Bermudian Olympian Tyler Smith produced a devastating final-leg charge to secure a brilliant fifth-place finish in the elite men’s race at the Europe Triathlon Cup in Ceuta.
Smith stopped the clock in 52 minutes three seconds over the sprint-distance course, navigating a high-calibre international field to capture a prized top-five result.
The 28-year-old laid the foundations for his assault in the opening 750-metre swim, exiting the water in 8:09 with the 19th fastest split to keep the leading pack within sight.
A disciplined showing followed across the technical 19.7-kilometre bike section, where Smith clocked 27:12—the 14th best split—to keep himself in contention entering the second transition.
It was on the concluding 5,000-metre run where the Bermudian made his decisive impact. Unleashing the fifth-fastest run split of the day in a scorching 15:12, Smith powered past several rivals down the home straight to cap an outstanding afternoon on the European circuit.
Christine Dailey produced an authoritative front-running performance to capture the PartnerRe Women’s 5k Run and Walk title, while Mylah DeSilva edged a dramatic photo finish to claim top honours in the 2k division.
Dailey controlled the feature 5,000-metre race from gun to tape, breaking clear of the field to stop the clock in 18 minutes 54.84 seconds. Her commanding rhythm carried her across the line nearly a full minute ahead of runner-up Brooklyn Myers, who took second in 19:47.39. Stepanka Sprincova followed closely in 19:50.84 to round out the podium, while under-14 winner Evelyn Fahy (20:01.45) and veteran competitor Rose-Anna Hoey (20:43.95) completed the top five.
The companion 2k race delivered the morning’s most thrilling finish as DeSilva and Madeleine Friend went stride-for-stride down the home straight. DeSilva snatched victory by mere hundredths of a second, clocking 7:11.38 to pip Friend (7:11.47) at the line. Izzy Stevens topped the 7-10 division for third overall in 7:18.36, ahead of Vivienne Fox (7:33.37) and Ella Kent (7:38.86).
Max Curtis and crew Wesley Tucker continued their fine form on the water, claiming overall honours at the Ace Installers Regatta in St George’s Harbour.
A six-boat fleet contested the East End regatta, but Curtis and Tucker set the benchmark early. Demonstrating supreme consistency across the four-race card, the pair clinched the title with a winning low score of four points, courtesy of two race victories, a second, and a third.
Alan Frith and crew Laila Frith mounted a determined pursuit to secure second place overall on seven points. The duo combined a race win with three third-place finishes to comfortably lock down the runners-up spot.
Scott Fox and Sarah Frith rounded out the podium in third with eight points. Despite counting a fifth and a sixth, their opening victory and a second-place finish kept them firmly in the silverware mix.
Bermudian riders Aeziah Divine and Jediah Cumbermack secured solid results amid fierce pack racing as their weekend concluded at Donington Park.
Divine, lining up for Fibre Tec Honda-By MLav Racing in the R&G MOTO4 British Cup, earned a brace of 12th-place finishes across two demanding 14-lap contests. The 16-year-old clocked 23:30.029 in Race Two before backing it up with 23:38.304 in Race Three, thriving in tight slipstreaming battles.
“A few of us got into a great battle for the whole race,” Divine reflected. “I tried to stay focused on making it to the line and seeing what I can do in the last two races of the season.”
In the 1PMobile National Junior Sportbike class, Cumbermack delivered a composed ride for ROKiT Rookies. Benefiting from overnight set-up changes, he pushed through the 10-lap sprint to take tenth in 16:51.162.
“We made some changes to the bike since the last session, and I was feeling positive,” said Cumbermack. “I was hoping to put it all together and had a stronger session.”

