Fifteen Bermudian runners are preparing to push themselves to the absolute limit as they take on the world’s elite in the Backyard Ultra World Team Championships on October 17th.
The satellite competition will see teams from 74 nations running concurrently on home soil, bound by a deceptively simple yet punishing format: complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour, until only one person remains standing.
While the local contest crowns an individual winner, the global title hinges on aggregate laps completed across the entire 15-runner squad.
Bermuda’s course will be staged at Clearwater Field in Southside, St David’s. It marks the island’s second appearance at the championships after debuting in 2024 with a 50th-place finish, where the squad tallied 220 laps to edge out larger nations including Pakistan, Egypt, and Ecuador.
This year’s team is headlined by national record holder Jason Williams — who logged 42 loops at the 2025 Individual World Championships — alongside two-time local champion Florin Teleman and 24-hour runner Phil Woollins.
The squad will be aiming to eclipse their 2024 total and book their winner a ticket to the Individual World Championships in Tennessee. Defending champions Belgium start as overwhelming favourites after racking up an astonishing 1,147 laps two years ago.
