There were 24 people arrested during the Labour Day Holiday weekend as the Bermuda Police Service continued with its repeatedly announced high visibility policing initiative.
Troublingly, four of those were for impaired driving with the highest breathalysed reading being three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Speeding continues to be an issue with more than 30 tickets issued for that offence. Overall, close to 100 tickets were issued for traffic offences, ranging from illegal parking to underage driving and operating unlicensed and uninsured vehicles
Acting Chief Inspector, Anthony Smith, stated: “We’d like to thank the public for making the Labour Day weekend a relatively quiet one with no major incidents reported. However, drink driving and
speeding, two of the three major causes of road traffic collisions, inattention being the third, remain worryingly high. While our officers have a responsibility to reduce road harm through enforcement, road users must also take responsibility for their actions. One person’s inattention or driving while impaired or speeding could result in a life altering injury or loss of life.”