The Ministry of National Security has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the procurement of new patrol and interceptor vessels for the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard (RBRCG).
This procurement forms part of the Government’s continuing effort to upgrade and standardise the Coast Guard fleet, strengthening Bermuda’s ability to protect its maritime domain and border control, and respond effectively to a broad range of maritime security and safety requirements.
The RFP invites qualified marine vessel manufacturers to submit proposals for the design, construction, supply, delivery, testing and commissioning of up to two 33 to 38-foot vessels. Manufacturers are asked to provide both patrol and interceptor variants, with the designs sharing as many interchangeable components as possible to support greater fleet standardisation, maintenance efficiency and future procurement.
It also provides for the potential acquisition of additional vessels in the future.
The new vessels are intended to provide the RBRCG with modern, high-speed, multi-mission platforms capable of supporting:
· Maritime law enforcement and interdiction
· Border protection and maritime security
· Search and rescue operations
· Maritime safety inspections
· Environmental monitoring
· Routine patrol operations
· National security tasks.
The vessels are required to be delivered as fully operational, turnkey maritime platforms with propulsion, navigation, communications, sensor, safety and mission equipment fully installed, integrated and tested.
They will also be required to complete factory, harbour and seaworthiness testing before final acceptance by the coast guard.
A $2.2 million allocation was made in the 2026-27 Budget under the Ministry of National Security for procurement of the vessels.
Major Jeffrey Patterson, the RBRCG Commander, said: “The operating environment around Bermuda requires vessels that are reliable, capable and adaptable. These platforms are specified to support both high-speed interdiction and sustained patrol operations while providing our crews with modern navigation, communications, surveillance and safety systems.
“Standardisation is also a significant part of this programme. Common systems and interchangeable components across the patrol and interceptor variants will help improve training, maintenance, logistics and overall operational readiness.
“The boats will allow the coast guard to expand its operating window, thus increasing its availability to mariners in distress, as well as increasing our capacity to support border protection.”
This announcement marks the commencement on Friday of a competitive procurement process. Proposals will be assessed against mandatory submission and technical requirements, rated criteria and pricing before the Government enters negotiations with a selected proponent.
Interested proponents should refer to the official Government of Bermuda procurement notice for the full RFP documentation, submission requirements, timetable and any subsequent addenda.
The RFP, available on the procurement notices section of the Government website, is identified as: Request for Proposals No.: RBRCG2026, Patrol/Interceptor Vessel Procurement – RBR Coast Guard.

British services firms reported stronger cost pressures last month as fuel prices surged due to the Middle East conflict and a measure of prices charged by companies hit its highest since May, according to a survey published on Monday.
The headline gauge in the S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index for the services sector came in at 52.1 in September, down from 52.5 in August, its joint-weakest growth since June.
“Surging fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict continued to drive up input cost inflation in September,” said Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence. “This led to the sharpest increase in prices charged by service sector companies since May and therefore signalled a clear reversal of the slowdown seen in the middle of 2026.”
• S&P’s measure of input cost inflation for British services companies increased in September to its highest since June due to wages as well as higher fuel prices
• More than a third of firms reported an increase in their average cost burdens
• A measure of prices charged by companies was the highest since May, potentially adding to worries at the Bank of England about a pickup in inflation
• Employment fell for the 24th month in a row, the longest period of decline since records started in 1997
• Business sentiment for the year ahead edged down from August’s seven-month high due to weak demand and cost pressures
• The composite PMI, which includes the manufacturing industry, eased to 52.0 from 52.5, the lowest since June but still in growth territory above the 50.0 level

Inflation in the bloc jumped more than expected to 3.8% last month from 3.2% in August on soaring energy costs, raising the risk the European Central Bank will lift interest rates to a higher-than-expected level

International News via Reuters:
Euro zone business activity expanded at its fastest pace in nearly 3-1/2 years in September as demand remained strong despite inflation worries stemming from the Middle East war, according to a private survey which also showed resurgent price pressures.
Inflation in the bloc jumped more than expected to 3.8% last month from 3.2% in August on soaring energy costs, raising the risk the European Central Bank will lift interest rates to a higher-than-expected level.
But that, alongside a recent surge in bond yields, has so far done little to harm activity. The S&P Global Eurozone Services PMI rose to a 10-month high of 53.0 in September from August’s 51.6, in line with a preliminary estimate.
The composite index, which combines services and manufacturing, increased to 53.1 from 52.0 in August, its highest since April 2023 and capping the bloc’s strongest quarterly performance since the second quarter of 2022.
A reading above 50.0 indicates growth.
“The collective signal from the PMI surveys is one of GDP growing at a 0.4% quarterly rate, with momentum accelerating as we head into the fourth quarter,” said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
“Although the drivers of growth vary between countries, across the euro zone as a whole IT-related services are showing especially solid growth, buoyed by AI investments and supported by professional and commercial services growth.”
Spain was the strongest performer, followed by Ireland, while Germany’s recovery accelerated to one of its strongest rates since early 2022. Italy and France recorded modest growth.
DATA UNDERPIN ECB RATE HIKE BETS
Services firms reported faster growth in new business, a key gauge of demand, with export orders breaking the streak of 39 months of contraction.
Coupled with the strongest rise in factory orders since early 2022, overall new orders grew at their fastest pace in 41 months. Foreign demand was particularly strong, with overseas orders rising at the quickest rate in more than 4-1/2 years.
A slowdown in services hiring offset a modest pickup in factory job creation, leaving overall employment growth weaker. Business confidence, however, remained steady.
The survey also showed inflation pressures intensifying. Both input and output prices rose at their fastest pace in four months.
“A renewed upturn in price pressures signalled by the survey meanwhile hints at euro zone inflation running closer to 4% than the ECB’s 2% target,” added Williamson.
“Combined with the acceleration of growth indicated by the PMI, the data will spur further speculation of more aggressive monetary policy tightening.”
Markets are currently pricing in more than two ECB rate hikes by mid-next year.

