Bermuda experienced a day of contrasting fortunes at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, celebrating victory in beach volleyball, producing a standout performance in bowling, and finishing sixth in the men’s rugby sevens tournament.
Natalie Gazzard and Megan Hands led the way on the sand, easing to a convincing 21-10, 21-15 straight-sets victory over Jamaica’s Jillian Johnson and Kristina Miller to continue their campaign in impressive fashion. In the men’s competition, Benjamin Barnett and Connor Somerville were beaten 21-18, 21-14 by Cayman Islands pair Dylan Lynee and Jesario Ebanks.
On the bowling lanes, David Maycock delivered Bermuda’s best performance of the day, finishing fifth in Group Two of the men’s singles with 1,360 pins to remain among the leading contenders. Levinc Samuels placed 20th in Group One, while Dennis Joell, Anthony Hayward and Shannon Lee finished 31st, 32nd and 36th respectively. Lamar Richardson ended 24th in Group Two.
Meanwhile, Bermuda’s men’s rugby sevens side concluded its campaign in sixth place. A dominant 26-12 victory over Guatemala secured a place in the fifth-place play-off, with Kelin Williams scoring twice and Jahniko Francis and Aiden Kendall also crossing the line. However, Barbados edged a closely contested fifth-place match 24-19 despite late tries from Williams and Hadleigh Tucker.
The mixed results ensured another eventful day for Bermuda’s athletes as the CAC Games continue across multiple sports.
