The Government of Bermuda issued the following media release.

Sir John: Charles Rangel “helped me enormously”

Former Premier says the late US Congressman opened doors as Bermuda sought tax treaty essential to IB growth

Charles Rangel, Harlem-Born U.S. congressman, passed away at 94 years old this week.

He was the last of the so-called “Gang of Four” or “Lions of Harlem” alongside Basil Paterson, Percy Sutton, Herman “Denny” Farrell and former Mayor David Dinkins – breaking down race and class barriers, and cutting paths for others to follow.

He also had a relationship with Bermuda.

In the 1980s, he helped then-Premier Sir John Swan as he advocated for the tax treaty that underpinned the growth of international business in Bermuda.

Sir John spoke to our Gary Foster Skelton (WATCH above).

The Opposition One Bermuda Alliance, while supportive, said the bill did not go far enough.

Premier David Burt argued that fuel tax cuts across the board have saved the average household $300 per year.

Shadow Finance Minister Dr. Doug De Couto argues for more targeted tax relief during the sitting in the House of Assembly.

Waldron in the Winner’s Circle on Busy Night at Hoosier Park

Harness Racing

Kiwon Waldron had a marathon night of harness racing at Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Indiana, featuring in no fewer than eight races across the card.

Waldron showcased his versatility, competing in both the Pace and Trot classes throughout the evening. His night saw a string of consistent performances, including multiple sixth-place finishes with Six Sticks Of Gum, Rock Party, and Midnite’s Pro, and a fifth-place finish aboard Firing Onall Fours. He also navigated a larger field to finish ninth with Bull Market.

But the perseverance paid off in Race 9, a Trot class event. Waldron expertly guided Wiggy Hill through the pack, making a decisive move in the final stretch to seize victory, crossing the line in a winning time of 1 minute, 57 and three-fifths of a second.

Waldron’s busy night continued immediately after his win, securing a fifth-place finish in the very next race with Great Flick. His final drive of the evening saw him finish seventh in the last race aboard Youda Shark. Despite the demanding schedule, Waldron’s victory was the clear highlight of a long and active night at Hoosier Park.

Tough Start for Bermuda at Team Championship

Sailing

Bermuda’s sailors have faced a challenging opening day at the 2025 Team Racing World Championship Challenge, currently underway on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.

The prestigious event saw the Bermudian team eager to make a strong start against a competitive international fleet. However, the first day of racing proved to be a difficult one on the water.

Bermuda began their campaign with a defeat against Corinthian, followed by another loss against Newport Harbor. Their third race against Newport Harbor YC also ended in a setback. The challenges continued as they faced Kiwi Racing, the Italian Team, and finally the Swedish team in their final race of the day, with all three encounters resulting in further defeats.

At the close of the opening day, the Bermuda team finds themselves with a record of zero wins and six losses. While it was a tough start to the championship, team racing is a demanding event that often sees fortunes change.

The Bermuda sailors will be determined to regroup and analyse their races as the competition continues tomorrow. They will be aiming to find their rhythm and secure those crucial victories that can propel them back into contention in this World Championship. With their known resilience and sailing prowess, a stronger performance on day two will be the target.

International news via Reuters:

William Duplessie, one of the two men charged in New York with kidnapping a man for three weeks in Manhattan’s upscale SoHo neighborhood, shocking him with electric wires, and dangling him over a staircase to try to get him to give up his Bitcoin password, appeared in court on Friday.

In court, a prosecutor with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office told Judge Kacie Lallie that Duplessie, 33, has not yet been indicted. His co-defendant, John Woeltz, was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday and is due to be arraigned on June 11, prosecutors said.

Duplessie, wearing beige prison garb, was led handcuffed out of the courtroom after the brief hearing ended. Both he and Woeltz, who was arrested on May 23, had been ordered jailed earlier this week.

Duplessie was arrested on Tuesday. His lawyer, Sam Talkin, declined to comment after Friday’s hearing.

Local media have called Woeltz a cryptocurrency investor and described the alleged victim as an Italian man. Both Woeltz and the alleged victim had ties to a crypto hedge fund in New York, the New York Times reported, citing an internal police report described by a law enforcement official.

When the man refused to share his password, Woeltz and Duplessie allegedly began a series of brutal beatings over three weeks in a luxury townhouse until the man managed to escape. They tied his wrists, hit him on the head with a gun, and threatened to kill his family, according to the complaints against the two men.

Woeltz has been indicted by a grand jury and is due to be arraigned on June 11, prosecutors said on Thursday. Neither Woeltz nor Duplessie has entered pleas.
