Police confirm suspect remains in custody pending a court appearance
A man is in custody after allegedly attempting to break into a private residence.
Police say they are aware of a video circulating on social media that documents the incident. The footage appears to show an occupant preventing the man from entering the home through a window.
A BPS spokesperson said: “We wish to inform the public that the suspect in that matter has been arrested and remains in custody pending a court appearance.”
The visit comes after Greenland, Denmark and the U.S. late last month launched diplomatic talks to resolve the crisis between the parties
International News via Reuters:
Denmark’s King Frederik arrived in Nuuk on Wednesday as he embarked on his second visit to Greenland within a year, underscoring unity with the Danish territory in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump’s push to acquire the Arctic island.
The visit comes after Greenland, Denmark and the U.S. late last month launched diplomatic talks to resolve the crisis between the parties, following months of tension within the NATO defence alliance over Trump’s repeated comments.
Denmark’s prime minister said on Friday that she and her Greenlandic counterpart held a constructive meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, but warned that Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland hadn’t changed.
The king wore a black customized puffer jacket with the Danish and Greenlandic flag on the left side of his chest.
KING ALSO VISITING SCHOOL AND MILITARY HQ
He hugged Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the head of the Inatsisartut, the Greenlandic parliament, Kim Kielsen, who received him on the tarmac.
King Frederik will later on Wednesday visit a school and the headquarters of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk, as well as Royal Greenland, the island’s largest company and seafood producer.
The Danish royal family traditionally makes annual visits to Greenland, often appearing in the island’s national dress, which includes a white anorak for men and an elaborate beaded collar in bright colours for women, as well as sealskin boots.
King Frederik has spent extended periods of time in Greenland, including a four-month expedition on the island’s ice sheet.
On Thursday, the king will visit Maniitsoq on the west coast, around 140 km (87 miles) north of Nuuk. On Friday he will visit the Arctic Basic Training programme in the western town of Kangerlussuaq.

Far-right activist Quentin Deranque, 23, died on Saturday after being beaten by hard-left activists outside a conference centre in Lyon where Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament, was speaking
International News via Reuters:
Eleven people including two aides to a French far-left lawmaker were arrested in France overnight and early on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in the killing of a far-right activist last weekend in Lyon, according to the Lyon prosecutor’s office, which has opened a murder investigation.
Among them is at least one aide to Raphael Arnault, a lawmaker from far-left party France Unbowed (LFI), who said on Tuesday that the aide had “stopped all parliamentary work”.
“It is now up to the investigation to determine responsibility,” Arnault said on X.
Another of Arnault’s assistants was also among the detained, French media outlets reported. The prosecutor did not immediately confirm the report and Arnault did not respond to an emailed request for comment.
Far-right activist Quentin Deranque, 23, died on Saturday after being beaten by hard-left activists outside a conference centre in Lyon where Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament, was speaking.
Videos of the confrontation were widely shared on social media. Hassan and other members of the LFI have condemned the killing.
Both the hard left and hard right have been capitalising on frustration with the minority centrist government ahead of local elections next month and a presidential vote next year, set to take place in a highly polarised environment.
Jordan Bardella, party president of the far-right National Rally, has called for Arnault’s resignation.
“The left and the far-left have crossed an unacceptable red line in our democracy: respect for the opinions and physical integrity of their opponents,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
In a separate news conference, the LFI’s national coordinator Manuel Bompard said his party was in no way responsible for Deranque’s death, and that it now felt threatened itself.
Shortly after the announcement of the arrests on Wednesday morning, the Paris headquarters of LFI received a bomb threat and had to be evacuated until the all-clear was given when police secured the scene.

Nathan Trott and his Cardiff City teammates extended their formidable unbeaten league run to 12 matches with a dominant 4-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night. The result cements the Bluebirds’ momentum as they continue to climb the table, driven by a blend of clinical finishing and defensive resilience.
The visitors started brightly under the lights, creating several early chances to test the Cardiff backline. Callum Maycock seemed destined to score after latching onto a loose ball, but a goal-saving sliding block from Alex Robertson kept the Dons at bay. Alistair Smith followed up with a powerful effort from distance, but Trott was well-positioned to make a comfortable catch, recording another steady performance in a season already marked by 11 shutouts.
