UK grocery inflation hits highest level in 15 months, says Kantar

Grocery sales over the four weeks, meanwhile, rose 4.4% year-on-year

International news via Reuters:

British grocery price inflation jumped to 4.1% for the four weeks to May 18, its highest level since February last year, adding to pressure on consumers already facing higher household bills, data from market researcher Kantar showed on Wednesday.

The figure compared to grocery inflation of 3.8% in last month’s report and reflects the cost of supermarkets’ higher payroll taxes and an increase in the national minimum wage, which came into effect in April.

Industry researcher the Institute of Grocery Distribution has forecast that food inflation could hit nearly 5% this year.

Grocery sales over the four weeks, meanwhile, rose 4.4% year-on-year.

“Households have been adapting their buying habits to manage budgets for some time, but we typically see changes in behaviour once inflation tips beyond the 3% to 4% point as people notice the impact on their wallets more,” said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar.

Kantar said prices were rising fastest in chocolate confectionery, suncare and butters and spreads and were falling fastest in pet food and household paper products.

Market leader Tesco continued its strong sales run with growth of 5.9% year-on-year over the 12 weeks to May 18. Number two player Sainsbury’s sales were up 4.7%, Kantar’s data showed.

Number three Asda remained the industry laggard with sales down 3.2% and a 90 basis points loss of market share over the year. However, its performance was its best since May last year.

Discounters Aldi and Lidl achieved their strongest combined growth since January 2024 at 8.4%, while online supermarket Ocado marked a full year as Britain’s fastest growing grocer, with sales up 14.9%.

Despite enduring a cyberattack, Marks & Spencer’s sales rose by 12.3%, Kantar said.

Thompson Named Trojans Director of Methodology

Football

Somerset Cricket Club, a name synonymous with sporting heritage in Bermuda, are taking significant steps to revive their football fortunes. Following a period that has fallen short of their high standards, the club has announced the appointment of Kenny Thompson to the newly created role of Director of Methodology. This strategic move comes after a thorough analysis of the recent 2024/25 season.

The club believes that now is the opportune moment to put this crucial piece of the puzzle in place, with the clear aim of re-establishing “Silver City” – the nickname for Somerset – as a perennial powerhouse in Bermudian football.

Richard A Scott, the President of Somerset Cricket Club, Inc., expressed his delight at the appointment, stating, “We are indeed pleased that Kenny has accepted the appointment, and we look forward to his indelible mark – a renowned scholar, teacher and master of the game, being etched in the annals of SCC Football history.”

The driving force behind this move has been Football Chairman Dennis Lister III, who, in collaboration with Director of Football Danvers Seymour Jr and the Football Committee, worked diligently to convince Thompson to make a “return home.”

Kenny Thompson is no stranger to Somerset Cricket Club. While he has spent many years involved in footballing matters east of the club’s 6 Cricket Lane address, his roots run deep at SCC. He was a prominent and dynamic midfielder for the Trojans, Somerset’s football team, throughout the 1980s and 90s.

The club is clearly excited about the professional flair and acumen that Thompson brings to this new role. Football Chairman Dennis Lister III believes that this appointment will yield significant benefits in the long term, describing it as an investment in the future success of the team.

As the 2024/25 season has recently concluded, Somerset Cricket Club are now firmly focused on a robust pre-season in preparation for what they hope will be a profitable and successful 2025/26 campaign and beyond. The club is clearly delighted to have secured the “football intellectual capital” of Kenny Thompson as they embark on the road to re-establishing “Silver City” at the pinnacle of Bermudian football.

A significant appointment as Somerset look to reignite their footballing prowess. We’ll have more updates from the local football scene as the new season approaches.

White Finishes Strongly in Stage Four of Tour de la Manche

Cycling

Bermudian cyclist Conor White is nearing the end of his participation in the demanding 2025 Tour de la Manche, a gruelling five-day stage race across the Normandy region of northern France. Yesterday saw the peloton tackle the significant 165.6-kilometre fourth stage, a testing route between Saint-Jean-d’Elle and Sourdeval.

The stage victory provided a home triumph for local rider Clément Guilbert, who secured his first Elite win after a strong ride, crossing the line in 4 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds.

