Identity and heritage took centre stage during CARICOM membership discussions this week; Alexa Lightbourne says we may not all view the benefits the same way
The Government’s push for full CARICOM membership appears to centre on the strengthening of identity and potential economic opportunities.
At this week’s Town Hall, a panel with Home Affairs Minister Alexa Lightbourne, MP Chris Famous and former Attorney General Phil Perinchief spent much of their time focused on our cultural connections to the islands to our south.
However, there’s at least a two-million-dollar increase in costs if Bermuda becomes a full member of CARICOM.
Mr Perinchief and Minister Lightbourne spoke with Gary Foster Skelton after the meeting, and the Minister appeared to suggest that the fiscal return may come from increased opportunities.
She also indicated that there will be no referendum to decide the matter.
