to the E of BDA later this
weekend is increasing, minimising any direct impacts other than perhaps some long period SE’ly swell most likely on Sunday,” the BWS stated.
