The Bermuda Road Safety Council has a new Chairperson – Altonio Roberts.

He takes up the helm from Dennis Lister III, who held the position for the past six years.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, Senator Owen Darrell, who thanked Mr Lister for his “dedicated service”.

“Over the past six years, Mr Lister has led the Council with dedication, creativity, and a clear passion for improving road safety in Bermuda,” said Minister Darrell.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Bermuda, I extend heartfelt thanks to Mr Lister for his commitment and many contributions during his time as Chair.

“As we turn the page to a new chapter, I am pleased to welcome Mr Altonio Roberts as the new Chairman of the Bermuda Road Safety Council. Mr Roberts brings with him a strong sense of purpose and a deep commitment to community service. I am confident that under his guidance, the Council will continue to build on its strong foundations and make further strides in keeping our roads safe.”

Mr Roberts, who previously served as a member of the Council, said he is excited to take on the role.

“I did serve on the committee for about a year and I’m excited to continue the work that the Council has done, to add on, and to continue the work of road safety,” he said. “Our roads are very important to us. Every one of us travels on it day to day so I’m excited to continue to bring awareness and education to our people and community.

“My priority is to continue the work that Road Safety has already put forth. We have a strategic plan for the year and my job is not to reinvent the wheel, but just enhance it.”

Outgoing Chair Mr Lister says he remains committed to the Council’s mission and looks forward to supporting its future efforts.

Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the reinstatement of the Junior Road Safety Council as a proud achievement.

“It’s been an honour and a privilege to serve as Chairman of the Bermuda Road Safety Council over these past six years,” said Mr Lister.

“This role has given me the opportunity to work alongside passionate individuals committed to making Bermuda’s roads safer for all and I am proud of what we have achieved together, and grateful for the support and collaboration that has made this journey so impactful.”

He continued, “Throughout my tenure, we have developed and launched a wide range of initiatives to promote road safety awareness, encourage responsible road use and engage with the community on meaningful levels.

“One of the highlights of my tenure has been the successful reintroduction of the Junior Road Safety Council. Ensuring our youth have a voice in shaping road safety policy and culture is vital to creating long-lasting change.”

Mr Lister stated that he is confident the Council will continue to “grow, innovate and lead” under Mr Roberts’ leadership.
