American Schenk battles winds to capture his first PGA title at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship
Adam Schenk has broken his lengthy PGA Tour duck in dramatic fashion, capturing the Butterfield Bermuda PGA Championship at the challenging Port Royal Golf Course. Battling swirling winds and mounting pressure, the American delivered the performance of his career to secure an emotional first win in his eighth season on Tour.
Coming into the week ranked outside the world’s top 200, Schenk’s victory was a monumental breakthrough. His season had been quiet, featuring only a handful of top-ten finishes, placing him in a precarious position on the FedEx Cup standings. However, the unique, often brutal, seaside test presented by the Port Royal course proved to be the stage for a career-defining week.
Schenk showed immense grit to navigate the famous Bermuda winds, often cited as the biggest obstacle to scoring low. He held his nerve throughout the final round, fending off a tight leaderboard that included several players fighting for their Tour cards. The triumph is not just a career milestone for the 33-year-old, but one of the most unlikely victories of the season, cementing his place on the PGA Tour for the foreseeable future and validating years of grinding effort.

The event will introduce the GAC, explain its mission, and invite the community to engage in open discussion about gender equity in Bermuda on November 24th
Full news statement from the Bermuda Government:
Originally scheduled for October, The Gender Affairs Council (GAC) inaugural public event was postponed due to Hurricane Melissa. The event, titled “Gender (Affairs Council): What is it?”, will now take place on Monday, November 24, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) training room. The event will introduce the GAC, explain its mission, and invite the community to engage in open discussion about gender equity in Bermuda.
Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, previously stated, “The establishment of the Gender Affairs Council marks an important step in our commitment to building a fairer and more inclusive Bermuda. This event is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the Council’s work and, more importantly, to share their own experiences and perspectives. Real progress on gender equity can only happen when the Government and the community work together.”
This gathering will provide the public with the opportunity to dive into meaningful conversations on urgent issues, including gender-based violence, sexual harassment and reproductive rights, mental health, and pay equity. Anyone passionate about advancing gender equity, or eager to play a role in shaping solutions that move Bermuda forward, should be part of this discussion.
The GAC’s mandate is to monitor and address issues affecting women and girls, men and boys, and LGBTQI+, gender-diverse, and non-binary individuals, with a focus on domestic violence, pay disparity, and workplace discrimination. Its work is guided by three pillars: legislation and policy, research and evaluation, and community engagement and education.
The outcomes of these conversations will directly support the GAC’s work by informing data collection, shaping advice to the Government, and strengthening how our community responds to gender-related issues. Members of the public are strongly encouraged to register at https://bit.ly/gacregistration and to share their perspectives through the community survey available at https://forms.gle/KfnuXKz5QKEzUwD78.

Full news statement:
The Government of Bermuda is pleased to announce the appointment of three experts to the Sargasso Sea Commission. Their role is to support the conservation of the Sargasso Sea’s high-seas ecosystem.
The three new Commissioners are: Professor Murray Roberts, a deep-sea ecologist, Elizabeth McLananhan, the former Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Dr Cassander Titley-O’Neal, Director of the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands.
The appointment of these Commissioners expands the number of Sargasso Sea Commissioners from seven to eight.
The Government has championed the conservation of this iconic high seas area under the Hamilton Declaration on Collaboration for the Conservation of the Sargasso Sea for over a decade.
The voluntary declaration brings together representatives from ten signatory governments and a panel of scientific expert Commissioners working in their independent capacities to strengthen the stewardship of the Sargasso Sea.
Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams, JP, MP, stated: “The Sargasso Sea is located in the high seas, but the benefits of protecting this ecosystem extend to our inshore waters and our island.
“The Bermuda Government is proud to strengthen the stewardship of the Sargasso Sea through its support of the Commission’s work plan and role in appointing expert Sargasso Sea Commissioners.”
The Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) was finalised in 2023 and now set to come into force in January 2026 provides new pathways to conservation for the Sargasso Sea.
The BBNJ agreement would allow for internationally legally binding marine protected areas to be established on the high seas for the first time.
Dr David Freestone, Executive Secretary of the Sargasso Sea Commission, commented: “The Sargasso Sea is already being held up as a premier site to pioneer the new conservation regime established by the 2023 UN BBNJ Agreement.
“With a robust science case now complete, we look forward to collaborating with Sargasso Sea stakeholders to create a conservation plan for the area, which could include a proposal for the conservation of the Sargasso Sea to the BBNJ COP.”
Funded by the Global Environment Facility and the French Facility for Global Environment, the Sargasso Sea Commission has recently completed a first draft socio-ecosystem diagnostic analysis (SEDA) for the Sargasso Sea.
This comprehensive scientific document lays out the ecological and economic importance of the Sargasso Sea, as well as the human pressures it faces.
It will form the factual basis for discussion of a strategic action programme (SAP) for the Sargasso Sea, which Sargasso Sea stakeholders will endorse.