Sterling edged up against a strong dollar, buoyed by the British government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and a more constructive approach to the European Union
International News via Reuters:
The euro was on track for a sixth straight daily loss against sterling on Monday, its sharpest decline since mid-July, as concerns about France’s fiscal outlook continued to weigh on the single currency.
Sterling edged up against a strong dollar, buoyed by the British government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and a more constructive approach to the European Union.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who campaigned to stay in the EU in a 2016 referendum on membership, has said the nation should again consider its options, including rejoining the bloc.
The euro slid to a 17-month low against the dollar as concerns about France’s ability to rein in its budget deficit stirred fears of a return of sovereign debt crisis dynamics in the euro zone.
The single currency dropped 0.41% — the biggest decline since July 15 — to 84.60 pence, the lowest level in almost three months.
The pound jumped in mid-July on expectations that Burnham, who became prime minister that month, would pick a fiscally conservative finance minister.
Energy prices, the Middle East conflict and their impact on the economy remained under the spotlight. Brent crude futures fell on Monday as rising Middle East crude exports and a release of oil stocks by the Group of Seven nations boosted supplies.
The pound has risen since early last week, as remarks by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden supported expectations for tighter monetary policy.
Analysts said markets have yet to turn their attention to the October 28 UK budget.
“Chancellor (John) Healey faces a difficult task on October 28 but the situation on the other side of the Channel suggests that sterling is less vulnerable to a selloff versus the euro than it would be otherwise,” Jane Foley, senior forex strategist at Rabobank, said.
Barclays wrote in a research note the pound was among the key beneficiaries from the widening in French spreads last week.
In a separate European development on Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap election in a bid to strengthen his mandate after a fragmented parliament rejected key government housing decrees last week amid widespread protests.

Bermuda international Nia Christopher stole the spotlight with a sensational four-goal display in Iceland, headlining a busy weekend of overseas action for the island’s professional footballers.
Christopher produced an attacking masterclass for FH Hafnarfjordur, spearheading a 5-0 rout of IBV Vestmannaeyjar. Striking in the fifth and seventh minutes to secure a 2-0 half-time cushion, the forward completed her haul with second-half finishes in the 59th and 90th minutes.
In the USL Championship, head coach Khano Smith guided Rhode Island FC to a vital 3-1 away win over Brooklyn FC. Goals from Amos Shapiro-Thompson, Karifa Yao, and Nick Scardina lifted RIFC into fifth in the Eastern Conference, within a point of a home play-off berth with four regular-season games remaining.
Elsewhere, Mia Fishel and Seattle Reign fell 1-0 to North Carolina Courage in the NWSL courtesy of Giana Paul’s strike, while midfielder Leilanni Nesbeth’s Como Women suffered a 2-0 defeat to Inter in Serie A.
In the Women’s FA Cup third qualifying round, Eva Frazzoni’s AFC Sudbury and Barnsley Women—featuring Aaliyah Nolan and Trinae Edwards—both bowed out in 2-1 defeats to Luton Town and Mancunian Unity respectively. Meanwhile, Jasmine Spence helped Newport Pagnell Town cruise to a 5-0 victory against Gainsborough Trinity.
The Bermuda Police Service said that the female pedestrian was unresponsive at the site of the incident in the City of Hamilton
A female pedestrian is currently in hospital after reportedly being struck by a motor car in the City of Hamilton on Sunday evening.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesperson said the incident happened around 7:10 p.m. and emergency responders attended the road traffic collision near the junction of Cedar Avenue and Angle Street.
They said, “it was reported that the female pedestrian was unresponsive.
“She was attended to at the scene by EMTs, before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries which are described as very serious.”
Police added that the male driver of the motorcar was arrested under the suspicion of driving while impaired and for being disqualified from driving all vehicles.
The north side of Cedar Avenue has been closed off to all traffic starting at the junctions of Dundonald Street and St John’s Road while officers forensically inspect the scene.
The spokesperson added, “Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes to get their destinations.”
Caution tape was installed across the area of the zebra crossing at Angle Street and Cedar Avenue this evening while officers were processing the scene of the reported incident.