White, representing Muc-Off-SRCT-Storck, put in a commendable performance on this challenging day. He finished in a respectable 44th place, clocking a time of 4 hours, 3 minutes, and 50 seconds. Notably, White was just 14 seconds behind the stage winner Guilbert, demonstrating his ability to stay within touching distance of the leading riders in the peloton.

With just one stage remaining in the Tour de la Manche, White’s consistent efforts throughout the race, culminating in this strong showing on Stage Four, will be a positive indicator as he aims to improve his overall general classification in this prestigious French event. The narrow gap to the stage winner suggests White is finishing the race in good form.

Bermuda Bowlers Aim for CAC Games Qualification

Bowling

Bermuda’s National Men’s Bowling Team are embarking on a crucial mission this week, as they travel to the Dominican Republic for the Central American and Caribbean Bowling Confederation Championships. This prestigious tournament, running from June 1st to June 8th, holds the key to qualification for the next CAC Games.

The experienced six-man squad features a blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent, including David Maycock, Damien Matthews, Dayvon Tucker, Michael Honore, Jamel Bean, and Blake Raynor. They will be competing across the singles, doubles, trios, and team events, with each discipline featuring six qualifying games to determine the medallists.

The stakes are high, with the combined scores of the top five bowlers from each nation deciding which nine countries will join the automatically qualified host nation at the next CAC Games.

Bermuda’s team brings a wealth of international experience to the lanes. Maycock and Tucker were part of the national team that reached the last 16 at the Bowling World Cup earlier this year. Matthews and Maycock also have a proven track record at the CAC Games, having secured a silver medal in the men’s trios back in 2018.

With their blend of youth and seasoned expertise, the Bermuda National Men’s Bowling Team will be aiming to draw upon their past successes and deliver strong performances in the Dominican Republic, hoping to secure a coveted spot for the island at the next CAC Games.

Tough Start for Bermuda Teams at USA Volleyball Open

Volleyball

Bermuda’s volleyball teams have faced a challenging start to the prestigious 2025 USA Volleyball Open National Championship in Denver, Colorado. Both the Devil’s Isle Women’s squad and the Ace Boyz, competing in the highly competitive BB Divisions, endured a tough opening day against strong opposition from across the United States and beyond.

The Devil’s Isle Women’s team, placed in Group 9, faced a difficult opener against Mission Unblockable, falling in straight sets. Their subsequent matches against the Angry Beavers and the Rusty Ol Bolts also resulted in defeats, the latter going to a tight three-set battle.

Meanwhile, the Ace Boyz in the Men’s BB Division also had a challenging start. They fell in straight sets to the Gobblers in their opening match and were then edged out in a close three-set encounter against the Summit 40’s.

However, the Ace Boyz showed resilience in their Round 1b Crossover Matches, securing a straight-sets victory over AAV. Unfortunately, their second crossover match saw them fall in a hard-fought three-set battle against Lake Effect.

While the initial results have been challenging for both the Devil’s Isle Women and the Ace Boyz, the U.S. Open provides invaluable experience against some of the best adult volleyball teams in the world. The Bermuda teams will be aiming to regroup, learn from these opening matches, and showcase their talent as the tournament continues in Denver.

Crichlow Turns Down Clarets Deal to Join Sutton United

Football

Bermuda international midfielder Kane Crichlow is on the move, Chelmsford City have confirmed that Crichlow has turned down the offer of a new contract with the club.

The talented midfielder, who joined the Clarets in July last year after a successful trial, quickly established himself as a key player at Melbourne Community Stadium. Crichlow made a significant impact, featuring in 44 appearances across all competitions and netting a valuable 14 goals throughout the 2024-25 season.

His consistent performances earned him widespread recognition at the club’s end-of-season awards. In a clean sweep, Crichlow was voted the Players’ Player of the Season by his teammates, named the Manager’s Player of the Season by Robbie Simpson, and also claimed the coveted Fans’ Player of the Season award, highlighting the strong connection he forged with the Chelmsford City supporters.

Despite Chelmsford City’s clear desire to retain his services, Crichlow has opted to take a step up the footballing ladder. He has signed for National League side Sutton United, offering him an opportunity to compete at a higher level of the English game.

Chelmsford City will undoubtedly be disappointed to lose a player of Crichlow’s quality after his impressive season. However, the club has wished him well as he embarks on this new chapter in his career with Sutton United in the National League.
