UK grocery inflation hits highest level since March 2024, says Kantar

Tesco says that new employer taxes and regulatory costs were adding to inflationary pressure

International news via Reuters:

British grocery price inflation rose to 4.7% for the four weeks to June 15, its highest level since March last year, dealing another blow for low-income households, data from market researcher Kantar showed on Tuesday.

The figure, which compared to 4.1% in last month’s report, was driven by price rises in products such as chocolate, butter and meat, Kantar said.

Market leader Tesco said earlier this month that new employer taxes and regulatory costs were adding to inflationary pressure at a time when commodity prices were rising.

Industry researcher the Institute of Grocery Distribution has forecast that food inflation could hit nearly 5% this year.

Data from Asda and the Centre for Economics and Business Research, published on Monday, showed that while average real disposable income is rising in the UK, the lowest-earning 40% now have less spending power than they did in 2021.

“Consumer concerns over price are continuing, and this is reflected in the figures. Sales of own label ranges grew at 4.2% this month, ahead of branded lines, as shoppers looked to balance their budgets,” Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said.

Kantar said grocery sales in value terms increased 4.1% year-on-year over the four weeks, helped by warm weather.

However, it said when inflation was taken into account grocery volumes fell 0.4% – the first year-on-year decline this year.

Tesco, number two player Sainsbury’s, discounter Lidl and online supermarket Ocado were the standout performers over the 12 weeks to June 15 with year-on-year sales gains of 7.0%, 5.7%, 11.2% and 12.2% respectively.

Number three player Asda remained the industry laggard with a sales decline of 1.7%, though its performance is on an improving trend.

Kantar said spending on groceries at cyberattack hit Marks & Spencer rose 12.0%, though the retailer is not included in its market share data set.

UK may compel Google to change search rankings to ensure fair competition

More than 200,000 businesses depended on Google search advertising to reach their customers

International news via Reuters:

Britain’s competition regulator said it may force Google to rank businesses more fairly in search results, marking the first use of expanded powers to oversee the world’s biggest tech companies.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is proposing to designate Alphabet-owned Google with “strategic market status”, it said on Tuesday, giving it more power to intervene in search services to increase innovation and economic growth.

If confirmed in October, the designation could compel Google to enhance transparency for publishers, simplify access to rival search services and facilitate data portability for competitors.

CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said Google, which accounts for more than 90% of search queries in Britain, had delivered tremendous benefits but the regulator had found ways to make markets more competitive and innovative.

“These targeted and proportionate actions would give UK businesses and consumers more choice and control over how they interact with Google’s search services – as well as unlocking greater opportunities for innovation across the UK tech sector and broader economy,” she said.

Millions of Britons relied on Google as a gateway to the internet and more than 200,000 businesses depended on Google search advertising to reach their customers, the regulator said.

The CMA, which gained global prominence when Britain left the European Union, aims to use its expanded power to rein in the power of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Meta and Microsoft without stifling investment or growth.

The CMA’s targeted approach contrasts with the EU’s broader enforcement of digital regulations, as Britain seeks to balance curbing the dominance of tech giants with fostering economic growth post-Brexit.

NEW POWERS

Cardell said the CMA had set out a roadmap of changes the company could make ahead of a final decision in October.

Google said on Tuesday that the CMA’s SMS designation did not imply anti-competitive behaviours, but that its announcement presented clear challenges to critical areas of its business in Britain.

“We’re concerned that the scope of the CMA’s considerations remains broad and unfocused, with a range of interventions being considered before any evidence has been provided,” said Oliver Bethell, Google’s senior director for competition.

The CMA said it planned further action to address more complex issues, starting in 2026, such as concerns about Google’s treatment of rival specialised search firms and transparency and control in search advertising.

The regulator’s second investigation under its new powers into mobile operating systems also targets Google, as well as Apple. It could see the company receive another designation focused on its Android operating system.

The CMA can impose fines for non-compliance and has direct enforcement powers.

Google has been subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny in the United States and the European Union, spanning search, advertising, AI, and digital platform practices.

Over the past year it was found to have monopolised search and online ads in two major U.S. rulings, and it was charged in March by the European Commission with breaching landmark EU digital rules.

Amazon to invest $54 billion in Britain over next three years

Its plan includes building two new state-of-the-art fulfilment centres in the East Midlands

International news via Reuters:

Amazon has deepened its commitment to Britain, with the e-commerce giant saying it plans to invest 40 billion pounds ($54 billion) over the next three years, a move the UK government hailed as a vote of confidence in its economic policies.

Elected in 2024, the Labour government has made boosting Britain’s anaemic growth a priority and wants to see a step up in foreign investment.

Amazon said on Tuesday its expansion in Britain, its third biggest market after the United States and Germany, would create thousands of jobs. It currently employs 75,000 in the UK, making it a top ten private sector employer.

Its plan includes building two new state-of-the-art fulfilment centres in the East Midlands, central England, expected to open in 2027, as well as previously announced new centres in Hull, northern England, and Northampton, central England, that will open this year and next year respectively.

The Hull and Northampton sites will each create 2,000 jobs.

