Interview: Front Street sewage works underway

Corporation of Hamilton Engineer Patrick Cooper provides a progress update

Bermuda Broadcasting Company, 2025

A 25-year old pump-station is getting an overhaul. The Corporation of Hamilton project, more than 2 years in the making, sees critical pipework replaced. Corrosion and degradation of key components could negatively impact the integrity of the sewage system, meaning all pipes downstream of the pumps will be taken out of service.

In the interim, a bypass system will be created around the plant. A section of the Number 8 carpark will be inaccessible to the general public during this time, including nearby cycle parking. The full interview, including upcoming City infrastructure projects, in the video interview (above).

New travel requirements coming for Europe

European Union is planning this year to introducing a digital border management system

Bermuda Government’s London Office has advised about new travel requirements for Bermudian UK passport holders, or non-EU nationals.

The introduction date of the new entry requirements has not been confirmed, but the European Union is planning this year to introducing a digital border management system, called the Entry/Exit system – or EES.

It will require British nationals travelling to the Schengen Srea to register their biometric information, such as such as fingerprints and a photograph.

The Schengen Area encompasses 29 European countries that do not have border controls at their mutual borders, and includes France, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland.

This biometric registration will replace the current practice of manually stamping passports upon entry to the EU.

Additionally, the EU is due to introduce a separate system, called the European Travel Information
and Authorization System, or ETIAS.

ETIAS will be an entry requirement for European countries, costing 7-euros for a three-year pass linked to your passport.

For more information on the EES or ETIAS systems, visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en.

Bermudian workforce too small to fill jobs being created

Economy Minister lauds increased job opportunities, says many jobs will be filled by guest workers

There are not enough able-bodied Bermudians to fill the jobs being created in Bermuda.

So says Labour & Economy Minister Jason Hayward, who lauds increased job opportunities, but says we must accept that a lot of those jobs will be filled by guest workers.

Speaking to Gary Foster Skelton prior to the election announcement, Minister Hayward also said unemployment is low, and more Bermudians are taking secondary jobs.

Christmas Tree collection schedule announced

The Ministry of Public Works will begin collecting used Christmas trees for composting starting Saturday, January 18th in the western parishes.

If you still have your Christmas tree, residents are being encouraged to place their old trees for collection curbside next Saturday in the Western parishes and the following Saturday, January 25th in the Eastern parishes.
A ministry of public works spokesperson advised the trees will be collected for composting and therefore, should remain free of all decorations including tinsel, nails or other items that could damage composting equipment.

All tree bags should be removed prior to collection, they added.

Exclusive: OBA Leader Jarion Richardson on upcoming election

Tackles the cost of living, swaying constituents, and overcoming a 30-6 majority

“The timing of the election is actually quite revealing, because it’s just before the budget–and that is not coincidental, especially given that much of the promises that the Premier had made towards the end of last year. And then the budget process, that takes months and months and months. (Premier David Burt) got somewhere into that process and then decided to call the election.”

Jarion Richardson, leader of the opposition One Bermuda Alliance, believes that the Progressive Labour Party had a number of motives for calling the election when they did. However, Mr. Richardson says that he, and the OBA, welcome the announcement. In addition to rolling out a total of 36 candidates by the end of January, Mr. Richardson believes that his party can turn the tide on the PLP’s 30-6 majority. All that and more, above.

New independent candidate: Suzie Arruda

Ms. Arruda is running in Constituency 19 Pembroke West

PLP: OBA is out of touch

Ruling party says opposition is only for the elite and privileged

PLP Logo

The Progressive Labour Party hitting back at the opposition One Bermuda Alliance after the latter’s call for accountability. Read the PLP’s statement, below:

Jarion Richardson’s statement reinforces the clear choice that Bermudians will face on
October 18th.
Our people will choose between:
a PLP that fought for our seniors and an OBA that ignored their struggles told them that
money doesn’t grow on trees
A PLP that fought to keep health insurance premiums down and an OBA that fought
against easing the healthcare burdens of our people.
A PLP that fought against Pathways to Status and an OBA that still wants to open the
immigration floodgates
Today, we talked about how the financial struggles of our people inspired us to slash taxes
so that 86% of Bermudians would get some relief from the cost of living. All while making
taxes fairer by shifting the burden to the wealthy and away from those struggling the most.
Today, we talked about how we introduced the minimum wage so all workers can earn a
fair wage.
We talked about how we expanded the Child DayCare Allowance to allow over 100 more
parents to get access to quality care for their children
We talked about how we reduced energy taxes 60% which held the line on electricity
costs.
We talked about how the PLP eliminated customs duties on essential goods to ease the
inflation squeeze.
We talked about how the PLP invested record amounts in affordable housing, completing
71 units.
And, we talked about how our mortgage guarantee programme helped nearly 40 first time
Bermudian homebuyers.
Jarion, and the OBA chose to ignore our message because at their core they are fighting
for the elite, the privileged and the wealthy while we are fighting for a fairer Bermuda for all
of us.

OBA responds to election call

The statement coming via press release following PLP announcement

From an OBA Spokesperson:

The One Bermuda Alliance is excited that the Premier will finally be held accountable for presiding over the disaster that is today’s Bermuda.

The people of Bermuda are tired of the island’s inequity and their voices finally have the opportunity to be heard.

I listened with intent and pondered, for a Premier who is so confident about what his government has done for Bermuda and her people, why did he spend so much time focusing on the One Bermuda Alliance?

Why is the Premier lying about the OBA voting against affordable housing and freezing health premiums? It simply isn’t true and he is manipulating the public.

It looks as if we are more of a threat than Premier Burt and the Progressive Labour Party wants to let on.

Is he running away from having to draft a budget to actually deal with Bermuda’s problems? Is he running away from figuring out the details in the corporate income tax he rushed into?

To the youth of Bermuda, Premier Burt is yet again sending a resounding message: your voices are not needed or valued. Very little was said about your future in the Throne Speech, and by calling a February election he is stripping you of an opportunity to vote if you are in school overseas.

That doesn’t sound like a fairer Bermuda to us.

The One Bermuda Alliance has been and continues to work hard for the people of this island as we are committed to securing Bermuda’s future. A Bermuda where every resident will benefit, not just a selected few.