Cardiff steadily seized control, and their pressure told in the 22nd minute with a goal straight from the training ground. Alex Robertson’s clever corner was pulled back to Joel Colwill, whose crisp first-time strike flew into the net to give the hosts the lead.
The Bluebirds emerged for the second half with similar intent and quickly doubled their advantage. Ollie Tanner turned provider, picking out an unmarked Perry Ng, who headed home with ease. The relentless pace continued just minutes later as Ng returned the favor, finding Tanner on the half-turn; he struck first-time to beat the keeper at the near post and effectively end the contest.
With three minutes of normal time remaining, Cardiff added a fourth to put the result beyond any doubt. Substitute Callum Robinson threaded a pass to Omari Kellyman, who drove into the area and curled a composed finish into the far corner. The victory follows a string of impressive results, including a recent 3-1 win over Luton Town and a 3-0 shutout against Rotherham.
Lagarde’s term leading Europe’s most important financial institution is due to end in October 2027
International News via Reuters:
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde plans to leave her job early, ahead of next year’s French presidential election, to give outgoing French leader Emmanuel Macron a say in picking her successor, the Financial Times said on Wednesday.
Lagarde’s term leading Europe’s most important financial institution is due to end in October 2027, but a victory by the far-right party National Rally (RN) in the spring 2027 French vote could complicate selection of the next ECB chief.
RN president Jordan Bardella on Tuesday accused Macron of attempting to stage a “democratic power grab” that would let him maintain influence even after leaving office.
France is the second-biggest European Union economy and no ECB president has been picked without a sign-off from Paris.
Concerns about central bank independence have risen with U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, demanding sharp interest rate cuts.
Citing a person familiar with the matter, the FT reported Lagarde had not decided the exact timing of her departure but was keen that Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz be the key European leaders choosing who succeeds her. Macron cannot run for a third presidential term.
A German government spokesperson said Berlin would “always propose a suitable candidate” to head the ECB, who would support Germany’s “ideas of stability” – a reference to its preference for strict inflation targeting and sound public finances.
ECB SAYS LAGARDE HAS NOT MADE A DECISION
“President Lagarde is totally focused on her mission and has not taken any decision regarding the end of her term,” an ECB spokesperson said.
That is a departure from earlier guidance. Last year, when the FT suggested she may leave early, the ECB said Lagarde was “determined to complete her term”.
Market reaction to Lagarde’s possible departure was muted on Wednesday as potential successors are not expected to transform policy.
THREE BIG ECB JOBS COULD BE IN PLAY
“The ECB takes monetary policy decisions by building consensus, and whoever replaces Lagarde is unlikely to radically shift or change the way the ECB works, in particular should her replacement be one of those being touted in the media,” Nomura economist Andrzej Szczepaniak said.
Lagarde’s early departure could strengthen the case for EU leaders to make ECB Executive Board appointments as a package when the terms of chief economist Philip Lane and market operations chief Isabel Schnabel expire next year.
ECB presidential appointments are subject to political horse-trading, so filling the three jobs together might make sense, especially as the bloc’s biggest economies – France, Italy and Germany – have de facto permanent seats on the board.
Candidates often mentioned for the top job include former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot, Bank for International Settlements General Manager Pablo Hernandez de Cos and German Bundesbank president Joachim Nagel.
Schnabel has expressed interest in the role but EU law may prevent her candidacy: board members serve non-renewable terms.
“All the likely candidates are mainstream central bankers and, even if the eventual successor is not one of the current supposed front-runners, he or she would be sure to be from a similar background,” Andrew Kenningham at Capital Economics said.
BANK OF FRANCE GOVERNOR ALSO QUIT EARLY
The FT report comes a week after Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau said he would step down early, which will allow Macron to name his replacement.
The RN said that move was aimed at putting in place allies against the eurosceptic party, in case there was a change of power in France.
Villeroy says his choice to step down is a personal one.
Polls show either RN leader Marine Le Pen or her protege Bardella could succeed Macron, although the nationalist, anti-immigrant party has made little headway with France’s economic establishment, which frets over its shifting positions.
While leaders from the 21 euro zone countries could in theory pick a candidate France disagrees with to head the ECB, practice suggests a candidate needs German and French support to clinch the role.
Some analysts questioned whether attempting to bypass the far right – or far left – could have unintended effects.
