Interschool Cricket: Showdown between 2025 Tea Cup Challenge Winner, Cedarbridge, and Saltus
In interschool cricket, CedarBridge Academy has flipped the script on Saltus Grammar, avenging last year’s defeat in the inaugural Skyport Tea Cup Challenge. Now, they head to Saltus tomorrow for the Knock-out Cup. 18-year-old CedarBridge student Daejun Butterfield shares how his team turned things around — and why cricket offers lessons that go far beyond the pitch.
The Tea Cup Challenge was the brainchild of CedarBridge maintenance supervisor and cricket enthusiast Davon Govia. While he’s not a PE teacher, Govia is proud to see his love for the game inspiring more young people to pick up a bat and ball.

Bermuda’s Under-14 Girls’ National Football team have learned their group for the 2025 Caribbean Football Union Challenge Series. The tournament, hosted in Trinidad and Tobago this August, will see Bermuda compete in Tier I, the top tier of the competition.
They have been drawn into Group A alongside Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Martinique. The group stage will be a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the semi-finals.
It’s a challenging group for Bermuda’s young squad as they aim for success in the CFU Challenge Series.
Bermudian midfielder Djair Parfitt was in action for FC Haka as they faced a tough encounter against the reigning Finnish champions. Despite a battling effort from Haka at Tehtaas Stadium, the league leaders proved too strong, securing a 3-1 victory. Parfitt played his part in the midfield but couldn’t prevent the champions from taking the points.
Meanwhile, in Denmark, goalkeeper Nathan Trott was an unused substitute for F.C. Copenhagen as they moved closer to the Superliga title. Copenhagen delivered a commanding 4-0 away win against Randers in their penultimate game of the season, leaving them in a strong position to clinch the league crown with just one match remaining.
A sensational debut has seen Henryk Marszalek crowned the Bermuda Open snooker champion. The newcomer pulled off a stunning clean sweep in the final, defeating seasoned campaigner and former champion John Orr 4-0 in a dominant display at Watford Sports Club.
Marszalek, who only recently tasted team success in the league, showed remarkable composure to secure the prestigious title in his very first season, a feat not seen since 2017.
Meanwhile, the Bermuda Open Doubles tournament is also progressing. Todd Dziak and Nadanja Bailey have advanced to the semi-finals after a comfortable 2-0 victory in their quarter-final clash. They now await their opponents as the doubles competition continues to unfold.
Bermudian motorcycle racer Aeziah Divine has completed the opening round of the 2025 R&G British Talent Cup season at Donington Park. The weekend proved a learning experience for the young rider.
Despite a challenging qualifying session that saw him start 23rd, Divine showed his fighting spirit in Race 1, improving to finish 21st. Race 2 saw a good start hampered by an incident, but Divine battled back to finish 17th and set a personal best lap time.
Divine remains positive about the season ahead, focusing on the areas for improvement identified during the weekend.
The special assembly is the first of its kind under the National Security Ministry’s ongoing recruitment campaign

The Government of Bermuda today issued the following media release.
This week, the Ministry of National Security visited Cedarbridge Academy to encourage students to consider future careers in Bermuda’s uniformed services.
Held in the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, the special assembly marked the first school-based presentation of its kind under the Ministry’s ongoing recruitment campaign, which aims to inspire more residents, especially young Bermudians, to “step up, take the challenge” and pursue meaningful service to the community.
Students heard directly from uniformed service representatives who spoke about their careers, shared personal insights, and discussed the training and commitment required to succeed in the roles.
The Ministry described the event as a success, noting the students’ attentiveness and their positive engagement with the speakers.
Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Weeks, JP, MP, who attended the event, said it was vital that Bermuda’s young people are given clear pathways and encouragement to explore public service.
He said the visit to Cedarbridge was about planting a seed early. “We cannot wait until someone finishes school or returns from college before we talk to them about service,” he said.
“We need to start in the schools. These students are at a turning point in life, and this is when they need to hear that a career in the uniformed services is not just a job but a way to grow, lead, and give back.”
Minister Weeks added that reaching young people face-to-face is part of a larger goal to promote service value across all age groups.
“If even one student walked out thinking, ‘I could see myself doing that,’ then we are heading in the right direction,” he said.
“But I also want adults, parents, and older Bermudians looking for purpose or a new path to know that opportunities exist for them too. I am encouraging all residents—young and older—to visit gov.bm/uniformedservices and to continue to check the job advertisements, because each service recruits at different times and those chances can go quickly.”
He said the campaign is not just about filling vacancies but building a generation of public servants who feel proud of their work.
“We need good people in these roles. People who care. People who want to make a difference. This campaign is about reminding our people that service to your country is still one of the most honourable choices you can make.”
The Ministry confirmed that further outreach to young people is being planned to ensure the next generation is informed, inspired, and ready to serve.

Last week (May 15), the Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Alexa Lightbourne, JP, MP, was pleased to have an opportunity to meet with the newly appointed US Consul General, Ms. Antoinette Hurtado.
The meeting underscored the enduring relationship between Bermuda and the US covering a range of topics of mutual interest. We are excited about the potential for continued collaboration with the United States on educational and energy initiatives. These partnerships are vital for the growth and development of Bermuda, and we look forward to building on our strong relationship with the US.”
