Dickinson: All Bermudians should benefit from our ‘economic miracle’

Curtis Dickinson, PLP leadership hopeful, says Bermuda’s success is ‘not just about GDP… whether we’re in surplus or deficit…’, but about giving Bermudians the ability to ‘live their best lives’

Bermuda is an “economic miracle”, says Curtis Dickinson… but “all Bermudians have not benefited from that economic miracle”.

When asked about his vision for Bermuda, the PLP leadership contender said “we need to do a better job of ensuring that the spoils of our success as a jurisdiction extend to all Bermudians.”

Whether individuals want to be insurance executives, doctors, lawyers or tradespeople, he says “we should be creating a country where people can be who they want to be, and do so successfully…

“It’s not about just about GDP, new company registrations, whether we’re in surplus or deficit…

“Those things are important, but we need to create a place where people can have access to opportunity and live their best lives, whatever that looks like for the individual.”

Curtis Dickinson spoke about his vision for both Bermuda and the Progressive Labour Party in part 2 of his interview with Gary Foster Skelton (WATCH above…).

He also addressed the question of whether some may perceive that he betrayed the party by taking them to court, and bringing in an unprecedented number of new members during his leadership campaign.

He reiterated that the legal action he and four other plaintiffs took was to ensure that the PLP’s constitution was being interpreted correctly, adding that the rights of more than 2000 new members were being put at risk by the addenda tabled and passed by the Central Committee in August.

“That’s not fair”, Mr Dickinson said.

“If I’m going to be criticized for stopping unfairness, I will take that criticism any day.”