“The road to hell is paved with good intentions and (Lagarde) has very honourable intentions,” Pictet Wealth Management’s head of macroeconomic research Frederik Ducrozet said. “But this would send the signal that European elites are trying to control the institution and it could prove counterproductive for everything else that the EU is trying to achieve.”In Britain, outside the European Union, the populist Reform UK party, which is leading in opinion polls, said on Wednesday it would make changes to the way the Bank of England operates, but stressed it would respect its independence.
ECB IN A ‘GOOD PLACE’
Lagarde would leave the ECB at a relatively tranquil time.
Inflation is at target, interest rates are in a neutral setting, and euro zone economic growth is at potential – a rare combination that some have called a central banker’s nirvana.
Markets currently expect the ECB to keep rates on hold all year, although exceptional uncertainty in the global environment could quickly change the outlook.

Russia has targeted power stations, electricity transmission lines and gas facilities as part of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022
International News via Reuters:
Canada will step up support to Ukraine’s energy sector, working with industry to supply oil and gas equipment on favourable terms and boost renewable energy investments, the two governments said on Wednesday.
Russia has targeted power stations, electricity transmission lines and gas facilities as part of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Russian strikes this week on Ukrainian power infrastructure killed three people and left tens of thousands without power and heat.
On Wednesday, Ukraine and Canada agreed on a strategic energy partnership at a meeting in Paris, where Canada’s government said it would work with industry to transfer oil and gas sector equipment to Ukraine on concessional terms, and promote investments in Ukraine’s energy security.
Canada will also alert domestic industries to opportunities to invest in Ukrainian renewable energy projects and reconstruction of hydropower plants, according to the published agreement.
“This is not simply reconstruction. It is modernization under pressure,” Canadian energy minister Tim Hodgson told reporters.
RISK ASSESSMENTS TO COUNTER HYBRID THREATS
The two sides will carry out risk assessments and exercises to counter hybrid threats to energy infrastructure, and strengthen commercial relations on nuclear fuel supply.
The deal, which includes sharing technical advice on developing infrastructure for non-Russian gas supplies to Ukraine, is not legally binding and planned investments would need to be followed up with companies.
Ukraine is emerging from its coldest winter since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Russia’s air strikes have caused days-long outages of electricity, water and heating as temperatures have sunk as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, while households and businesses that still have power face soaring energy bills.
Ukraine’s central bank last month revised down its growth forecasts for this year to 1.8% from 2% because of the energy crisis. Its energy minister said last week that power demand was about a third larger than supply capacity.

Concacaf has officially announced the key details for the 2026 Concacaf Under-20 Qualifiers, the critical first step for teams aiming for the summer’s Under-20 Championship. With the tournament just a week away, Bermuda’s young Gombey Warriors are preparing to face a gauntlet of regional rivals from February 23rd to March 4th, 2026.
The qualifying competition features member associations ranked between 7 and 41, with round-robin play distributed across three host nations: Costa Rica, Curaçao, and Nicaragua. Only the six group winners will advance to the final 12-team Championship this July, where they will join pre-qualified heavyweights such as the United States, Mexico, and Panama.
Bermuda has been drawn into Group E, a challenging pool based entirely at the Complejo Deportivo FCRF-Plycem in San Rafael de Alajuela, Costa Rica. The group includes Caribbean powerhouses and a formidable host in Costa Rica, who enter the tournament as the distinct favorites.
Bermuda’s Group E Match Schedule:
February 24: Bermuda vs. Trinidad and Tobago (4 pm)
February 28: Bermuda vs. Sint Maarten (1 pm)
March 2: Bermuda vs. Costa Rica (4 pm)
March 4: Bermuda vs. Barbados (1 pm)
Head Coach Cecoy Robinson expressed strong optimism as the squad finalizes preparations before flying out this Friday. Robinson noted that his players are currently in “good environments,” which should ensure they remain highly competitive against their regional peers.
“It’s never easy but we have a good group… so we should definitely be competitive,” Robinson stated. “We are heading out Friday to complete preparations… players are buzzing and feeling up and ready for the task; now it’s about fine-tuning and performances on the day.”
The stakes could not be higher for these young athletes. The subsequent 12-team Championship in July will serve as the final qualifying route for four slots in the 2027 FIFA Men’s Under-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, as well as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
