An important trade is being bolstered by an apprenticeship programme.
Millwrights specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial machinery and equipment.
Young Bermudian Tejon Outerbridge is on the Millwright Apprenticeship Programme, and part of his training is at the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy Facility.
He is taking related courses at Bermuda College and the next step will be to travel overseas for two years of theory.
Mr. Outerbridge is the latest addition to a six-strong cohort of apprentices recently announced by the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.
The initiative is designed to train Bermudians for technical and hard-to-fill roles within the Public Service.
The role of a millwright ranges from aligning and calibrating machines to troubleshooting mechanical issues and ensuring the efficient operation of complex systems.
Sean Crockwell, the Tynes Bay Maintenance Engineer who has been overseeing the apprentice programme, said millwrights are crucial to our community, adding, quote: “Their work impacts various public services, including water treatment facilities, power plants, and transportation systems.
“Tynes Bay provides an excellent training ground for developing millwrights due to the breadth of equipment used to run the facility. Tejon is committed and excited to be engaging in on-the-job training that is preparing him for his final designation.”
Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter, said: “Millwrights play a pivotal role in various sectors, including manufacturing, power generation, and especially the public service … we are pleased that we are able to have a young Bermudian engaged in this specialised role which is ultimately part of our succession planning efforts across the service.”
