Firefighters tackle late night blaze; no injuries reported
An investigation is ongoing after a blaze erupted at the Airport Waste Management Facility in St. George’s over the weekend.
Just after 11 pm on Saturday, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted by a member of the public who reported seeing smoke and flames in the area of the airport waste treatment facility.
Fire crews from the Clearwater station were immediately dispatched.
A BFRS spokesman explained: “Firefighters encountered a fire involving refuse materials near the water’s edge, measuring approximately 40 by 40 feet. Firefighters operating in breathing apparatus worked vigorously to safely manage the conditions.
“Additional resources were deployed … and an excavator machine was later utilized to assist with the control of the burning debris to ensure full extinguishment.”
The fire was brought under control and fully extinguished at around 1:15 am, with crews clearing the scene shortly afterwards.
There were no reported injuries.
The BFRS is working with the facility’s operators to determine the cause of the fire.
The site accepts metal waste, rubble, appliances, tyres, and construction and demolition debris.
