Important news for swimmers – there will be reduced lifeguard services at Horseshoe Bay Beach for the remainder of the year.

The Department of Parks announced today that lifeguards will only be on duty at Horseshoe Bay Beach at weekends, on the following dates: November 17, 23, 24, and 30.

A press release stated: “The Department of Parks urges the public to exercise extreme caution when swimming at any beach especially where lifeguard services are not available. Swimmers should also consider swimmer ability and the current weather and water conditions before entering the ocean. Swimmers should look out for rip currents, never swim alone, and ensure that children are closely monitored and always within arm’s reach of a supervising adult when in the ocean.”

The dangers have been all-too apparent this year, with three people – two of them tourists – dying in separate incidents after getting into difficulty in the waters off the south shore.

The Government has previously acknowledged difficulties in hiring local lifeguards seasonally and stated that it was considering employing full-time lifeguards.
