The denial of a US Visa led to the first Special Report from the Office of the Ombudsman Michael DeSilva, now two years into the role.

The report highlights for the public that any Bermudian applying for a US Visa must undergo a lifetime criminal record check.

This was prompted by a complaint that Bermuda Police disclosed a conviction that is under local law, ‘spent’ or ‘expunged’.

However, US immigration laws trump local laws when it come to US Visa Applications.

Ombudsman Michael DeSilva, whose office deals with complaints against public services, spoke to our Gary Foster Skelton.