Amazon also plans new delivery stations across the UK, upgrades and expansions to its existing network of over 100 operations buildings, investment to enhance its transport infrastructure, two new buildings at its corporate headquarters in London and the redevelopment of the Bray Film Studios in Berkshire, southern England.

The 40 billion pounds figure includes part of the 8 billion pounds announced by Amazon’s cloud computing arm in September 2024 for building, operating, and maintaining data centres in the UK from 2024 to 2028. It also includes salaries for Amazon employees.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government on Monday detailed its industrial strategy, said Amazon’s plans represented “a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business.”

On Friday, Britain’s grocery regulator launched an investigation into Amazon, probing whether it breached rules on timely supplier payments.

Phillips Bags First ATP Win After Davis Cup High

Daniel Phillips wins ATP title in Turkey

Bermudian tennis talent Daniel Phillips has wasted no time building on his recent Davis Cup heroics, clinching his first professional ATP Tour victory at the M15 Kayseri tournament in Turkey.

Fresh from helping Bermuda secure a historic promotion in the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs, Phillips entered the qualifying rounds of the M15 event. He faced Russia’s Venedikt Tsirikidze, the 11th seed in the qualifiers, in a hard-fought encounter. Phillips displayed remarkable composure and resilience, triumphing in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6, in what he personally described as “a war on the court.”

This breakthrough win marks a crucial step in Phillips’s burgeoning professional career. He will now look to carry this momentum into the second round of qualifiers, where he is set to take on Aleksandre Shvangiradze from Georgia. This win on the ITF Men’s World Tennis Tour is a significant milestone, demonstrating Phillips’s potential as he aims to climb the professional rankings.

Bermuda Archers Secure Medal and CAC Qualification at Copa Merengue

Camerin Pickering claims historic bronze medal in the Dominican Republic

Bermuda’s archers have wrapped up a highly successful campaign at the Copa Merengue in the Dominican Republic. This significant event, which ran concurrently with a qualification tournament for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, saw the island’s contingent secure a historic Bronze Medal and ensure representation at the upcoming Games.

Three Bermudian archers impressively finished in the top eight of their respective divisions in the qualification event, a testament to their strong performances against top regional talent.

In the Men’s Recurve Division, Camerin Pickering was the standout performer. He secured a well-deserved Bronze Medal by defeating Daniel Ragbir from Trinidad and Tobago with a decisive 6-4 score in the bronze medal match. This pivotal result also confirms that Bermuda has secured an individual spot in the Men’s Recurve Division for the 2026 CAC Games. His teammate, Jaydon Roberts, also had a commendable showing, finishing 8th overall in the same division.

In the Ladies Recurve Division, Robin Selley showcased her consistency throughout the tournament, ultimately securing a strong 6th place overall finish.

Also representing Bermuda in the Dominican Republic were Elektra Smith, N’Drera Smith, and Robert O’Connor, all of whom gained invaluable international experience.

The successful outing at Copa Merengue, particularly the bronze medal and the CAC Games qualification, marks a significant milestone for Bermudian archery and provides a strong foundation for continued development leading into the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.

Therapeutic group aims to empower teens

The Family Centre’s Girl Code, open for registration, aims to equip teen girls with the building blocks for positive self-esteem, coping skills, healthy relationships, and emotional regulation

The Family Centre today issued the following media release.

Family Centre is pleased to announce the return of Girl Code, a therapeutic group designed to empower
and support teen girls in navigating the challenges of adolescence. The group will take place from
Monday, July 21 through Friday, July 25, 2025, from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm daily at Family Centre’s
premises.

Now in its second year, Girl Code is tailored for girls ages 14 to 16 and offers a safe space to explore
critical topics such as self-esteem, mental health, and relationships. The group is facilitated by clinically
trained staff who provide therapeutic support, with sessions focusing on emotional regulation, self-expression, problem-solving strategies, and healthy coping skills. Discussions will be brought to life through creative arts, group activities, and fun, engaging experiences.

Rishèe Paschal, Counselling Team Leader at Family Centre, shared: “The response from last year’s
participants and their families was incredibly encouraging. Parents observed significant positive changes
in their daughters, and many expressed a desire for more sessions to be offered. When girls are given a
safe space to express themselves, their confidence grows, and they begin to make more thoughtful,
empowered choices.”

Feedback from the group’s 2024 participants echoes this impact. In exit surveys, 100% of the participants
said they enjoyed the group and found it to be a valuable space to express their feelings and learn new
skills. One teen reflected: “I learned that different people go through the same things I do.”

Other participants highlighted takeaways such as learning the building blocks for positive self-esteem,
coping skills, healthy relationships, and how to manage intense feelings.

This year’s sessions will continue to address sensitive and important subject matters such as identity, self-worth, and relationships with compassion and clinical care. The programme increases self-awareness, helps build a positive sense of identity and self-worth, and promotes healthy decision making in relationships.

Participation is offered at no cost, thanks to the generosity of Family Centre’s donors. A donation of $130
per attendee is encouraged to support the cost of materials and supplies for the group.

To register your child, call 232-1116 and ask for the on-call screener. Spaces are limited and registration
is required.

Girl Code is offered as part of Family Centre’s ongoing commitment to supporting Bermuda’s children,
teens, and families through accessible mental health services, outreach enrichment programmes and
advocacy initiatives.
