Bermuda’s footballers shine in Europe and UK leagues

Bermuda’s overseas players had a successful day across England and Spain

Bermuda’s overseas players had a successful day across England and Spain, highlighted by a massive goal haul for Aaliyah Nolan’s Bradford City and a victory that propelled Brighton Morrison’s Benamocarra FC to the top of their Spanish division.

In the North East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division, forward Aaliyah Nolan was in devastating form, helping her Bradford City Women’s teammates secure a crushing 8-2 victory over Brunsmeer Athletic Women & Girls FC at the Horsfall Community Stadium.

Nolan, who has been consistently scoring this season, contributed twice to the huge scoreline. Bradford City are currently top of the table in the North East Regional Premier League.

Defender Brighton Morrison was part of a crucial win for his Benamocarra FC teammates in Spain. Playing at full-back, Morrison helped his side defeat CD Algaidas 4-2 at the Campo Municipal Stadium.

The win was significant as it moved Benamocarra FC to the top of the Spanish 9th Division standings.

In the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Division One South, Jasmine Spence and her Newport Pagnell Town Women’s teammates secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Bradwell at the New Bradwell Recreation Ground.

Newport Pagnell Town Women have demonstrated strong form this season and are currently third or fourth in the East Midlands Regional Division One South standings.

‘Gov’t continues to listen to community concerns about violence’

National Security Minister Michael Weeks says his door is always open to those who are genuinely committed to reducing violence

Statement from Michael Weeks, Minister of National Security:

On Tuesday, I met with Mr Gladwyn Simmons and members of The Emperial Group for a productive and open discussion. We spoke clearly, shared concerns, and explored real opportunities to continue strengthening our collective response to violence in Bermuda. I appreciated their honesty and their willingness to work together with the Ministry of National Security and other agencies.

For that reason, I must address recent public commentary that suggests the Government is not listening, not engaging, or not meeting with community partners. That narrative does not reflect the reality. Engagement has been continuous, genuine, and ongoing. The meeting held this week is only one example of the partnerships that are already in motion.

I understand the frustration that many in our community feel. People want to see change, and they want to see it quickly. I share that urgency. But frustration should not replace facts, nor should it erase the work already being done by community groups, agencies, and individuals who are committed to being part of the solution.

The three town hall meetings recently held with residents were not just symbolic exercises. They were intentional conversations designed to ensure that members of the public could speak frankly and openly challenge directly, and offer a contribution. These sessions are part of a wider framework of collaboration that will continue.

Here are the facts:

  • We have been meeting with and listening to sporting clubs, youth organizations and the wider community.
  • We have been collaborating with numerous agencies.
  • And we will continue to work with any person or organisation willing to contribute constructively.

This is not the time for divided narratives or incomplete accounts of what is taking place. This is the moment for clarity, partnership, and collective effort. My door has been open from the beginning, and it remains open. The work is active, the partnerships are real, and Bermuda is strongest when we work together towards a common goal. In this case, safety and security in our country is the priority.

Anyone who is genuinely committed to reducing violence in our community is welcome to walk through my door.

PrivCom Press Release:

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda (PrivCom) has donated a copy of the children’s privacy storybook Warro Goes on an Adventure to the Florenz Webbe Maxwell Youth Library, strengthening its ongoing commitment to empower young readers to understand and protect their personal information.

Warro Goes on an Adventure, created by the Office of the Data Protection Authority in Guernsey, introduces privacy through a colourful narrative that follows Warro, a curious character, on a journey of learning, decision-making, and personal responsibility. The book helps children recognise what personal information is, why it matters, and how to share it safely.

“Privacy is a fundamental right. If children can learn this right from an early age they will have better ownership over their data. Warro is written in a fun and easy manner for children to understand. The office is pleased to make this donation to the library. This will allow greater access for the community.” – Acting Privacy Commissioner, Angie Farquharson.

The donation aligns with PrivCom’s Children’s Privacy Program, an ongoing outreach initiative designed to provide privacy knowledge for families, educators, and youth. The Bermuda Youth Library welcomed the addition to their collection and expressed support for helping young people navigate an increasingly digital world with confidence and awareness.

“The Florenz Webbe Maxwell Youth Library thanks the Privacy Commissioner for their donation of the book Warro Goes on an Adventure. It is important for children to learn about data privacy at a young age, and the addition of this book to our collection is just one of the ways the library hopes to connect with the Privacy Commissioner to protect the youth of Bermuda.” – Youth Collection Librarian, Kieron Hall.

PrivCom looks forward to continued collaboration with the Youth Library and other community partners to ensure Bermuda’s young people understand that privacy is a fundamental human right: accessible, teachable, and relevant at every age.

Battling financial crime and ‘nefarious activity’

Risk assessment on money laundering and terrorist financing published

The Government of Bermuda, through the National Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NAMLC), today announced the publication of the 2024 National Risk Assessment (NRA) on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. This marks the fourthassessment in Bermuda’s ongoing series, underscoring the jurisdiction’s deepening expertise in identifying, assessing, and understanding Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (ML/TF) risks.

The 2024 NRA builds upon Bermuda’s extensive experience in risk-based regulation and reflects the jurisdiction’s commitment to continually evaluating potential risks arising from new financial products, business practices, delivery mechanisms, and evolving technologies. The findings will inform national AML/ATF policy and action plans, while also providing the private sector with crucial insights to strengthen operational resilience in a dynamic global environment.

“The Government remains firmly focused on protecting Bermuda from financial crime and related nefarious activities,” said Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon David Burt. “The 2024 NRA reflects our collective vigilance and longstanding commitment across both public and private sectors to ensure Bermuda continues combating money laundering and terrorist financing effectively.”

This comprehensive assessment was led by NAMLC, with active cooperation across all competent authorities, including financial regulators, market supervisors, legislative bodies, and prosecutorial services, and supported by private sector stakeholders.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Hon. Kim Wilkerson added: “On behalf of Cabinet, thank you to everyone who invested time and rigour this assessment demanded. The work done exemplifies Bermuda’s high standards and affirms our commitment to confront emerging risks precisely while keeping our jurisdiction anchored in resilience and the rule of law.”

The report reinforces Bermuda’s dedication to maintaining robust AML/ATF systems, supporting both business confidence and jurisdictional resilience.

BermudAir have confirmed that one of their aircraft was temporarily taken out of service following a “minor ground collision”.

The plane, which has since been returned to service, was parked at the terminal in Bermuda on the evening of November 19th.

Another airline’s aircraft was taxiing past on its way to the runway, when a jet blast from the moving aircraft caused a mobile stairs unit to make contact with the fuselage of the BermudAir plane.

A BermudAir spokesperson said there were no injuries to personnel, and the damage to the aircraft was minor.

“The aircraft was inspected and repaired in accordance with manufacturer guidance and has since returned to service”, the spokesperson said.

“BermudAir takes safety and operational integrity seriously. We are working closely with airport authorities and our teams to review procedures and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”
